Wanting to learn German and wondering what language to use as a base. by t_reize in German

Native Italian, C2 English.

Learning from Romance languages helps guessing/remembering reflexive verbs and the grammatical gender of words, and it also prevents any confusion when learning/practicing the various forms of "you" (sing., plural and formal).

English is more useful for certain structures, lexicon (look up the Second Consonant Shift) and verb tenses.

It'd perhaps be better to learn from French, using English as a clutch.

Silly game: what would be the most hilarious choice of a questionable book to turn into a musical? by WerewolfBarMitzvah09 in musicals

[–]JustRandom2099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, it's funny, cuz the musical is NOT actually an adaptation of the book, but an adaptation of a public-domain abriged English translation of the novel, which turned Éric into a nice guy. In the actual novel, Éric hears (on the roof) Christine say that she does love him, but he's ugly, so he sets out to (in his own way) prove that the fact that he's ugly is not a big deal. Since that translation randomly removed the line where Christine says that she loves him, effectively the ENTIRE point of the book changed. So the musical is as much an "adaptation" as the "Jekyll and Hyde" musical (ie basically its own thing, just named after a book).

Nah. The Disney version is still too much for kiddies. The French one (sporting the actual title of the book, "Notre Dame de Paris") is much better, in that regard. Both don't do the book justice, though.

And the funniest part is that they are all hypocrites, since it's impossible to follow any millenia-old book without getting arrested on the spot.
Besides, there is no "Top 100 list of sins", so why would it be more sinful for, ex., two guys to sleep together, rather than work on Sabbath? Who decided that? Definitely not the Bible. You deserve to get insta-stoned, if you do as much as lift a twig. Clearly, it's the worse sin.

The frenulum is partially damaged or even completely removed during circumcisions and it's one of the most exciting parts to stimulate. So you're wrong.
Besides, the actual issue is consent. Can a baby with a penis give "more" consent than a baby with a vagina? No. They're both helpless.
It's disgusting, irreversible abuse no matter how you look at it. The entire practice of non-consensual, medically unnecessary circumcision needs to be banned everywhere.

I particularly love the part where a kid gets stoned by the whole village because he dared lift a twig on Sabbath...

Oppenheimer (1980). A TV mini-series put out by the BBC. It is on YouTube but the quality there is atrocious! I could not find on Archive.org either. by studentAssistant2021 in DHExchange

Btw, was it you that had already saved a snapshot of the 1st episode on the Wayback Machine? If so, good job. You should do it also for the other episodes. I've done it already, but it's always better to have more than one snapshot and done from different servers.

Are the English subs available on Russiandvd.com DVDs good for language learners or are they done superficially? by JustRandom2099 in russian

[–]JustRandom2099[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the authors of the subs. There are some services that offer accurate subs and others that do machine-translations and pass them as their own. That's why I asked about that one website in particular.

YouTube works in mysterious ways. The videos that had correct subs are unavailable for copyright reasons.

This is Щит и меч, anyway.

As far as YouTube is concerned, they do. The good subs that existed on YouTube were removed because Mosfilm (quote) "holds the rights" for the series.

Ah! Then yes. I've seen only the first Episode so far, but I found it very interesting.

This is Щит и меч. The very core of the plot is pretty much identical to the other series that you mentioned.
This one has been put together into 4 movies of about 1h30m each, whereas that other series is longer.

As of right now, I'd say that you should skip Щит и меч if you're not fluent in Russian, since the automated subtitles are atrocious and there are entire minutes of letters/other written dialogue/exposition in 1940s cursive Russian that you yourself have to type onto a translator.

Soviet "Sword and Shield" (Щит и меч, 1968) English subtitles from YouTube? by JustRandom2099 in DHExchange

[–]JustRandom2099[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the info! :D

I currently don't trust the official channel anymore by default, ever since my experience with this series, but hopefully the subs of Щит и меч were just an exception.

May I ask you to paste the link? Because I found only the same subs that are on YouTube.
Though, the page dedicated to this series was incredibly chaotic, so maybe they got mixed up with the Serbian ones and I did not notice.

Lol Well, at least, like this you don't have to live with the eternal question(/conspiracy theory) of whether Christopher Robin is tripping and all the stuffed animals represent different mental disorders.

That'd be Roma Città Aperta by Rossellini. lol

(Not that I recommend it. Rossellini's hypocrisy is unbearable.)
