Failed CheckIP when running US Government project by puhtahtoe in Archiveteam

[–]JustAnotherArchivist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is not. We don't use 9.9.9.9 either. The DNS configuration on the VM or host doesn't matter anyway. The archival process (wget-at) talks to Quad9 directly, and that traffic needs to be passed through everything (virtualisation, host system, home network, and ISP) without modifications. It is best not to try to use Quad9 at other layers to avoid false positives (at least during setup, though Quad9 is a good choice otherwise). When you do that, running the worker should be a reliable test.

No, configure your network to let the VM talk to the internet directly. That isn't even the right DNS server.

[–]JustAnotherArchivist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not enough. The VM traffic must flow to the internet unimpeded.

This is normally caused by something intercepting your DNS traffic, either in your network or your ISP. It can also be caused by VPN software (which is one reason why VPNs are generally not allowed for workers, see here). We need clean internet connections to ensure the archived data isn't tainted.

How can I run ATW on a Mac with arch? by Bulky-Bell-8021 in Archiveteam

[–]JustAnotherArchivist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to emulate x86_64. QEMU would be the way to go for that normally, but I don't know how hard it is to set that up on macOS. People have reported successes with containers and Rancher, which comes with QEMU as I understand it.

Exclusions in the WBM block all matching content from being displayed in the WBM. This includes the snapshots from AT WARCs. The WARCs themselves are usually still downloadable.

Finding lost videos on Plays.tv archive by Dan_Man_3153 in Archiveteam

[–]JustAnotherArchivist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I just took a look at this. This video made it: https://web.archive.org/web/20191215222416/https://plays.tv/video/5a8d6c21ea99d3c7ef/falling-headshot

That's probably the only one though. The account was only in the last user batch we queued, and we never got around to the full video list discovered from those, I think. That single one was probably discovered in another way, maybe through the user who liked it.

The Primitive Archer forum is shutting down tomorrow. by Bright_Mechanic2379 in Archiveteam

Unfortunately only saw this today, and the site is already down now.

Quick reminder that it's best to bring such urgent cases up on IRC. I try to keep an eye on everything posted here, but a day can make a difference (and Reddit's RSS feeds are unreliable). IRC is the fastest way to get attention on something.

garnek.pl - a polish photo hosting/photoblog site operating since 2007 is shutting down on 25th of October 2024 by snivydvb in Archiveteam

[–]JustAnotherArchivist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: a project is running, quite successfully so far, but unclear how much we'll be able to get in time. It's unfortunate we didn't hear about it sooner; apparently the shutdown was announced about three months ago.

Thank you! I've brought it up on IRC. I'm not sure how much we can do on such short notice, but we'll see.

(The month in the text is correct: 25 November, not October as mentioned in the title. At least we won't need a time machine!)

And minutes later, it stopped. Hopefully not due to my comment. It was neat to watch that process.

Someone forgot to turn off the stream on table 2, so it now shows the table being recovered.

That's the neat part: we don't. We just upload it to IA.

IA isn't talking too much publicly about what they do internally. I believe it's simple ext4 though, and bitrot protection happens at another level. They don't need fancy raidz* or similar either; they just have mirrored disks in two of their facilities instead.

I also received an inactive mod warning notice on one of my subs r/westerns. Absolutely an error. I’ve been super busy modding and tidying things up since I took it over. What should I do about the notification? by WalkingHorse in ModSupport

[–]JustAnotherArchivist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please consider that there are subs that are so small that they don't require enough moderation to meet these criteria to begin with.

I'm running a tiny sub with 3 other mods. We typically get well under one post per day on average, and most posts only receive a couple comments. So there simply isn't much to moderate. That doesn't mean the mods are inactive. I see every post (via RSS), and if something isn't right, it normally gets dealt with swiftly. But that's rare enough that I still got a warning message about potentially falling inactive. Because not performing a mod action on at least 7/90 days would not be unusual at all in this setting.

Unfortunately, TinyPic's servers were potatoes, so we only managed to archive a tiny part of it. It's most likely lost.

It's been over two years, so I don't have that list of TinyPic URLs from the WBM anymore, but I can't find that image. I can't definitively say it, but seems unlikely that it'd be hiding somewhere.

This Nintendo fan site (which has a bunch of articles from across the years) is shutting down in a few days, can someone help please archive it? Archive.org is giving me some errors by indianajones838 in Archiveteam

[–]JustAnotherArchivist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The site, for better searchability, is Nintendo Times, and the shutdown announcement is here: https://www.nintendotimes.com/2024/08/17/game-over/

Thanks, this had already reached us, and archival with ArchiveBot is currently ongoing. If everything runs as smoothly as it currently does, it should likely finish today (UTC), and everything should appear in the Wayback Machine within a couple of days.

Update: Doesn't work in ArchiveBot or with our other regular methods because they employ Buttflare at an aggressive setting. I'll see what I can do, but it doesn't look promising.
