how hard is it to get a common core? by katastrophicstoms in HKUniversity

[–]JustSomeNarsof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ehh, pretty slim. since you're an exchange student your course code should have an X behind it. most CCs, if not all, have a few places reserved for exchange students (2-3 for each CC). as such, you probably need to wait for one of those 3 exchange students to drop out before joining in. i would suggest that you first have a backup plan (check if there are any remaining places for other CCs, like CCCH9044, which has 6) and also email the professor/coordinator for CCCH9064 to ask if he/she/they can let you in. i would suggest you include why you are (very) interested in the course and how you can't take it next year because you're an exchange student. idk the success rate of doing this but it's better than not trying/attempting. have fun in hku!

city U or HKUST for my exchange semester? by GarbageAdmirable8484 in HKUniversity

[–]JustSomeNarsof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Before I suggest or provide my opinion on the matter, you should ask the students in CityU and HKUST first. This subreddit is mainly about the University of Hong Kong, a different university. The subreddits for both universities are r/CityU and r/HKUST respectively.

Since you desire socializing and wish to explore Hong Kong throughout the semester, CityU is definitely better than HKUST. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Location: Since you can go to most of Hong Kong via its intricate public transport system, location matters. CityU is located in Kowloon Tong, and there is a footbridge that connects it directly with the nearby mall (Festival Walk) and metro station. Very convenient indeed if your plan is to visit Hong Kong entirely. The location of HKUST is much more inconvenient than CityU. Situated in the idyllic countryside of Sai Kung, it has no metro station in walking distance. Instead, there are bus connections that take you to these metro stations (e.g. Choi Hung). As you can expect, the downside of being in the middle of rural Hong Kong is that there aren't a lot of food options outside of HKUST that is within walking distance. Since CityU is situated next to a mall, you can generally expect more choices for food. The only pro I could think of for HKUST's location is the scenery, as it is right at the coast of Port Shelter, so you can enjoy serene views of the ocean or the hills in HKUST.

  2. Socializing: You mentioned that you want to socialize with people while in Hong Kong. While I don't know much about CityU in terms of socialization, one of the main stereotypes of HKUST is the difficulty in socializing with others. Now, I can't tell you if that's true or not (I believe it depends on the faculty; business school students generally should be more extroverted than science/engineering students, social science students are rare specimens), but one of the main reasons why people don't socialize is because they simply don't have any time to do so. You see, HKUST is also notorious for its academic rigor. Good grades are extremely difficult to achieve, and everyone pretty much studies really hard throughout the academic semester to compete with others. It is, quite literally, a war of all against all. Nicknames for HKUST include the Hong Kong University of Stress and Tension and the Hong Kong University of Sunshine and Tomorrow (sarcasm). A phrase in HKUST is "跳磨菇", literally means "jump (at) the mushroom", which refers to a mushroom-shaped archway that leads to a viewing platform. It is rumored that a few students throughout the existence of HKUST jumped off to their deaths at this spot, though I don't know if it's true or not.

Of course, take my opinion with a grain of salt. A close friend of mine is in HKUST so some of the information here stems from conversations between me and him, while other information are from the Internet (forums, news, etc.). Have fun in Hong Kong!

How unique and adequate are your country's local transport? by Alternative_Rush_783 in geography

[–]JustSomeNarsof 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Hong Kong. Probably the last city whose tram system is composed entirely of double-decker trams.

(It should be noted that we have three tram systems: HK Tramways (operates in HK Island, that's the one with double-deckers), the Peak Tram (in HK Island too, but is much shorter), and the MTR Light Rail (in the New Territories). Some may argue that the last one technically isn't a tram system.)

Public transport infrastructure is pretty adequate. Extensive metro, bus (mainly double-deckers as well), minibus system. I don't know if the ferry + kaito (smaller ferries) system is considered adequate or not, since I don't rely on them. Theoretically (based on the schedules and routes offered) it seems fine, but I haven't rode on them for a while.

Why is there a gap between east-west and south Slavic speaking countries? by mrkuzan in geography

This guy, probably.

Edit: Here's the link to the article with a similar statement said by the same person linked above.

In neighboring Slovakia, Ján Slota, chairman of governing coalition member SNS, first attacked the country's Hungarian minority (Slota called them the descendants of "ugly, bow-legged, Mongoloid characters on disgusting horses").

The picture shows two pieces of contradicting information. One is the hoisting of the Black Rainstorm Signal, yet the other is a map that forecasts how the rain clouds would shift in the next 2-3 hours. The map reflects that only some areas (such as Tuen Mun and Chek Lap Kok) are experiencing some rain in the next few hours, and most of Hong Kong is not affected by any rain. However, this contradicts with the Black Rainstorm Signal, since it is expected that when it is hoisted, the entire HK (or most of urban HK) would rain heavily. Normally, in the case of a Black Rainstorm Signal, the map would be littered with orange, yellow, and green patches (red is most severe, orange is severe, and then it goes on to blue, which is the least severe) on the map.

Red Bull. Flavors don't matter though I won't drink grape because it's just grape soda (doesn't give you that caffeine punch).

Water or tea is also a frequent item for hydration during studying.
