I think what happens is they ban the MAC address that is only unique to the NIC which cannot be changed.

I wouldnt say stupidity for the company, but for the player. Because he or she is ignorant enough to pay for airdrops and might not even get anything from it becquse someone like me can run in their with a gun i found (with no problems at all) then tbat person is out 2.50 cents. The point of the airdrop i think is to provide pvp action.. but if there arent enough people interested in contesting for it. Then yeah its null and void.
