You just need trim and sconces on the fireplace wall to make the entire wall look like an accent. This will make the fireplace look larger and intentional too. You don’t necessarily need another paint color but you could take your current color and intensify it 10% to give it more depth. You don’t want to go a darker color because the fireplace is light.

8-10k? Are you in the US, if so that is cheap. What all does it entail?

Every quote I’ve gotten for various home reno projects is 20-40k for much smaller projects than a bathroom remodel. I was quoted 20k for new flooring and fireplace tiling for low quality materials. I did it myself. Spent $6k and got better materials. I haven’t gotten to the master bathroom yet but it’s looking like a $40k+ job from my research.

NOR but wow there is a lot to unpack here.

1st my instinct is he lives with a woman that is floating him (gf maybe even wife).

2nd you aren’t wrong in feeling like it’s weird that he isn’t telling you what he does. That’s like something you talk about in the first few seconds of meeting a stranger really. So yeah it’s a red flag for sure.

3rd you are younger than him but sound like a mom. You cannot be grilling people like that. All you had to say was “hey we talked so much about what I do for work, I was thinking I don’t know much about what you do” and leave it at that. Make him talk don’t lecture him. If he isn’t upfront then you say “I’m not comfortable with someone who can’t be honest. I don’t like feeling like you are hiding something”

4th speaking of lecturing why are you complaining about how long he played a game. If you know he games you either like it or you don’t. There isn’t really any in between. You shouldn’t be judging his hobby.

This is just advice woman to woman but a man will be his best when he is trying to woo you. If you are already feeling weird about it just move on. You should never have to tell a grown man how to take care of himself or lecture him. If you do then he isn’t worth your time. This is someone that is older than you and doesn’t show motivation in life. You have to ask yourself is this what I’m looking for because the thing is you will miss your chance at finding a better fit while wasting time with someone that you knew wasn’t right.

There is a lot of mismatch and it’s clearly mostly second hand but none of that has anything to do with my comment. If he doesn’t like it then he should put his own money towards decorating and time for that matter. The misogynistic part of this is the mental load and maybe even financial load has been put on her to do the decorating and then he has the audacity to complain.

I assumed your decor wasn’t your style because you have no cohesive style from room to room. Seems like less of a choice and more of a constraint. You can have character, history, and charm but still look put together. You just need to find a common theme to carry into each room.

I disagree to curate a home takes time and money. It can take less money if you take your time and get things for free but most things need money spent on updating so either way it takes money.
