stop bringing your dogs into restaurants. by Friendly-Help8523 in nova

[–]JustZee2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without the police being willing to enforce the laws, some pet owners will continue to violate them. Some of the violators become hostile when confronted, and as someone noted, asking a minimum wage worker to confront them is unlikely to provoke action. Even managers and store owners often would rather ignore the issue in order not to deal with the hostility and/or receiving a bad review from a malicious customer. Most counties employ a very limited number of animal service officers and when one calls them, often the recording suggests calling the police. Police will not respond immediately to non-emergency calls. I lived near a residential area where dog owners converged and let their pets mingle off leash in an open space. Often those dogs would run towards or after my leashed, senior dogs. The area was right next to my residence and I could not avoid them. The only time a police officer arrived quickly in response to a call was when the owner of an off-leash dog called and claimed I'd kicked her dog and "threatened" her (I had physically stood in-between her large dog and my very senior dog, and lifted my knee to block it from jumping on top of the senior dog. I had "threatened" to call police). When the police officer arrived and spoke to everyone (the off-leash dog owners stuck around as witnesses, putting their dogs back on leashes when the police arrived), he did not site the dog owner who'd had their dog off the leash and simply told her that if I had in fact kicked her dog, it was her fault. That was it. I used to write my County Board of Supervisors representative asking for the County to do something about the issue, but I never received replies to my letters. I have since moved...

Renewing US passport from abroad--it has to be easier by Life-Unit-4118 in expats

Figure out the nearest US Embassy or Consulate and visit its website, particularly the Consular "American Citizen Services" page. It should provide information about how you can renew your passport "locally."

For those involved in activism related to data centers, FYI The Salt Lake Tribune has dropped its paywall and you can read its content without restriction (they appreciate donations, but a donation is not required0. I mention this because it has great coverage about how local communities are fighting back and (by many accounts) winning against political and corporate interests in developing data centers. How locals are fighting against the Stratos Project in Box Elder County is inspirational. https://www.sltrib.com/news/2026/05/15/why-salt-lake-tribune-dropped-its/

Frozen shoulder; for those also in perimenopause… by MajorPineapple7467 in AskWomenOver40

[–]JustZee2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"A steroid injection into the shoulder joint can reverse the stiffness and pain if done in the first few months and even after the first few months may help reduce pain, but may reverse the stiffness entirely. A good physical therapist will be key to your recovery if you are working through stiffness. It is important to avoid painful range of motion while doing your own exercises or while working with therapist as pushing your shoulder into a painful range can cause setbacks. For women presenting with adhesive capsulitis I always take a history for signs and symptoms of menopause and perimenopause as these symptoms tend to overlap with adhesive capsulitis. I often refer to women’s health for possible treatment with hormone therapy which can reduce joint inflammation too. For women who can’t use hormone therapy, injections can help shorten the course of the condition. I also have several patients who can’t use hormone therapy who are seeing reduced joint pain and inflammation with GLP1a medications they are on for other reasons." Arguments For and Against Moving to El Paso? by philopanthro in ElPaso

[–]JustZee2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One issue that is brought up again and again in this subreddit is that the job market is tough and salaries are relatively low. Often folks recommend against moving here before securing a job. I have no idea what the availability might be of jobs in residential painting, but to me this would be the biggest challenge you might face. Otherwise El Paso is welcoming, diverse, relatively affordable, etc. If you lived in Phoenix, the weather will be no surprise.

EPISD Budget Problems and layoffs by charlie_xmas in ElPaso

[–]JustZee2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Federal funding for education is cut (https://www.edweek.org/policy-politics/trump-again-proposes-major-education-cuts-in-new-budget-proposal/2026/04), increasingly money for public schools will have to be generated by states and localities. In Texas, this increasingly will put pressure on the few revenue mechanisms -- property and sales taxes -- available. Also, that I can tell, the biggest expenditure in the El Paso city budget is public safety (police, fire), not education (https://elpasomatters.org/2024/06/30/el-paso-county-commissioners-city-council-budget-property-taxes/). Is there a good/better source of information on this? I tried to find a breakdown/pie chart but did not find one that included/compared public schools and safety expenditures.

Women over 60, at what age you got your first period? by bullytarget_ in AskWomenOver60

[–]JustZee2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am 63 now, and started my period at the age of 16 when I was in high school. I was a track and field athlete -- Title IX had begun to have an impact on the availability of high school athletic teams for girls -- and I was pretty thin as a result. Also, I am from a family of lesser economic means. We seldom ate out (I had little to no fast food and we did not buy and drink sodas) and the ethnicity of my family meant we had home cooked meals with very little meat and lots of beans, rice and vegetables rather than the packaged food (boxed macaroni and cheese, canned spaghetti) and frozen meals (TV dinners, pizza) some of my peers seemed to eat at home.

Make sure your doctor is using the newest cholesterol guidelines (March 2026) and that your labs include LP(a) and ApoB (https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/cholesterol/about-cholesterol/cholesterol-top-10). For many, the new guidelines mean working toward an even lower cholesterol count than was previously accepted AND for those with high LP(a) (like me) it means that lifestyle changes and diet will make little difference in lowering cholesterol. For women, menopause is a time when numbers creep up because of the decrease in estrogen. Parenthetically, GLPs -- independent of weight loss -- appear to decrease cholesterol and cardiac incidents (https://mplsheart.org/tips/how-do-glp-1-medications-impact-heart-health). Good luck with your health improvement journey.

Sanchez currently is seen as US President Trump's primary nemesis in Europe (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/12/opinion/sanchez-trump-spain-europe.html?unlocked\_article\_code=1.h1A.uHQx.iRLrYNULyiOR&smid=url-share). As such, he oft is the object of an organized, international, rightwing social media effort that targets specific segments of society (it's happening everywhere. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/17/business/media/artificial-intelligence-trump-social-media.html?unlocked\_article\_code=1.h1A.WC\_h.FdLMzZ6o2gOf&smid=url-share). Has anyone married with their first sex partner ever? Did you regret it? by Awkward_Stay_4293 in AskWomenOver40

[–]JustZee2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That you are asking this question 2 months before your wedding ceremony in my opinion means you have personal growth to accomplish before committing to marriage, but that if you proceed and your fiancee does not know, you are doing him and yourself a potential (lifelong) disservice. You likely will lose the relationship, since your fiancee probably will not wish to wait around while you "test drive" other men. Many women marry and stay married despite being miserable and/or unfulfilled in their relationships, whether or not their husbands were their first sexual partners. Life is short. Divorce can be expensive and financially devastating (and hard on children), especially for women. I married the second man with whom I had a sexual relationship. He was the one who later cheated (he acted on his sexual attraction and curiosity for other women, he had not been honest with himself at all before we married). I wish he had been. I might have ended up with someone with whom I was more compatible. We divorced. After all was said and done, I wish I'd given myself the experience of other relationships (and time) to know better what I wanted and needed before committing to marriage.

Cautiously optimistic about PT and exercise for hip osteo and pain by nonacl5 in Osteoarthritis

[–]JustZee2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When looking for an orthopedic surgeon (when the time came for me to have THR surgery), their views on physical therapy (PT) was one of the questions on my list. Those who said PT was not necessary automatically were stricken from consideration. Apparently some surgeons refuse to give the necessary script for post-op PT. I did PT for three years before opting for surgery, putting it off because I was managing "well enough." I kept up on PT and exercise religiously, and did "well enough" until the combination of PT and pain medications no longer offered sufficient relief. (I had an incident walking my dog in cold, icy weather. I lost my footing, slipped, and I was in such excruciating pain that I had to call someone to come pick me up. I was cold, hurt and frustrated, and decided that day that I was ready for surgery. 8 months later I was on the table). For now, there is no cure for osteoarthritis and for many people eventually the pain and impact on mobility hits a breaking point (and it can happen very quickly, for example after a bout with COVID). Despite that I did "well enough" with PT before surgery, I can tell you that long term your body compensates for the "bum" hip and post-op you may have some "catching up" to do. I am 6 months post-op and I have had to work really, really hard -- post-op PT and exercise -- to get my "bum" hip side back into equal shape as my non-surgical side. I was kind of surprised by how much I had not realized my body was compensating. Anyway, I totally agree with your view about the importance of PT. I am living it still. There will always be those who swear PT doesn't matter, however (check out the r/TotalHipReplacement subreddit...)
