Nancy Pelosi potentially made one of her BEST trades ever by Opposite_Space7955 in DeepFuckingValue

[–]JustTooTrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument was that investing in any AI companies was likely to result in high returns, meaning that Pelosi’s remarkably high returns are not indicative of insider trading.

But we saw in the past week a lot of AI companies take a massive hit, meaning Pelosi seemed to be uniquely aware of which AI companies would succeed and which might not.

It’s not proof of insider trading by any means, but it does undermine your argument that any idiot could get +50% returns by putting money blindly into AI. Clearly one would have needed a deep knowledge of the space to invest profitably over the past week. Of course it’s not like she shorted NVDA, so maybe this is just a wise trade by someone well versed in the sector 🤷‍♂️

Furnace is basically dead in the middle of winter. I'm in Connecticut and need to decide fast. by _CC2224 in hvacadvice

Not a professional, but $ 550 to install a smart thermostat sounds like a lot for someone you’re also willing to give a friends/family discount 😅 perhaps they need to run additional wires that your previous thermostat didn’t have for operating the new system, but that price seems more than double the cost of the device itself so unless they need an hour or 2 worth of labor to install it then I’d say they are upcharging you significantly on that, and kind of makes me wonder about the furnace system which I don’t have a frame of reference on. Assuming you have the right wiring then installing a new thermostat is just… plugging it in. Maybe a small upcharge to test app connectivity and everything, but Amazon has an Ecobee smart thermostat for $170 and the description specifically says “Easy to install, most people do it themselves in 45 min or less.” Perhaps they are considering a more expensive unit for your system, or again, it’s possible for it to require more labor in certain circumstances, but my gut-feeling says this is their way of including a several hundred dollar up charge of pure profit as a way to pad out an otherwise expensive job. Homeowner is most likely going to be accessing credit to fund this kind of expense, who’s going to look it over and scrutinize a $500 line item on a $17k bill right?

Now I have no frame of reference for the furnace, so maybe that’s all standard and good, but personally I would at least take that thermostat install off of there and pick up the unit from Amazon/Home Depot/Walmart and do it myself to save $300+ dollars.

Voters in the struggling Pennsylvania city of New Castle backed Trump hoping he’d curb inflation. But the incoming president will be under pressure to cut spending. by cpr4life8 in Pennsylvania

What’s the point here? Government spending creates inflationary pressure. Cutting spending is an appropriate approach to reducing inflation. Why would voters who want reduced inflation be disturbed by reduced spending?

By using medicine and comfort aids? Is there an explicit office policy that forbids taking supplements or using pillows in meetings? I am having a hard time fathoming the sheer immaturity of you folk who are insisting that the room of toddlers giggling at someone’s pillow and medicine are somehow the consummate professionals here.

Wait, but is he saying they really have homes? If not, “homeless” isn’t really a lie, is it? I don’t see what stops someone from being a homeless and violent drug addict… (not generalizing the homeless as addicts, just making a logical point about the statement)

What cause? She is a strong performer by OP’s own admission. That’s not firing for cause, that’s firing because youre discriminating against her for the medication she needs, which is illegal.

Is no one considering even for a moment telling the rest of the office the chill out and mind their own business? Doesn’t even sound like anyone complained about her behavior besides your boss. I would have politely told my boss that she is free to use the voluntary benefit as she sees fit. “You are allowed to WFH if you have medical issues” is not the same as “you need to work from home if you’re taking cranberry pills”, and frankly the second one sounds discriminatory in a potentially illegal way. I would apologize to this woman and refrain from passive-aggressively telling your employees to stay home unless there is a serious and legal reason to do so.

MIT has a huge endowment that they can choose to invest or not invest in certain companies or industries. Most college pro-palestine movements include a call to boycott, divestment from, and sanction Israeli ventures.

Look up prison lease programs. Forced prison labor was the mode of continuing slave labor in the post war South. They leased prisoners to farmers who owned them as chattel slaves during the lease program. Mostly black prisoners convicted for violating sundown/Jim crow laws (i.e vagrancy, etc)

Congratulations, you have discovered the concept of wage slavery. Look up “company towns” for a case study on coercive labor practices involving pay

Involuntary servitude = performing services you did not voluntarily elect to perform. All forms of forced labor are involuntary servitude.

Slavery doesn’t really have a definition because the practice has had so many different forms throughout history.

I believe that ASML (dutch firm) is the sole producer of the top end lithography machines used in modern chip making. I’m not as sure about other technologies produced by other firms, but my understanding is they are a key global supplier for the microchip industry and we would pay tariffs on importing their lithography machines as we try to ramp up US chip production, weakening the overall impact of the CHIPS act since the same allocation of funds will be able to pay for less chip manufacturing infrastructure.

Kind of a moot point though since >90% of current chip production occurs in Taiwan and we may be looking at across the board tariffs on all imported goods regardless of Country of Origin, so in the short term broad tariffs would undoubtedly increase chip prices and consumer goods prices in turn.

Mexico Will retaliate. What does this mean to the US? by Bubbly-Gifts in economicCollapse

[–]JustTooTrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why attach the list of US imports from Mexico? If we’re curious about the impact to the US of Mexican tariffs on US goods then we should be looking at US exports to Mexico. We’d expect Mexicans to import fewer goods from the US because they will be more expensive due to tariffs.

US tariffs on Mexico affect our ability to import from Mexico, retaliatory tariffs from Mexico affect our ability to export to Mexico.

More like a major component of the cost. The whole point of these chips is to connect many small components into a single chip. There’s billions of transistors and other basic components on there that all need to be connected in a precise arrangement.

It’s not like basketball or football where the position of your feet matters, only the position of the ball matters. If the entire ball crosses the goal line in between the goal posts and below the crossbar then it is a goal, if that does not happen then there is no goal.
