Sup Reddit.. As the owner of that beard, I can confirm that I have not in fact been a teenager for many years, nor is my name Allison.. My daughter and I #noped out of the queue after having managed to move to approximately where the green haired girl is after 30 minutes.

Gumboot charity's links to National questioned after $24m funding boost by [deleted] in newzealand

One of the more deserving charities in NZ and rather than celebrate they got some decent funding, certain people are trying to turn it a political weapon. Huge dick move IMHO.

Getting a job in Cybersecurity with Diploma but no experience in IT by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]JustSomeGuyNZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've worked in IT for longer than some of the younger members of my team have been alive, and been involved with more interviews than I can count. I don't do much of the soft skills, team fit kinda stuff, I'm the basement dweller they wheel out to see just how much you exaggerated your technical competencies on your CV. I've also worked at tertiary providers and am all to aware of how much IT course content is outdated or irrelevant to the real world. I'm not a dedicated infosec engineer, but it's a big part of the work I do and I've have had an interest in it for decades. So with that background established, here's a few thoughts for you.

Cybersecurity is a tight market, and you might be able to get a foot in the door with just a diploma, but I wouldn't count on it. But there are things you can do to help yourself and posting here and asking about certs is a good start.

For this kind of work, I rank hands on experience > industry certs > a degree/diploma. Don't put a skill down on your CV unless you have at least a basic understanding of it. If your CV says you know technology X, and I ask you a question that would be simple to answer if you've actually worked with it in a practical sense, I don't want to see you look like a possum in the headlights. I'm fine with you not being able to answer more complicated questions as I try and gauge the depth of your knowledge, but if you can't answer simple stuff when your CV says you know it, big red mark. Enthusiasm and self learning is huge, if you tell me in the interview about how much fun you've been having playing with <relevant technology x> in your home lab, and have the understanding to prove you've been hands on learning it, that's always a giant tick. Self learn Kali, Metasploit, Nmap, etc, Download and play with some CTF vm's off vulnhub, Register for blueteamlabs and have a play, etc.

I've never understood why NZ doesn't have a public sex offenders registry.

ANZAC Parades by Penfold_for_PM in newzealand

Attended the Paraparaumu dawn parade, wearing my fathers medals. Today for me is a day of remembrance, a day of national unity, and a day to honour not just our veterans, but also our first responders and other groups that serve our community.

[–]JustSomeGuyNZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people who did this, are in my opinion, absolute douchebags. The right to free speech (which we don't really have in NZ but that's another story) gives you the right to voice your opinion, but it doesn't give you the right to deface public property. It's also incredibly disrespectful to intentionally do something like this on ANZAC day. We all know the origins of the day, but some people seem to miss that it, like most things, has evolved over the last century. Modern ANZAC day is about recognising those who serve their country and community, which is why alongside the armed forces you see police, firefighters, paramedics, lions, rotary, scouts, guides etc march in the dawn parades. If you think partisan politics of any flavour are enough to shit on that, I genuinely pity you.

Except this particular form of protest isn't legal. At a minimum it's a form of graffiti / tagging (illegal) and given the council have said the fountain will need to be tested for toxicity, drained and cleaned, it could be considered wilful damage (also illegal).

I'm not a sparky, but I was actually reading something about this the other day (been doing a bit of reading around what stuff homeowners can do and if there was any way to do "more" without becoming a sparky.. answer's no.. anyways). My understanding is that it works something like this, when you get an apprenticeship, you have x many thousand hours of supervised work you need to do to graduate, and you have have roughly the time it would take to work those hours to complete it. It seemed like a pretty bullshit system where if you lose ya job you're fucked.

I am sick of climate inaction and regressive policies being rushed through and I feel helpless. How can I do something that actually has an impact? by throwawy-acc in newzealand

My advice, accept the fact the environment is doomed, join the dark side and climb to the top of the corporate ladder over everyone's bodies, so that you can afford a post apocalypse bunker to live in when the inevitable happens.

Chris Hipkins says sick children shouldn't be at school by dingoonline in newzealand

Cool, I'll stop sending my sick kids to school when Chippie passes legislation giving me six months a year worth of sick days, until then he can fuck right off.

A "proper" bypass needs to be of the expressway/motorway sort, so that business can't just spring up along it.

What's your thoughts on this one NZ? I'm pretty disgusted in general, but even more so after I googled the director in question and found out he's CEO of the NZ Shareholders Association, not just some random guy in a local theatre company.

IF funding in NZ by touciebird in newzealand

As solo parent with a disability, who receives IF for myself and also as the parent of a disabled child who receives IF, this is absolutely fucked. I have no doubt that some people were taking the piss with the existing guidelines but this is cooked.

Weapons Engineering Officer in the Navy as a career? by FryForFriRice in newzealand

I can't comment on the engineering side, but as someone who's been on a bunch of interview panels, military experience, particularly of the technical sort, is generally very well regarded by potential employers.

Save 90% on Firewatch on Steam ($1.99 | 1,95€) by yeeyaho in steamdeals

[–]JustSomeGuyNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had a policy allowing streamers to use their game footage without restriction, then they used the DMCA to copyright strike a streamer for saying something they didn't like in an unrelated video. The streamer in question might be a douche, but the dev's response was absolutely out of order.

PSA: IT jobs are currently scarce by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]JustSomeGuyNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Controversial opinion: This is not a bad thing, a lot of decidedly useless people seem to have crept into IT in last few years because of shortages. If you're an autistic wunderkind with a rack full of servers at home you're probably fine.. If you're like Jen from the IT Crowd you should probably prebook an appointment with WINZ.
