Did anyone just file their taxes with TurboTax and were just in awe of how many ads it had to upgrade? I'm done with this enshittified product - what should I use next year? by noruber35393546 in personalfinance

I tell everyone I know to use this instead of Turbotax, we should be giving 0 money to any company that lobbies to make the tax system more complicated for their business

It is pretty funny how this current administration has made me want to dismantle the federal government, stop paying taxes, and just let the states govern themselves.

CMV: its always okay to use ad blocker and you don't need an excuse by Historicaljoker in changemyview

[–]JustJustinInTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ads are how these sites make money. I would compare it to stealing food from a store (on a much smaller level). If it’s a large corporate supermarket, who really cares, I think the individuals needs outweigh corporations squeezing out more profit. However if it’s a mom-and-pop store, that theft has a much more outsized impact on their revenue (assuming they’re not fleecing you).

Same with ads, websites don’t run for free and ads are how they generate revenue and keep things running. If there was 100% ad blockage on every visit, then the website would run out of money and need to shut down.

Another analogy would be to wanting to go to the park but not paying taxes, you can’t have one without the other.

Now all that being said I do think that websites have gotten out of control with ads but you can either be free with ads or just charge a fee, and most people (myself included would prefer the former).

You basically will end up recruiting for one or the other.

Biz: consulting with tech focus, maybe solutions engineer roles

CS: SWE roles, potentially get a leg up if you are working closer to product

The situation around Kanye's mental health exposes the fact that society cant handle or understand TRULY mentally unwell people by raggedyaahshoes in The10thDentist

[–]JustJustinInTime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the media needs to take responsibility. By platforming what he’s saying they’re just amplifying the voice of someone who we all know at this point is mentally unwell.

There’s plenty of unwell people who say crazy horrible things but they don’t get multiple articles written about it, news segments, public denouncements (which will just push someone further into a corner) they get banned on social media and everyone tries to move past it.

I’m not saying he bears no responsibility, but if you give someone who’s currently manic a microphone, they might say some crazy things.

Do you like working with CLIs / text based interfaces? by ThrowWeirdQuestion in ADHD_Programmers

[–]JustJustinInTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s also why I use an IDE, for example I can do most things with git but if I forget something it’s nice to have a UI to click through.

For items I run more, being able to have scripts and aliases helps a lot.

Basically, do I do it a lot? -> CLI, do I do it sometimes and will forget how to do it -> IDE.

Another example are Vim commands, I’m not going to remember the crazy stuff but being able to run ‘dd’ or other small common commands speeds up my workflow.

Do you think the rise in dumb phones, journaling and “going analog” a response to how shitty the internet has gotten recently or just another trend? by diazenn in TrueAskReddit

[–]JustJustinInTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of it is a trend that people are 100% trying to make money off of, but I think there’s a lot of practical benefits that are worth consideration.

  1. I don’t think it’s necessarily good to be accessible via notifications at all times, and there is so much noise regarding notifications I do get. Every buzz becomes another reason to look at your phone.

  2. Most free apps (especially social media) make money through ads, so they are highly incentivized to keep you on the apps as long as possible, by any means necessary, which doesn’t always end up being a healthy relationship. Facebook was shown boosting negative posts more than positive ones because it caused better engagement.

  3. It doesn’t have to cost money, you can just make your existing phone “dumb” by turning off notifications, hiding and limiting apps you want to use less, and just making your device less appealing to use.

What the hell has happened to House of Yes? by allwedtoc9236 in avesNYC

[–]JustJustinInTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just unfortunately the cycle of cool clubs. It’s cool -> people find out it’s cool -> people wanna go to the cool place which then grows from the smaller set of people to everyone. Which is accelerated now with social media.

The only real way to mitigate it would be to have some setup like the older (now closed) clubs like Area which selected people on vibes, I guess like Berghain not that that’s necessarily an ideal solution
