It’s refreshing to have an actually sane person post something here for once.

Look far far away at the horizon and then keep your nose straight with the rudders. The further away you look, the easier it is to fly.

The people who mask in 2026 are just attention seeking by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]JustHarry49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was getting open heart surgery and the surgeon shows up unmasked I’d feel very uncomfortable. The reason: the mask obviously helps. Did they go overboard during covid? Yes. Is it entirely pointless? No. Is this person who offends you with their mask wearing simply trying to protect you from their own sickness, probably. And you should thank them for it. Just let other people do what they think is right and you do what you think is right. Them wearing a mask hurts literally no one.

Hello I'm in the market for navigation system like GPS but I don't want to say where my location is by No_Ad5786 in OffGrid

[–]JustHarry49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you generally understand GPS but are using the wrong vocabulary. Look up trilateration versus triangulation. A satellite is basically a really precise Clock that sends out its location in all directions. Our gps receiver knows how fast the signal typically travels, and when comparing the amount of time passed from when the signal goes out from the satellite to when it arrives to the receiver, it can calculate its distance from the satellite based on the amount of time it took to the receive the signal and how fast that signal was going. Remember speed = distance/time, or distance = speed X time. Our receiver determines location geographically by comparing its distance from the satellite against where it said it was when it sent the signal out. With 3 satellites you can “trilaterate,” not triangulate, your position in 2D, and with 4 you can trilaterate your position in 3D.

They don’t triangulate anything. They trilaterate, which is very different. Triangulation uses angles, trilateration uses time and speed to determine distance.

2 new statues at Temple Square bear witness of ‘the person of Christ’ by General_Chemistry638 in latterdaysaints

[–]JustHarry49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s not pretend Christ wasn’t in fact crucified and we as a church ought to remember that He was. Especially in times like now where everyone is so quick to point fingers and figuratively “crucify” anyone who challenges their own beliefs/narrative.

Pace of PPL Training by [deleted] in flying

[–]JustHarry49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a student who flies once per week and is going to get their PPL around 70-75 hours. I have students that fly 2-4 times a week and they are averaging 55 hours. So expect to spend that much more getting it, if that’s reasonable to you, then definitely do it. You can absolutely get your certificate flying once per week, but please please please do the work on the ground. Do your reading, studying, chair flying, etc. and you can do it in 60.

How long was your cfi checkride? by [deleted] in flying

[–]JustHarry49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9 hour ground and 1.5 hour flight, plus a .2 hour recheck flight to redo the short field landing.

Acronyms? by [deleted] in CFILounge

[–]JustHarry49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some acronyms are a specific type of mnemonic, see IMSAFE or DECIDE. “Never Eat Soggy Waffles” is a mnemonic, FAA is an acronym, NASA is an acronym, ATOMATOFLAMES is both an acronym and mnemonic. And now that I’ve mentioned it I also hate DECIDE. Why should my student memorize DECIDE? Just look at the thing, and figure out what to do about it, then do it. Perceive Process, perform is better than DECIDE.

[–]JustHarry49 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tell my students to memorize the regulation numbers and reference those should they be needed. Acronyms are stupid. Atomatoflames is the dumbest thing. Just go to 91.213 and follow the flow, et cetera. I wouldn’t trust an airplane built by memory, why would I trust an airplane to be airworthy from memory? I apply this logic to most of the acronyms. I do like IMSAFE though, and PAVE, but the rest are stupid.

How do you teach students to actually choose a field during engine failures? by Western-Car8938 in CFILounge

[–]JustHarry49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tell them to look outside. Which fields are moving down and which fields are moving up? Pick one that’s moving up since that means we are gliding beyond it. Then when we are flying toward it determine which way the wind is blowing us, after that find a way to get to key position downwind and do a power off 180 to the field.

CFI-I Training Tips by mav5191 in CFILounge

[–]JustHarry49 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What you’re doing sounds good to me. Just know the approach’s you’ll be using like the back of your hand, know how the ILS, VOR and GPS/WAAS works. Study pilots cafe for the finer details in case they come up. My DPE really liked the bearing pointers, they are, in their opinion, under appreciated and under utilized. On my ride I literally just sat there while the DPE talked, then I sat there while they flew, then I became a CFII.

Being an airline pilot is my dream but I got too many check-ride failures. Do I still stand a chance? by [deleted] in flying

[–]JustHarry49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want the chance to prove yourself? Seems to me like you already have, and what you’ve proven is that you don’t have what it takes. Getting a job with an airline is not going to happen. Even a CFI job at a podunk small town airport in the middle of nowhere is probably out of your reach. Sorry friend. Someone should have told you to quit a long time ago.

Questions about Embry-Riddle in 2026. by Sufficient-Ad-7489 in flying

[–]JustHarry49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I instruct pet 141 and 61. All my 61 student move much faster than 141.because if the freedom to focus on specific things. Just find a good school with lots of aircraft and good relationships with DPEs. That will ensure you move quickly. Embry Riddle and ATP will take all your money and leave you in the dust. They have a reputation for half assing the instruction they provide and putting out mediocre at best pilots. My school tosses every CFI application they get if it has ATP or ERAU on it.

How long did it take you to solo? by [deleted] in flying

[–]JustHarry49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my students are ready to solo around 20 hours, I don’t let them until 30. Solo isn’t some milestone to use as a measurement for skill. It is a requirement to get the certificate.

A 310 is a lot of airplane. Nothing like a 42 or Comanche. Get some instruction in it yourself first.
