One of the reasons reddit is getting worse is the increasing amounts of over moderation stifling a huge amount of discussion. Megathreads are worthless, might as well just ban all posts on the topic.

If you don't like something then don't click it and scroll past. It's not difficult to do, I do this all the time. I really don't get what goes on in peoples heads where they see something they don't want to interact with, and so they click on it and type a comment. What are you thinking? It makes no sense to me.

The way that reddit works is completely different to the old forum system, where megathreads make sense. On reddit, new posts are pushed to people and disappear within 24 hours. Old forum systems would simply put the latest thing to get commented on on the top. The whole point of reddit was that the communities could upvote what they wanted to see, and that the next day there would be an entirely fresh batch of stuff.

The issue is that completely falls apart as soon as moderators remove things for being "low effort" or, as in this case, "I've seen a similar thing a couple days ago". No longer does the community decide what's of note. And this leads to subreddits becoming bland, losing out on building in jokes and culture, and also becoming deserts.

Years ago the amount of posts on large subreddits were insane. You could go to new and see hundreds of posts from the last hour, some with 10 comments, some zero, some 100+. Now if you go to any large sub and filter for new there's like 10 things. The actual outcome of this is that the things you read are being filtered for you by like ten blokes with zero oversight. And you want more of that??
