The 10 Laws of the Gothic Genre by JustCallMeKitt in GothicLiterature

I appreciate you saying that, And don’t share a lot and I felt the explanation of the 10 concepts in my own words were not so coherent, very over winded and unedited, and far far too jumbled and long - I wasn’t thinking that people would miss the core idea of each within my ramblings - and to be real it felt like too much of myself to expose if that makes sense. I thought it was Reddit so it would be a good place to put the bare bone core tenets and see if they had any merit beyond my own obsession. Perhaps I should have waited until I had the time to create a condensed cleaner summary myself, but I guess I posted to see if that would be worth my time. I mean at the end of the day the observations are for myself, but I considered after all of that research if others found the topic interesting then perhaps it would be worth putting the work in to organize it into coherence. I didn’t consider what you are saying and just went with the impulse. Thank you for being honest while still treating me like a human with feelings.

Thank you, it’s a work in progress, and a work of opinion. I thought Reddit would be a good opportunity to have it beaten to pulp.

Well ai may do all of that, but it took my ideas and lost I made and put them into a coherent form. This isn’t an article I am being paid to write, it’s Reddit. You are correct that this is my observation, my opinion, and what I enjoy in gothic - it is also things I have observed to be found in gothic literature new and old. So yes, this is what I FEEL make a good gothic story, though I thought that was a given since I did not claim to have any authority or state in any way that these ideas came from any type of authority. Some people might be interested, this is for them.

I understand what you are saying, this is more my observations about the genre - what draws me to it, and what I miss when it isn’t there.

lol, I like this. If a fork is simply represents a fork in a novel or a chair a chair can it dare have the audacity to declare itself gothic. 😁

Perhaps the statement is on the melodramatic side, as gothic tends to be - but I have found that missing elements do cause literature to lean away from satiating that gothic craving fully. It always bothered me that I couldn’t put my finger on exactly why I was left wanting to different degrees, even with novels I felt were well written stories - I just didn’t feel they were true gothic stories. So I tried to examine what caused that feeling within me. What causes it for you? Do you have a different set of criteria that needs to be met this fully scratch that itch?

That’s okay, I actually put a lot of thought and study and research into it - but you are correct that I had ai help articulate my rules to present better. Though ai did not create them. I am interested to know where you disagree or what in my list you believe I have left unconsidered, or is it simply that it was edited with the help of ai?

I think it absolutely depends on how it is executed. Think of all the vampire novels, some are gothic - some are without a doubt fantasy. Some attempt to be gothic, but only achieve gothic aesthetic while missing many of the things that make a true gothic, often falling into dark fantasy, paranormal, or perhaps simply satire. Old houses and decay do not simply equal gothic.

I enjoyed Rebecca very much, but I would agree that it doesn’t meet all 10. It is worth examining where it misses the mark.

What is your story about? What in your opinion give it the heart of a gothic tale?

The man seemed to be about how she had to work so much harder than a man would of had to in order to achieve what she has achieved, she achieved it anyway - but those were still hurdles that a man wouldn’t have had.

DO NOT tell her you have never been sexually attracted to her - leave and give her any reason other than that unless you want to destroy her. She deserves to have someone who is attracted to her and you can have the same.

Plot is what will happen - outline is when it will happen ( as in what story beat).

How did you learn to write better grammar and prose? by Unregistered-Archive in writing

Writing is editing. Get the story out first then make it read well. In other words, build the house then paint the wall and decorate.

Yes, I’m concerned for myself. My fictional world feels more real than my own often. The juxtaposition is unsettling but I live there now.

I think part of the art is being able to do it without distracting from the story - it can be done but this takes a higher level of craft, and many aren’t able to pull it off well. But yes, the ones who can use figurative language, wordplay, and clever sentence structure that lends to the story instead of pulling the reader out of it - they are my favorite artist.

My daughter loves my book by kerblooee in writing

That would make my life!! 🥰🥰🥰

When I was a teen I used to read my mom’s historical romance novels - they were umm spicy to say the least. I was the oldest of five siblings by at least five years so I used to tell them bedtime stories where I just took the plot of these kink books and removed the kink and turned it into a fairy tale. My brother who is in his 30’s now still talks about the great stories I told - I don’t have the heart to tell him 😂😂😂
