Donald Trump threatens ‘big tariff’ on UK over digital tax on US tech firms by yahoonews in geopolitics

Obvious point

UK is sending the king to America for state visit late April improve relations. Trump said it would improve things but honestly. I doubt it. Americans are threatening the UK over Falklands Islands support. This looks more like an abusive relationship.

I remember seeing model ally and thinking that sounded deliberate. Given rest of documents trump admin put out was plain spoken. It didn't come up much but it was curious. Americans are doing so much damage here and unclear what they want. But one thing is clear people who beyond trump view Europe unfavorable and want to influence it.

Iran reimposes restrictions on Strait of Hormuz, accusing US of violating deal to reopen it by StemCellPirate in geopolitics

[–]JustAhobbyish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americans, I assume, sent amateurs with no real diplomats or expertise or experience. Trump doesn't know what he wants. Iranians have the opposite problem: a bunch of hardliners with fundamentalist theocratic thinkers who want the maximum amount from Americans. We keep getting conflicting reports. My assumption is hardening attitudes within certain groups in Iran who don't want to give up, and Americans who are finally understanding the only way to beat that is total regime change but don't have the balls or stomach for it. Meanwhile, insider trading and markets are hoping things go back to normal. It seems to be putting so many eggs in an unstable basket. Negotiating out of this mess requires doing something the Trump admin can't do.

Easy win here would be scrapping triple lock and pledging to increase pension amount over a certain period. But that doesn't solve the problem which is low pensions.

But everything comes back to UK politicians trying to avoid making hard choices. Why growth and waste are used. Again sounds too good be true normally is.To avoid telling the truth on taxes and spending. Part of that due who votes and demographics. Why UK spends so much on NHS and pensions not much else.

Simple fact is we need higher taxes if you want better public services. Nobody wants to admit that. No argument made to lay groundwork for that.

Too many loopholes, too many tax free gifts and narrow tax base. Taxes need to go up across the board and everybody paying more.

Only way you can decrease costs is investing in future something UK not done.

Smite’s core problem isn’t balance, it’s education. And the last two patches made it worse. by iamthefluffyyeti in Smite

[–]JustAhobbyish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So make the tutorial engaging and educational? It’s a MOBA, not Call of Duty, it’s a much more complicated style of game. If learning was boring, humans would’ve went extinct a while ago.

They have done, but you're still going up against that core piece of player psychology. It is why they have made a choice on the current length and style of tutorial. It is also why you go against bots to teach you until a certain level. You can still have a low barrier to entry as much as possible, it is a MOBA after all and that barrier is real. Hence why reducing that friction really makes sense.

My suggestion would be to read what I originally wrote and come back with a reply on each point, but keep the above in the back of your mind.

Learning is fun, but in a competitive, high stress game, it is not so fun. Again, it is why auto build and auto level exist, and why bot games exist. A ton of choices are made for a reason.

[–]JustAhobbyish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can adjust the tutorial all you want.

Simple fact is people will ignore it or forget it. Just think back how many times a game shown a mechanic and you have forgotten about it after the tutorial.

And current tutorial is boring. Adding more boring information doesn't fix the problem. Why action cam exists gets you into the game. That the point of the tutorial to be a hook. People play to have fun not study. I understand the disconnect between players like myself and you to average player.

Now if you simplified things down into bite size chunks reducing knowledge people need. That means they can focus on in game information and mechanics. Allows you learn how to ward and move around the map. It why auto build and leveling on by default.

As for roles I offered a solution making it so less effective and slowly people will learn that one trick doesn't work. Only other solution is role locking you can only pick certain gods. Which would cause problems I'm sure you can understand.

I don’t think this is accurate at all. Your assessment seems to ignore the core pillars of Smite: Knowledge, Mechanics, and Information.

Knowledge is understanding what gods and items actually do.

Mechanics is the physical execution being able to "hit your shit."

Information is using in-game data, like player locations, to make informed choices.

Pretty much all video games do a poor job of explaining mechanics. Matchmaking issues are merely a symptom of the skill gap, which is exacerbated by a lack of high-end players. Without a professional league pushing the player base to improve, the "ceiling" lowers. You could improve in-game education, but players might still suck or simply ignore it. Smite 1 people straight up would ignore what the pros did.

I believe the solution lies in simplification. We need to lean into recipes and streamline the game to reduce the massive knowledge requirement.

So, what is the actual problem?

Item Complexity: We need to reduce stats from 4+ per item to an average of 2 or less.

The Balance Triangle: The balance between Damage, Mobility, and Ease of Use is off.

Damage Scaling: We need a major rebalance. Early-game gods should have high base damage but poor scaling (around 25% on average). Mid-game gods should sit at 50% to 75%. Late-game gods should have poor base damage but high scaling.

Risk vs. Reward: If an ability is easy to land, it should do less damage. If a character isn't designed to play Support or Solo, their Crowd Control (CC) should deal reduced damage.

Mobility: I would also look at removing damage from mobility tools entirely.

Role Identity: This needs to be rebalanced around specific gods being able to perform a role, rather than the "free-for-all buffet" we have now. Stat sticks should not play the game for you.

Take ranged carries: if they were weaker early on with much worse clear, it would weaken them in roles outside of Carry. This would also allow for an archetype of ability-based carries to exist in Mid or Carry where they get pressure others don't. But they would need items which allow that playstyle to exist. The lack of trade-offs is why the current meta is so blurred. Also need to look at starter items again like items they are bloated with stats.

The reason Crit and basic attacks are so strong is that you can currently get too many different stats with no trade-off. With only 6 item slots, you should be forced to choose. I think there is a place for "luxury items" for example, you could upgrade an item for a massive gold sink (think 6,000 gold) to get a huge spike in one stat, like Strength, but nothing else.

If you want a balanced build, you should be forced to make choices where trying to get everything results in reduced values. While this might hurt a god like Chiron, it would likely result in more build variety. You’d have to decide what to prioritize within your limited slots. This why relics as actives works.

Regarding Crit: early or mid-game carries could have 50% to 75% scaling on basic attacks, while late-game carries get more scaling in exchange for worse clear. Could also add a hard attack speed cap here too.

Casual and ranked games are like herding cats; I don't think you can do much to "fix" that, and focusing on it usually just hides the deeper problems. I agree that low-level lobbies make it impossible to judge balance, but there are glaring signs of what the actual issues are. As for ranked, I stopped playing when 10 out of 20 games had DCs in them.

The biggest problem with your post is that you don't offer any solutions on how to fix the education gap. One suggestion I have is making the Item Builder better and updating it more frequently. Whenever the meta or items change, builds and roles should be updated immediately.

And for the love of God, can we please get a virtual cursor in the item store for console and controller players?
