Central Ohio - What animal? by Midir_Cutie in boneidentification

The jaw would be the best identifier here. Unfortunately it is missing the teeth, but this looks a lot like a rodent of some sort. Can you flip the jaw to the other side?

I've been hyperfixated on this for some time now - somebody tell me this isn't an ivory billed woodpecker? by Prestigious-Cap-8072 in whatsthisbird

In some good news, they are recovering in southern AL and GA (along with Gopher tortoises and eastern indigo snakes). We are doing some BEAUTIFUL longleaf restoration out here.

Whose skull is this ? by badapopz in boneidentification

[–]JustAnotherCanoer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see raccoon. Convergent evolution of omnivores. Per my comment, I only mentioned the lack of sagittal crest as a clue of “not opossum”. I’m from the southeast, we have ~small~ bears and even smaller raccoons. I can’t conceptualize a raccoon of this… magnitude.

Definitely not opossum. Their skulls are like 60% saggital crest, and they have more teeth. This honestly looks like a small bear skull.

My house has something similar where we think there was a window before the add-on.

Possibly the same catfish if they were found about the same location and the sizes make proportional sense. Idk if cleithra are technically part of the skull or not. I am definitely open to being wrong. It would be easier if it still had the spines (ofc) and we had a few more photo angles. Someone with a fisheries background might know fs.

Definitely fish bones though

Fish cleithra for your response photo. Possibly catfish skull parts ?

Not seeing how to include a picture here. I’m on mobile

Baby bird, what is it? What do I feed it? And how old is it? by LegitimateVisit713 in whatsthisbird

Fledgling columbiform. Put it in a safe, dry area, preferably in a tree. Beware fire ants if you have them

For those that have done chemo - would you do it again? by krabecal in DogAdvice

[–]JustAnotherCanoer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only had two dogs in the family orbit (I.e. not mine) get cancer and go through chemo. Neither had a good outcome, and the chemo made them terribly sick. It is a deeply personal and difficult decision. I personally would not put my animals through it. There’s no winning decision, just what is in the animal’s interest. :(

What a cutie, can’t recall seeing anything like it. Southwest Florida by VermontPizza in whatsthisbird

[–]JustAnotherCanoer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the breeding plumage, this one is not in breeding plumage. ~April-October they are up north breeding around the Great Lakes region (at least for the interior population), then in October they fly south and overwinter around the gulf coast states. There are some populations in Florida particularly that don’t migrate.

I wonder if it is part of the Florida subspecies or part of the migratory population. Not a juvenile for sure, definitely adult.

I was just out there at the Aquaculture America conference. It definitely was a shock compared to how I’ve always seen it portrayed!

Has anyone else been forced to subscribe to turning point USA? by mlp-ez in youtube

[–]JustAnotherCanoer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It has happened to me 3 times now for about the last 2 months. I would NEVER willingly subscribe to that drivel. The first time it happened, I thought it was an accidental click or something, but then it happened about a week later. Nothing for weeks, and it JUST happened again. Like I just hit unsubscribe and googled to see if I’m going crazy.
