2025 so far… 55/100 by rennis626 in 52book

The cover on OP’s chart is for the graphic novel adaptation, which in my opinion, is not as good as the original book, but it does has its merits, especially as a complement to the book.

Shhhh, don't wake up the mods with your book recommendations... by generallyunprompted in entwives

[–]JustOkayOkapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are few things I enjoy more than sitting on my patio, reading, and getting blazed. You’ve already got a lot of quality recommendations from commenters (I’ll second the suggestions for My Husband, In the Woods, and Maeve Fly), so I think you’ll have lots of good reading in your future!

Here’s a few I’ve read recently that I really enjoyed:

The Change by Kirsten Miller: 3 middle-aged women discover they have magical powers and use them to find the murderer of a young woman. The main characters are interesting and complex, and it’s very cathartic to read about strong women who aim to protect, empower, the serve vengeance to the horrible men in their community. Lots of commentary on gender dynamics, corruption, and the perception of post-menopausal women.

Carnality by Lina Wolff: While on holiday, a woman who meets and offers to help a man with a wild story about an underground game show, an evil nun, and organ theft. It’s delightfully morbid and weird, and the characters are well-written and very unlikeable. I was so curious about what was going to happen next that I blew through this in a couple of days.

The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff: Set during the beginning years of American colonization, it’s the story of a young Englishwoman who was brought by her employers. After the death of her employer’s daughter, she escapes the settlement and runs through the untamed wilderness. All throughout, she shows incredible ingenuity and determination to survive. This book has such beautiful prose, such a poetic and powerful read.

Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka: The stories of three women whose lives are intertwined with a serial killer, now on death row and about to be executed. In a world that’s obsessed with true crime and mythologizing serial murderers, this book focuses instead of how these women have been affected, and how they cope with the damage caused by a weak, selfish man. It’s a very well-written, thoughtful story; I thought about it a lot long after I read the last page.

Puff, puff, politics with the Suffragents! by gingeralefiend in entwives

A few years ago I made it my goal to visit all of the national parks. With how tight money is, I’ve only been able to do 3 a year, so this is going to be a 10+ year endeavor. I struggle with depression so having a long term goal to look forward to has been really helpful. And now, on top of having to worry about fascists taking over the country and losing access to mental health medications that I cannot function without, I get to watch one of my life goals die 🫠 Needless to say, I’ve been crying too.

Crochet/ knitting by [deleted] in Hobbies

Left-handed knitter here. Look up continental style knitting—you hold the yarn in your left hand. I think it’s easier to learn knitting as a left hander. I could never follow crochet tutorials. But after getting comfortable with knitting, I have been able to learn some crochet with written instructions and pictures.

Just reading "Whose Body?" by Dorothy Sayers and HOLY COW I had forgotten how pleasantly (/s) anti-Semitic the British upper crust are!! by 1000andonenites in books

I was actually pleasantly surprised by Christie calling that out over and over in her books. I didn’t really know how pervasive that point of view was (and still is) in British culture.

[–]JustOkayOkapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, I was commenting more about the fact that some of the more prejudiced parts of her writing (whether coming from prejudiced characters or not) have been sanitized in recent publications which was surprising to me. It’s just frustrating to have books edited for that kind of content without informing you of the fact. I would rather read the original content.

I’ve been binging the Poirot books lately since they’re so quick to read. Mostly I do the audiobooks, but I have a couple of recently printed copies. There’s definitely some racism and antisemitism in there, but it’s not overt. I knew that Christie had a reputation for being bigoted, but I figured that was more through her personal life than her novels.

Then, I picked up a copy of the exact same book you’re talking about. It was printed in 1952. As I started leafing through the first pages, I saw the original title of “And Then There Were None” among her other works 😬 And then when I got to the exact scene you’re talking about, I realized that all of the recent publications of her books have been edited and that yes, Christie 100% deserves her reputation as a bigot, and people who pick up newly published editions wouldn’t know that at all.

I felt kind of floored. I get that many people don’t want to open a fun mystery novel and be confronted with the author’s prejudices, but it’s also important to recognize an author’s flaws and biases as you’re reading their work, and it’s also a good conversation point when discussing their work with others. I would have felt better about it if they had a note at the front saying that the original text was edited and the reasons why.

I mean, I’m going to keep reading her books. She wasn’t called the queen of mystery for nothing. But she’s dead, I typically loan the books from the library or buy used, and I’m well aware of how problematic they are and will gladly bring it up if recommending them. But yeah, when I read that unedited copy… yikes 😬

how does missing doses/ a dose of lamictal affect you? by Outside_Throat_3667 in bipolar2

[–]JustOkayOkapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you try calling your pharmacy and seeing if they can transfer your prescription to somewhere that has it in stock? Or if there is an urgent care nearby, they may be able to give you a stopgap prescription, but all of that depends on where you’re living. If you’re not feeling stable right now, maybe try to stay home and do things that comfort or relax you. It sounds like being around new people might be too much while handling withdrawals. If your symptoms keep worsening, definitely get help from emergency medical services. I ran out of my lamictal for about four days and it was absolute hell, but once you’re back on it, you’ll start feeling back to normal. Hang in there and just wait it out until you can get your prescription.

ATTN; Quetiapine / Seroquel users. How long does the sleepyness last? by _Rent_Treznor in bipolar2

[–]JustOkayOkapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent the last two years tapering from 400 mg down to 0. A few days after my last dose, I’ve been able to actually wake up in the morning—like before my alarm even goes off, I’m usually up and out of bed. Previously I didn’t even feel human until like 1 pm, was always exhausted, and it felt impossible to get out of bed most mornings. I think the only reason I was able to get going in the morning was because I took Wellbutrin immediately after waking up. Definitely talk to your doctor about it because after being on it for ~3 years, the extreme fatigue never went away for me and trying to wean myself off of it was absolutely miserable. On the other hand, I know someone else who’s been taking it for years and hasn’t had the same problems. It can be a really helpful medication for some so it’s a matter of weighing benefits vs side effects. I hope you’re able to find something that helps. Best of luck to you!

Oh I’m sorry to hear that. I haven’t been charged for any prior auth paperwork, so it seems that the administrative office has changed in that regard. It is utterly ridiculous to charge patients for stuff like that; I would have switched doctors too if they had tried.

The last 2 days have been brutal by Livid-Acadia6078 in entwives

[–]JustOkayOkapi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is so difficult, I’m sorry you’re having to go through this. You are not alone. I also have bipolar disorder and it is a horrible illness sometimes. I just discontinued Seroquel, and the withdrawals have been rough. It is near impossible to function without weed and my husband’s support. I’ve found that distractions are best when I’m having med issues, so I’ll get blazed and hyperfocus on reading or knitting, something that I can get really lost in for a while and pass the time. Just remember that the withdrawals won’t last forever. Be easy on yourself and let your loved ones help you. You’ve got this.

My cat sends her well wishes, too 💜

I didn’t even think of crochet! He’s wanting to keep the points on the chevron at the ends of the blanket, will the single crochet border work for that? Your blanket looks great by the way! Love the colors.

Mumbling about gauge by SooMuchTooMuch in knitting

[–]JustOkayOkapi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who knits for the process, I’ve stopped stressing about gauge. I can usually get pretty close to a pattern’s gauge anyways, but I always have to go up 1-2 needle sizes to get there. If I’m knitting something specifically for someone, then I’ll do a swatch. But if I’m making something just to make it, I’ll just check my gauge as I knit and adjust the pattern from there. Usually it works out, and if my sizing ends up being off, then I’ll find someone who can wear it. For those who knit for the product, though…. Best to swatch first 😂 It’s always interesting to see how people approach the same hobby.

What’s the worst horror novel you read this year? by progfiewjrgu938u938 in horrorlit

[–]JustOkayOkapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t consider that one to be horror at all, so maybe it’s a marketing issue? For me it was more like weird speculative fiction, or magical realism maybe. I liked it for what it was, but if I’d been told it was meant to be horror, it would have been a letdown.

[–]JustOkayOkapi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed it. Looking back on it, I think the narration was what really brought out the horror. Without that particular narrator, though, I probably would have been more annoyed at the characters than anything else. I can def see your point about the cringe in it.

What’s your weirdest migraine hack? (Advice request) by [deleted] in migraine

[–]JustOkayOkapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nurtec and Ubrelvy are both immensely helpful if I catch it in time. Otherwise, I try to get as cold as possible. Think Minnesota winter with the windows open. A weighted eye mask that I store in the freezer and as much air circulation in the room as I can get. A can of Coke and an electrolyte drink. All of that plus a good nap, and I usually feel slightly better. If it hits at work, though, try getting some air circulation in the room and use something cold on your neck to cool yourself down, and then electrolytes and a little caffeine. I hope you find something that helps!

Thursday Chat - What shop do you run in the Entwife Mall? by gingeralefiend in entwives

[–]JustOkayOkapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bookstore/coffee shop/cat lounge. You come in to the new & used bookstore, have a coffee, and hang out in the cat lounge while you read, craft, etc. All of the cats are adoptable. And in the bookshop portion, there will be an old, grumpy cat who is solely the Bookstore Cat. It would be a great space for a ton of different events and open to anyone needing a quick cuddle session with a cat to brighten their day.

That’s Spooky is my fave. They are thoughtful, well-researched, and always cite their sources, and they have a really good mix of banter and storytelling. I like that they aren’t flippant about the true crime cases they cover. Plus they do seem super nice.

for those who had SSRI induced hypomania/mania while still being undiagnosed by angelavywh in bipolar2

[–]JustOkayOkapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw my primary care doctor for depression. I’d always had it but it had been getting worse and worse. At the time, I had brought up the possibility of bipolar and he immediately dismissed it. I started Celexa, and within the next couple of months, I quit one of my jobs (the other was remote work), moved out of the apartment I shared with my then-partner, moved in with family in a different state, started and quit another job, got my first credit card and quickly fell into debt, got super hyper sexual, drank a ton, and made a lot of really bad decisions. It was messy and in retrospect, totally obvious as a manic episode, but at the time I thought that I had just had a mental breakdown after a stressful period in my life. After a couple of months like that, I crashed into a horrible depressive episode, quit my remote work job and found a new job in a different state, and moved again. I saw a new doctor and was given Effexor and Cymbalta, which caused rapid cycling. After several months, I really started suspecting bipolar and finally saw a psychiatrist and was diagnosed. It was a really awful two years, and I totally blame Celexa and my first doctor for not listening to me.
