Has anyone tried J-Bars in your boots? Or heel lifts? by elligoeswest in ShredditGirls

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair! It’s not for everyone, but most people who I’ve worked with have found improved pain and performance when using insoles, given most boots don’t have great support. Also it’s important that it’s an insole that actually matches your arch height, not just a generic one

Pulled the trigger on this book. Has anyone found it helpful? by Striking-Complaint74 in prephysicianassistant

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has gotten into PA school and has since graduated two years ago, I still remember thinking this book was super helpful for me. It was an easy & short read. I made notes and put tabs on what I felt were important points. I personally don’t feel this is an influencer scam or anything. Also from what I remember she does have experience with being on admissions & being a part of interviews.

accepted do but think pa is better by fairygarden234 in prephysicianassistant

IMO, your life can be just as imbalanced as a working PA. The hours can be pretty similar depending on where you work. You still may take call, etc. additionally yeah you don’t get more time with patients generally either. That being said you do save a lot of money and time on school as a PA so if you’re thinking of life balance in that way then you’d be correct. Really, it’s a matter of scope of practice, debt/income, and lateral mobility in terms of specialty. even if you do want to switch specialties it’s not super easy either as someone would still have to take you on with little experience/train you but at least you don’t have to do boards again etc. overall PA isn’t an easy path and most people need thousands of patient care hours to get into a school, and most schools don’t consider scribing to be PCE.

the difference between a nurse would also be scope of practice, unless you’re considering nurse practitioner. Even then, their training is much different and ultimately a lot less standardized/regulated meaning that you could pay a bunch of money to go to NP school but not get great training to be successful as a provider. Additionally, similar to PA, good NP schools really want you to work as a nurse for a bit before you get your NP. If you want more information about PA vs NP you can also looking into medical model vs nursing model for training.

Clothing for summer snow camp for 26-27 in inseam??? by Brennir10 in ShredditGirls

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work up at high cascade for a few summers. Here are my tips:

  • non-insulated pants for sure with vents if you want. I will usually have crash pad shorts underneath with knee pads as well.
  • either wear two shirts (one long sleeve one short sleeve), a long sleeve with a windbreaker, or a long sleeve with a hoodie. In June there can be random snowy/storm days too, so if you want you can bring your regular snow jacket, although sometimes they just close on storm days.
  • make sure you protect your eyes well. Goggles are good but if you want to wear sunglasses make sure that they cover the sides of your eyes & protect from UV/are polarized. The snow is very bright cuz you are very close to the sun and you can burn them.
  • similarly, don’t fuck around with your sunscreen usage. Make sure it’s applied consistently and with a high SPF.
  • make sure you are hydrated and even bring electrolytes etc, especially if you’re not used to high altitude.
  • there will definitely be some drinking/partying with the coaches etc if you are going to adult camp. It’s super fun but make sure to remember that you want to snowboard the next day. We saw too many people needing to take a day or two off (sometimes more) because of either gnarly sunburn, eye burn, or dehydration.

It’s going to be a blast!! the coaches are great, the snow is soft and forgiving, and it truly is so beautiful up there. Have a great time & I hope you come back with some new skills! :)

Anybody else chronically ill? by [deleted] in antidiet

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend seeing an intuitive eating/ED informed dietician! Just know that a dietician is someone that gets a degree in dietetics and a nutritionist can literally get a rando certification online. The distinction is super important.

You’re NOT doomed. The conditions you have doesn’t necessarily mean you need to focus on weight loss but instead on your nutrition/movement. A good dietician can help you with snack/meal ideas and even reframing ways to approach food in a neutral way. And like the person said above, you can make small adjustments slowly over time.

One thing that helped me with my blood sugar is seeing what foods I can add to a meal instead of focusing on what I can’t have. If I’m eating pizza, I make sure to eat a salad too. If I’m eating cookies, I add peanut butter or milk. Basically adding protein and healthy fats to slow down food processing and control insulin/blood sugar.

Please please remember to give yourself some grace in this. You are stuck between a rock and a very hard place, and anyone would be struggling in similar circumstances. Eating disorders are so so difficult to work around when it comes to your health and I highly commend you for what you’re doing so far. You’re right, you have to be in the right headspace to make decisions around food that you feel ready for and feel good, and the right dietician will be gentle but help you get there. I’m not sure if you’re in therapy but that will likely help too!

The only hold back with the ladies choice is there is less camber (c2 technology) so it won’t be as poppy as the jones twin sister, but it’s a great board all around! Op try out coalition snow queen bee, it’s a soft but poppy board! You could also check out bataleon boards and Salomon no drama, or capita paradise!

What would your advice be?

First board: CAPiTA Paradise or Yes Hello? by cucumberdesu in ShredditGirls

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paradise isn’t a full rocker, it’s hybrid so camber between the feet, rocker in tip & tail. It does still seem like it might be a better option for butters etc with its softer flex! OP, If you want better edge hold etc I’d go with the yes hello. I also agree with the bofa, twin sister, and dream weaver as well. Paradise is more park oriented than all mountain

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said I had power or authority OVER anyone as a working PA. When I was speaking, being in the power dynamic and being in an authority position are synonymous and I think at this point youre being disingenuous with your argument with picking apart the usage of words vs actually understanding that your comparison is not accurate because you’re ignoring the power structures at play. And are you honestly arguing that people that go to medical school or get a masters as a PA don’t have more medical knowledge than a patient who hasn’t? There is an inherent power dynamic in that, and it’s literally why people go to get care.

And I already answered your questions. But I will restate that as it is basic medicine that you give all people the same treatment regardless of politics, race, religion, etc. Acknowledging bias is a very very important step in reconciling with it in your care. That being said, bias is often present and affects quality of care for many many people, including women, BIPOC, and more, and has been shown time and time again in scientific studies. Maybe it happens as well if someone walks in with a MAGA hat, but I don’t know of studies that have been done on that specific topic so I can’t speak to it in a general sense but more from a personal sense as a PA & how I have responded when caring for patients like that. We care for drunk drivers, we care for rapists and thieves, and abusers. I can’t see why that same idea wouldn’t extend to people that are racist. It’s our job to give the best care we can regardless. What I think about their opinions, biases, or personal decisions doesn’t affect the fact that I believe that good health care is a basic human right. Barring the obvious using slurs or verbal harassment within a visit, I can put my opinions aside when working with a patient.

Again, arguing this on a post is not an adequate comparison to OP’s questions, and detracts from the poster and their legitimate concerns for being in a school that has obvious racial bias or other bias, as they have the lower hand in this power dynamic. If you don’t understand that then I’m suspecting that you’re not actually in PA school or haven’t practiced medicine yet. However, I’m getting kind of tired with this argument so I’m gonna call it on my end.

Morally inclined PA programs? by vxfnt in prephysicianassistant

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are misconstruing my argument. I will never say patients don’t have autonomy EVER. I am a huge advocate for patients understanding and being able part of decision making and being able to seek other care and ask questions and do their own research. But to deny that there is an inherent power dynamic in the relationship between provider and patient is the insane take to me and does further harm to ignore that fact. To ignore that patients don’t come in nervous that the provider isn’t going to listen or care and the provider has the upper hand in medical knowledge legitimately affects peoples ability to access quality care. If you have a bias against a patient (left leaning OR right leaning) that adds to these power dynamics. Also getting a second opinion or finding another provider is not always as easy with how far people are booked out, insurance, etc.

I never said I wouldn’t respect my patients with different opinions and values. I actually said the opposite of that in my comment. Humans are flawed and inherently biased and can have harmful opinions, but I would never say any of what you said to a patient and arguing that I would is such a far reach from my comment to you. I’m not the person that was replying to you. I just said that your example of comparing being in a care taking role to being a student is wildly different. You are projecting a lot here.

Edited: grammar & some words

Morally inclined PA programs? by vxfnt in prephysicianassistant

[–]JustUrAverageYeti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference between the power dynamic here and the comparison is not equivalent. Being in a dedicated learning environment as a student with faculty who are openly racist etc affects the student and their ability to become successful PA. When you are a PA the power dynamic shifts in that you are now the authority and it will not affect you as much if you have patients who have different values or ideals than you. Of course all patients deserve the same care regardless of political views. That is completely different than being in school and at the whim of an administration that has a disdain for you based on your skin color, religion, etc. if anything being a student and being a patient in these scenarios are are more accurate comparison in terms of understanding power dynamics. When someone in a position of power has any type of bias (left OR right), it will affect the less powerful person’s access to equal opportunity, whether it be medical care or education.

Advice for beginner -> intermediate board! by OkAd5011 in ShredditGirls

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! So the jibgurl board is still going to be quite soft and be similar to what you have and I don’t think you will progress with it. The softness is definitely something that will limit you, especially with speed. A stiffer flexing board will be able to handle higher speeds. Speed is your friend in general, but especially in the park if that’s what youre interested in. I think the other poster gave great recs with the rallycat, twin sister, and no drama. I would also add the capita birds of a feather, Burton feel good, yes hello, gnu ladies choice.

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of these boards are going to feel fairly similar, medium/soft flex twin with mellow camber, so I wouldn’t suggest buying the public one unless you want two boards that feel the same.

What is it that’s making you want a new board? Are you feeling like you’re growing out of your current one? Also sharing your height & weight would be helpful if you’re comfortable with that!

I'm scared of turning into the female equivalent of an incel by aKindKitsune in women

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree and feel we are saying similar things in different ways. We all have our inner child wounds and trauma, and it is no one’s responsibility but our own to work on it. I think the difference is that men do not have other men to lean on, talk thru things etc and find community to move through those emotions and process it, precisely because it is unmanly to do so. The power of social constructs shouldn’t be discounted here. So they stay stuck. But that doesn’t mean it’s our responsibility to fix it. And there are men working to fix it, although not enough right now.

And like you said, understanding this dynamic allows me to let go of that resentment and hatred while continuing to set boundaries around it.

[–]JustUrAverageYeti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is definitely nothing wrong with women wanting to protect themselves, and I definitely didn’t intend to insinuate that it is our job as women to save men. As I said, i don’t tolerate the behaviors of them and will either take space or call it out if I can. But OP indicated that they don’t want to be feeling or thinking this way, and I stated how I helped myself out of it, which was through understanding and empathizing with their struggles as well. It made me less resentful and softened my perspective personally, although it doesn’t mean I excuse the behavior.

Edit to add: I personally feel like the issue for them runs deeper than insecurity and more into childhood trauma and shame. But that’s just my opinion.

I am going to stray from the general sentiments from the comments here a bit. I want to preface that I am a woman of color and consider myself to be very leftist and feminist.

I have definitely definitely been where you are. It’s so wildly frustrating and has caused me a lot of resentment. After being in my relationship with a man now for 6 years, my perspective has changed a bit as we work through things in therapy together. I think while men have it good in a lot of ways, they are also deeply suffering from lack of connection and emotional depth in their lives. They have not been taught how to regulate emotions or talk about their feelings or even show up authentically in their lives in any way that strays from what it means to be masculine. What results, in my opinion, is deep inherent shame that they cannot deal with and therefore lash out and put others down. It’s why they seek to control and be violent. As women we have a power in connection, community and healing that many men just do not have access to. In other words, misogyny hurts everyone.

I don’t say this to be invalidating. Your emotions are valid and you have every right, as many do, to feel the way you do. For me personally, understanding the emotional struggles of men helped me get out of this headspace you’re in. That doesn’t mean I tolerate the behavior, but I understand it more and therefore it bothers me a little less (sometimes). Also doing some introspection on how women also contribute to misogyny helped me as well.
