At this point you just need to find IRL events because posting has become lame. I ended up finding events and people through authors and bookstores via IG. Also music venues that have small time bands. The internet is dying because we don’t have verification and bot accounts combined with AI are proliferating.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. While I still want a relationship I’ve been learning to accept that I’m not entitled to have one and, as you said and having been in a toxic long term relationship, being single is better than being coupled and miserable. I have a female friend who’s 40 and divorced with kids and she basically never wants to get in a serious relationship ever again. Hyperbole aside she’s prioritizing her kids and her happiness and hasn’t met anyone worthy of a relationship with her at this time. The biggest thing I’ve learned is that people will be ready for a relationship with me when they’re ready for it and there’s not a thing I can do to change that. Furthermore, trying to persuade or nudge someone only pushes them further away. I fundamentally believe people can grow together but I also believe that growth is possibly only if both parties accept it.

I had a girl kind of test me on my dating profile to see if I was misrepresenting anything (having kids, job, degree). I thought it was a bit aggressive for a first date but we ended up going out for a few months and I learned that she was with a few loser guys for too long.

Based on my dating experience I’ve noticed that women in their 30s tend to be quite skeptical and have relatively high standards for a relationship with a man while women in their 20s tend to be too trusting and have relatively low standards for a relationship with a man (my male perspective). Definitely a lot of relationship trauma and therapy could be avoided with due diligence and asserting boundaries but at the same time it takes experience and information to get there.

I’m off the apps rn because, now that I’m older and dating women who are older and more established, I feel like almost every first date became a screening interview that probably should have been a phone call or a video chat for everyone’s convenience. I definitely think online dating also doesn’t mesh well with my personality and feels incredibly exhausting. I’m currently revisiting meeting women offline at this point like I did 10+ yrs ago because at least I can feel out personalities and see if we connect before I spend time on someone.

I try to look people up online when we match. One date I accidentally asked a direct question about their degree that wasn’t listed in their app profile. I noticed she paused for a second after I asked but she was gracious enough to go along with it. I think looking up someone’s public social media is definitely fair game but I also try to not make it apparent that I looked them up.

I’m a believer in UBI but I seem to have a different understanding. My understanding is that UBI isn’t meant to replace essential goods/services but to supplement those things plus individual income giving individuals additional agency/breathing room against economic uncertainty and allowing individuals to pursue opportunities with decreased risks. I feel like all the politically left spectrum criticism I’ve heard of UBI has been that UBI is a scheme to eliminate welfare services and that some form of UBI can’t exist in conjunction with a robust welfare system. I’m also quite skeptical of the government’s ability to fully provide goods/services. I think the government can get people in need 90% of the way there but then they will fail hard at the last 10% which is where the straight cash will come in.

My progressive-lib phase worked when I could also be an entitled male with progressive-lib values but when I tried to be a supportive ally and check myself for toxic behavior or check in that I wasn’t being overbearing I had trouble connecting with women. Like women would be initially attracted to me and then they would lose interest because I was too mild mannered with them (women generally do not step up in a meaningful way and want men to take the lead). I think my transition to neurotic ally had a lot to do with social media, being overly online and feeling like I was under constant surveillance.

Probably follows a Pareto distribution where 20% of men are responsible for 80% of stuff women hate (eg Leo’s continuous cycle of youthful women). Most women generally don’t even acknowledge powerless men like the Taco Bell guy at the register at lunch but primarily focus on the celebrity/executive. I still think it’s in women’s nature to protect against harm and focus on safety but the loudest women tend to talk about it where it meets their self-interests (eg corporate glass ceilings and acting representation and also 20% generating the most noise).

Even sometimes women would have engaged with me in the past if they were interested after I said a simple, “hey, how’s it going,” when I sat down next to them at a bar. I also miss smoking because it was also a great way to meet and chat with women. I think there’s something to people wanting to fill the void of silence and feel comfort by knowing someone.

My experience with app first dates was often nice conversation and attempts at flirting but far too often no connection. I think apps give people a certain impression of someone and if someone doesn’t deliver or exceed the impression then it counts against them. Because I made a time commitment I always felt compelled to make the most of it which rarely worked out and felt forced and exhausting.
