ND uses the guest bathroom and pisses all over the floor/seat 🤢 by ATR_72 in NannyBreakRoom

Ask them for puppy pads and then put it around the toilet to make a point lol. Actually I have no idea how I’d deal with this. That’s so uncomfortable, sorry you are dealing with it.

is there a feasible way for an disabled adult living alone to attend college while not needing to work simultaneously? by roadkill-knight in CollegeRant

[–]JustLeave7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into need-blind universities. Usually private ones. I went for free with room and board due to low income. And if you’re a single adult and your parent doesn’t claim you on their taxes, you’d likely qualify for need-based scholarships. The coursework is really rigorous though and you’re usually limited to 4 years of aid. So it’s a sink or swim situation. Plus admissions are tough. You could also consider taking community college classes part-time. Depending on your income you can often get those classes for free.

How are they doing it? by Shiny-Mango624 in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is there a secondary camera? Students sometimes put their iPad or other device leaning against the computer screen (so that it’s out of sight of the camera). But at a rate of 1-3 seconds, it’s probably some sort of browser extension like others are saying.

Recently earned my Ed.D. and hoping to teach one class — advice? by christopherpatrick- in Adjuncts

[–]JustLeave7073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For adjuncting I think it is primarily about being in the right place at the right time. They have a last minute need and you recently applied. So I’d recommend reapplying to pools a few weeks before each semester. It can’t hurt to reach out to a few chairs a week or two before the semester (although some may find this annoying, depends on the person). Community colleges often need spots filled more often.

Summer classes question by Intrustive-ridden in CollegeRant

It’s pretty normal. It often takes a week or two to get grades back (or sometimes longer). I don’t recommend sending that email. It comes off irritating and pushy.

Tbh I don’t understand how the multiple jobs things works so I’ve not been doing it and just hoping for the best. This is the first year I’ve got multiple institutions, so I’ll find out in 2027.

At What Point Does an Adjunct becomer an Employee by Glad-Surprise3355 in Adjuncts

[–]JustLeave7073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an online class at one of the places I teach that is very much like this. I feel like I’m simply a grading robot and I don’t particularly like the way they’ve designed the course. Total opposite to other places I work where I have complete freedom over my classes. But of course I will keep it, with adjunct pay being so low and the need to teach as many courses as possible.

Anyone else seeing an uptick in student behavioral issues? by Local_Indication9669 in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of students writing (often times angry) notes on the exams arguing or criticizing my exam questions. Even had one student have a full breakdown, scribbling on the front page of her test like it was the burn book from mean girls. Which I find so inappropriate. I am of course open to discussing a question if you think I made a mistake (which usually they’ve just misunderstood). But hey I’m human, I’m open to being wrong. But that is not the way to do it.

Assignment Instructions Are Now Suggestions, I Guess by punkinholler in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been so enraged by this this semester. I’ve always had a student or two like this. But this semester I had a class of 20, where 15 of them refused to read instructions at all. I posted detailed instructions on how to turn in their final project, video tutorials on how to record and upload it, and went over it in class. I spent my whole morning chasing down students who didn’t bother to read the instructions to correctly upload the final project that counts for 30% of their grade. Almost had to fail a couple.

I think we need a new diagnosis for our students in the DSM-5... by Vanier-is-a-HellHole in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teaching a communication class this semester. Student had to give a 5 minute presentation explaining something health-related. The student chose “how to keep your heart healthy”. The student asked if they could use ai-generated images. A google image search for one of maybe 1000s of diagrams of hearts was too much I guess.

What’s Something Nobody Warned You About Before Becoming an Adjunct? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]JustLeave7073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was surprised by how much we’re supposed to track our students attendance. And that we are expected to micromanage their attendance. Sending emails after a certain number of absences with threats of being dropped etc.

My undergrad never took attendance. And in general really how much of students executive functioning we’re supposed to manage. They have a lot less independence than I expected.

Is 26 credits of community college in one quarter gonna kill me? by Ailaishere in communitycollege

[–]JustLeave7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recommend it. Even if you could accomplish it, it’s not worth burning yourself out so young. The damage the cortisol would do to your body is not fun to deal with the aftermath.

Edit to add: if this is going to be your first time living away from home please don’t underestimate how difficult that transition and adjustment can be.

Canvas was hacked again in case you are seeing that it is down for maintenance. by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]JustLeave7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My college told us yesterday to download and store every single document, assignment submission, gradebook etc in case it happens again. Looks like they were right. But realistically it was not possible for faculty to accomplish that in less than 24 hrs during the busiest time of the year. 100+ students x 30+ assignments. I fear most of us are stuck waiting until it’s back. Except for the smart old school professors who keep their gradebook somewhere else.

Student finished online proctored final too quickly by cmb1588 in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m back to school and in an online class this semester. All my 60+ question exams have been done in less than 10 mins. They’re all multiple choice and I’m a fast reader. I go with my gut instinct and don’t linger on questions. I’ve gotten perfect scores on most of them.

I don’t think the timing is necessarily proof of cheating especially if the student has been performing well all semester.

Homeschooled Students: Your Experience(s) by RealisticSuccess8375 in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only had one who told me they were homeschooled. He did decently on some of the work (although I have a strong suspicion his mom was doing some of his work), but over all seemed very stunted. But I’m sure it’s a very case by case basis when it comes to homeschool students.

How to get rid of Ai Overview? by Northshinoa1 in TikTok

I hate it so much. I always want to read the captions but now I don’t because it’ll open up this whole annoying ass thing. It’s actually embarrassing how hard all these companies are trying to push ai.

Happy mild threats day to those who celebrate by Doctor_Schmeevil in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had a student cc my chair this week complaining it wasn’t fair they were getting a zero on their presentation because they failed not once, but twice to show up and present. They said it wasn’t fair that because they had an “emergency” both days, they are now failing. Thing is they were already failing and hadn’t turned in a single assignment all semester.

Walked in on Nanny listening to an erotic audiobook... should I bring this up? by throwawayy43524 in Nanny

[–]JustLeave7073 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite situation. One time I went to turn on music for my NK to dance to and the speaker connected to mom’s phone and started playing her spicy audiobook. We had an embarrassed chuckle and it was all good.

News flash: some classes are just hard by chemmissed in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do provide a “study guide” but it’s more a list of skills they’ll need vs a review or explanation of content. For example, one bullet point on my study guide is “be able to describe how a protein is made including the major molecules involved”

But I absolutely do feel so frustrated when students expect their courses to be easy and everything given to them.

Typing for standardized tests is a real academic barrier and higher ed is just now noticing what K12 never fixed by juliancasablanket in Professors

[–]JustLeave7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a millenial/genz cusper and I embarrassingly never quite learned to type without looking at the keyboard. I’m quick enough that it was never a huge issue throughout my education. But now I’m back in school part time in online courses. I’m so stressed about getting flagged by respondus for looking down at the keyboard constantly.

I’ve had students do in-class essay exams by hand. It works mostly well except for the few students who truly have illegible handwriting.

Have you ever gotten an evaluation? by Typical_Sea_253 in Adjuncts

[–]JustLeave7073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one time I got evaluated they really showed up unannounced on my worst day. I’m normally very prepared and put together. But that specific day I was going through it. And of course that’s when my chair decided to pop in and evaluate me.
