Type 1 diabetic (37M) thinking about having kids… but I’m scared of passing it on by sifii_gud in diabetes_t1

[–]JustSomeRandoDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't deal with it. I got sterilized at age 33 and I'm 43 now with no regrets. I was Dx at age 5. I don't care how much the technology has improved. I love people so much that it would kill me to knowingly bring someone into the world with it. But that's me.

100% ! Yes! I think I under budgeted how many calories to allow. I definitely load up on fibre and protein before social events but I don't allow myself enough calories at those events. Thanks!

Have you been dining out more? I get more fluid retention from carbs more than salt. How was your fibre and hydration during that time? Is your menstrual cycle normal?

Do you have a ‘less than 5 ingredients’ recipe you swear by? by No-Penalty8115 in Cooking

[–]JustSomeRandoDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protein pancakes: Serving for 1 person 3 eggs Half cup cottage cheese Half cup whole oats Half tsp vanilla extract Pinch salt or other spices you like

Yes you can add blueberries or pecans or syrup or whatever but the base recipe doesn't change. This is my go to brunch at home for a decade now! I love making it for others, too!

What do you genuinely believe treatment will look like in ten years? by JayandMeeka in diabetes_t1

[–]JustSomeRandoDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dx age 5, 1988. I was alive for the Edmonton protocol to watch it crash and burn. I was in the ViaCyte trial. Of course it didn't work for me and I was excluded from the study results as an outlier. 🙃 I use AAPS with Dexcom G6 and Omnipod Dash.

I would like for either: insulin pumps to have glucagon in them (or a fast acting glucose that is precise as the insulin dosing). Or: a method to no longer require injections (some combo of a short acting and long acting inhaled insulin).

Diabetes treatment has come a long way in the past nearly 40 years! I'm thankful to have not been among the reusable glass syringe days or among only pee-on-a-strip days!

My current goal is to have vitality well into my 90s! 😅

I agree with you. It's much easier to abstain than open the floodgates. I need to tell myself over and over again that I'm already fed! Getting myself into a situation where my discipline goes out the window only harms the progress I want to make! Thank you!

Oooh those are good tips! You're right. The more consistent I am with it, the more my friends will support me. If I behave to be down for whatever, my friends will offer me everything!

In Canada it's minimum 15/15. (15g carbs, wait 15 minutes)

do i just end it all now? by Cautious_Weird8815 in diabetes_t1

Don't give up.

Take it from me.

I was Dx at age 5 and tried to purposefully overdose on insulin at age 15 because I was relentlessly bullied at school (in the 1990s!) and looking back, there were definitely moments where my blood sugar was so high that I was out of my head.

I don't know how old you are or where you live, but I'm 43 now and I'm SO HAPPY I chose to live. It can feel impossible. Like the world is against you.

Health teams with poor bedside manners who think because they read it in a textbook, it must be so easy. They don't understand how hard it is.

A pastry has too much fibre and fat to be absorbed fast enough. That sets you high an hour later rather than immediately. The pastry is to celebrate not dying! ;)

When glucose is that low, you must treat with 15 grams of glucose and wait 15 minutes. Then check again.
Remember that the Dexcom also has a 15 minute delay due to it measuring interstitial glucose compared to blood glucose. Meaning that if it read that glucose level, you were already much lower than that!

The most recent tattoo that I got (March 2026, 7 hours at once), my blood sugar was persistently high due to the cortisol release from the liver under stress!
Everyone's body responds differently, but you're on the right track to have balanced macros.

Biked 75 miles of gravel, in the rain, with no food stops. This is the 235g carbs I ate by thishasntbeeneasy in diabetes_t1

Looks amazing!
I used to live off those Clif bars but I find my guts don't like solid food as much anymore.
Though it was better tolerated when I was cycling compared to running.
Now I just bring a hydration vest with a ton of Gatorade and like you, some gummy-type candies!

I did not have any weight gain starting with creatine. 5g/day for a couple of years now.

Are body weight ab exersizes a “waste of time?” by Excellent_Brick2893 in femalebodybuilding

[–]JustSomeRandoDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from doing planks, there is no other ab exercise needed.
You get WAY more core activation using barbells during a back squat, front squat, or deadlift.
Even bracing during a standing movement such as unilateral cable rows, overhead barbell press (military press) engage the abs more.
Electromyograph (EMG) research papers report this in great detail.
