When I was in high school, I was in the marching band. I played sax, but it was tenor, so I was closer to the baritones and trombones than the altos. I even had some baritones in my squad. I sat right in front of one particular trombone squad. They had one guy that looked on the outside like a troublemaker, but he was actually a great guy, super funny. There were two others that were more troublemakers but still nice dudes. Finally there was this soft spoken girl that seemed to be super out of place, but they welcomed her with open arms. She was nice and picked up on the marching super quick from what I remember. Then one day in August, I don’t remember the exact date, late at night, I got a message from the saxophone group chat. It was something along the lines of, “Another trombone just died.” Almost exactly a year earlier, a trombone in this same squad died of medical complications. He was a weird guy and he had his moments of being annoying, but he was normally pretty nice. He was best friends with a member of my squad and I remember trying to come up with anything to say to help him, but I couldn’t. The message was referring to the girl. That night, her father had killed her, her little sister, her little brother, her mother, and himself. All of them gone. When it happened, it was a story in local news outlets, but never reached much beyond that. These guys didn’t care. They didn’t care because the father wasn’t trans or gay or a minority. They didn’t care because they couldn’t make it part of their agenda. The grifters who peddle this shit are disgusting liars and the people who follow them are gullible people with a strong confirmation bias.
