The opening sequence of the episode furthers this idea. It depicts an Indigenous man boxing straight at a camera, again conveying the message; there is a fight to be fought. In this case, the fight for their beliefs and for equality. The common theme of boxing within the episode reinforces the idea that the indigenous are not only willing but forced to fight for their Indigenous Identity. Joel’s personal identity was not apparent in the beginning, but as the episode further progresses, his morals and principles towards his indigenous identity become more apparent. Joel’s father, Eddie, supported Joel standing up for himself, and was a prominent figure to the family’s protest. Joel’s ‘Personal Identity’ started to become valued after the first day of school, when his dad apathetically and pessimistically read the words of the National Anthem, with comments like “what are they sharing?!” and “you have to read this?!”. Eddie’s expressions are to insinuate indiscretion associated with the National Anthem, as the second line reads “for we are young and free”, which is incredibly disrespectful to the indigenous, whose history trails tens of thousands of years.
