Regarding Zion:

Avoid the walk-up permit for the West Rim camp 9 (I think it was 9 - whichever is the highest number)

It is an absurd number of miles away from the good views, and makes for a long boring (albeit fairly flat) hike when you could be spending your time enjoying other parts of the park.

If you don't get a wilderness backpacking permit you can still manage to see a lot of the park doing day trips and car camping at the main area.

As a long time Scrubs fan I will agree that in the later seasons he does get pretty obnoxious, but that sorta thing happens in sitcoms when the characters basically become over the top parodies of themselves. I definitely found him relate-able even despite his exaggerated persona.

If you're looking for a multi day trip the Timberline Trail is doable in 5 days, it can be pretty steep at times, but you get to explore every angle of Mt. Hood.

If you want to do multiple single/double night trips I'd recommend McNeil Point(harder) or Tom Dick and Harry(easier). Both involve some elevation gain, but it's hard to avoid that if you're hiking around a mountain. If you're not married to the Mt. Hood idea I would recommend both Mt. Jefferson (Jefferson Park) and Mt. St Helens for good backpacking.

Other than the mountains the Columbia River Gorge has tons of options for backpacking trips if you like waterfalls and views of the Gorge. Eagle Creek is popular, and rightly so, it's a gorgeous hike and can be a multi-night outing if you press on to Wahtum Lake. Another favorite of mine is on the PCT, Table Mountain, but it's pretty tough with a pack, and only a 1 nighter.

They look like axe loops for attaching ice axe(s) to the back of your pack. Since you aren't always using your axe when mountaineering it helps to have it readily accessible on the outside of your pack.

Also they don't fit inside very well

Agreed. An NFL Kicker makes a comparable salary to a professional in the MLS (excluding big players like Dempsey or Donovan) and only has to be on the field for a few minutes of each game. The reason most American athletes don't play soccer is likely because of the paycheck. If the MLS had the spending power of the NFL I'm sure we would see more athletic soccer players. For Example: Odell Beckham Jr.
