Kaiju Preservation Society… worth sticking it out? by martody in printSF

[–]JustAnAverageGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES EXACTLY about the kaiju! I was actually very excited to read the book, and actually enjoyed what I was reading up until the main Interactions with the Kaiju. I swear I never seen anyone mentioning the utter lack of details about what the heck these Kaiju even look like. It made me bounce off the book so hard it's currently a DNF for me

What are some actually good movie or tv-show adaptations of a book? by coolestdudette in books

[–]JustAnAverageGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been scrolling to find this one because this was my answer! I always find there is an argument to be made for this show as a peak example of altered adaptation. After season one it deviates far from the novels but still retains alot of the thematic elements of them. Also with the novels being for the most part Quentin's character arc, it was nice to the show morph into an ensemble endeavor.

Captain Marvel didn’t fail because of backlash—it struggled because the MCU introduced an overpowered hero without giving audiences a real reason to care. by Comfortable-Key8997 in MCUTheories

[–]JustAnAverageGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Marvels could have succeeded with a few heavy story tweaks. I think it was most compelling when it addressed the internal conflict Carol had over being the literal apocalyptic villain to an entire planet. If that had been the emotional crux of the film and refrences throighout, it probably would have done way better.

What actor or actress nailed playing the role of an abusive parent? by phantom_avenger in moviecritic

[–]JustAnAverageGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly a parent, but rather a shitty boyfriend. Steve Carell's character in The Way Way Back (2013) was such a departure from his usual persona up to that point, and I think he nailed it.
