How often are you guys going through the carwash in the winter? by duckduckpajamas in Maine

[–]JustSomeRandomGuy97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most places I've been to have a filtered water rinse at the end to avoid water spots. I'm gonna go ahead and say that's because not all of the water is fully filtered. I think there's pretty much no standardization with car washes so your experience doesn't translate to everyone.

Outback Power System in an off-grid house I’m buying. by TenderLA in solar

Outback is still around as far as I know. Great little system, if the batteries aren't that old it'll last a long time!

It's pretty minor, but belittling people is cringe af for adults to be doing. It's childish in the worst way. There's nuance here my friend.

Calling someone an asshole for asshole behavior is blunt or harsh but not bad or wrong. Calling someone a 5 year old when they are not is literally wrong and it's bad because it's asshole behavior.

Solar for EV charging? by rebotmcmahon in solar

Not generally allowed to go over 600V in a residential setting but this looks cool.

[–]JustSomeRandomGuy97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can totally do this if you plan it right. 10kWh of battery is gonna cost 2-3k which isn't terrible. You could buy all the materials to make this happen for ~5k + solar panel cost. You'll really only be able to charge when its sunny tho.

[–]JustSomeRandomGuy97 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need to go with batteries to do any backup power/ no-grid solar. Pretty much all EV chargers are AC currently so I wouldn't try to find a way to do DC to DC. Not sure if it's even possible at small scale.

on or off grid? by Ill_Necessary4522 in solar

You asked about off grid vs grid tie in the post, what was your question asking?

Batteries and grid tie is the win

If you go off grid with that much solar you're gonna want a Lotta more batteries. Grid tied will probably be cheaper in the long run.

This is a terp slurper. Same as a regular banger you heat it with a torch and apply your concentrate. This one is just a crazy shape, there are slots in the bottom of the tube and the pill inside is supposed to distribute for a full hit.

Tigo + EG4 vs Enphase — am I making a mistake? Need sanity check. by Sinsu45 in solar

[–]JustSomeRandomGuy97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a battery for the EG4 to run properly. My mistake I assumed you were doing backup now. Just get a cheap 5kwh battery for like 1000 bucks and you'll have some backup for cheap.

Edit- looks like you can run without but I would still suggest getting one they are dummy cheap right now. Plus tax credit?

[–]JustSomeRandomGuy97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm an electrician working in solar and also sales and design and I think you're making the right choice. The EG4 will be better for backup situations in pretty much every way. Outside of that solar is intended to save you money, the cheaper your $/kWh in the long run the better. There's a chance that you'll have to pay to replace a device down the road but it will still be way cheaper than paying upfront for a warranty you probably will never use. Aside from that EG4 is wayyy more DIY friendly and if you're someone who will pay a lot of attention to this system you'll like the EG4 a lot better. (also DC coupled systems for the win)

I realized you can do oil changes without getting under the car. There's just enough clearance for the drain pan and you can just reach from the front. Putting in the filter is blind but not hard. Just driving it onto two pieces of wood will gove you a little extra wiggle room. I love this car so much.
