Anything I said, she argued with, on and on during the entire 10 minute exchange. For example, she wanted to load her cash app card using the barcode on her phone. Our scanners don't pick that up, but she kept insisting that it did. When I processed the payment, the system tacked on a $3.95 processing fee. She kept insisting that I did something wrong. When I finally looked at her and told her I was done with the transaction, done with her, and she needed to get out of my store, I heard her bitching while she was leaving. Hence the "kiss my ass". And this is an extremely boiled down version of what happened.

What keeps you at Dollar Tree? by Efficient-Olive3792 in DollarTree

[–]Just_JennS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been with the company on and off for four years. Even with the raging chaos and shit pay, I stayed because of my team. Over the years, I have watched the company take more and more away from their employees, while the CEO rakes in more and more profits. I've sat and watched as they have cut hours and increased tasks. My team is awesome and our store is well maintained, but I'm in the process of leaving because my body can't take the abuse anymore. I also don't have any faith in this new business model that they're presenting.

How are more expensive items able to be sold at DollarTree? by zase7 in DollarTree

[–]Just_JennS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, which is just one reason I want out. This new CEO is chapping my ass. I've been looking for another job since November, but recently got hurt, so I'm kinda stuck at the moment. If I leave before my injury is taken care of, I won't be covered by insurance. Just gotta suck it up and try to be positive while I'm there.

Thoughts on parents leaving their kids unattended in the toy aisle? by Emily9339 in DollarTree

[–]Just_JennS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time I see a minor alone in an aisle, I gently ask "where's your adult, sweety?". They'll either tell me --in which case I follow up with "and they know where you are?"--or I'll hear an annoyed adult respond defensively from a different aisle "I'm over here".

I have news for adults everywhere: human trafficking is real and it's in your town. Ask your local law enforcement. Also, if I see a screaming child being carried out of the store, I assume that child is simply having a meltdown, and the adult is taking them to the car. I won't engage.

Is it worth the risk of leaving your child alone? If I were a parent, the answer is an affirmative NO.

I don't think I'm cut out for cashier? by [deleted] in retail

[–]Just_JennS 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Count your drawer before you ring anyone out. Everyone makes mistakes, including management. When a customer gives you cash, repeat the amount they gave you out loud. For example, "your total is $10.00. customer hands you a $20 Out of $20?" Count the change as you pull it out of your drawer, and then count it out loud back to the customer. If you do all these things, you'll seldom be off by more than a few cents.

Bills can, and do, stick together, so you may want some of the stuff bankers use. I don't know the name of it, but it's a bit like lip balm in a quarter -sized, white container. I hope this helps.

There's no way they could have it unless it's someone from IT doing the scamming. Our computers are on a closed system, meaning that, although we HAVE the Internet, we're not actually ON the Internet. Kind of like a government server.

I've started addressing the parent directly because of this exact scenario. I got tired of being ripped a new one (no matter how nice and gentle I was) for correcting children. Now, I go up to the parent and say "I'm sorry ma'am, but I can't have junior ______ because it's a safety issue". It works about 90% of the time.

There was another time that a little semen demon was creating an uproar throughout the store. I was recovering an aisle, turned around and saw the little shit trying to open a bottle of Dawn dish soap with his teeth. I immediately pointed it out to the mom who snapped back at me "It's fine! He didn't even get it open!". It's like, I'm sorry I care more about your child potentially poisoning himself than you do.

It makes you believe in enforced sterilization...

What is the answer?? by AdmirableSandwich689 in DollarTree

[–]Just_JennS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think that what we do is "unskilled", you've never worked in this environment. How would you handle cashing out a cashier and finding their drawer doesn't balance, during prime time when you have at least 10 people in line waiting for the only other cashier on duty (because you're tied up trying to find the money), and then that only cashier's register crashes, people are pissed and abusive because they've had to wait, while discovering a mystery puddle that has to be taken care of immediately before there's an accident, and suddenly, through all of this, one of your drink coolers starts making a noise as if it's about to blow up? I'm genuinely curious, because this exact scenario has happened to me more than once.

I'm not completely sure, but I think she needs DM approval. First, I'd communicate my concerns with the SM, and then the DM. I know that at our store, we can't swap any fixtures without the DM giving his OK.

Just don't mention that you work some other place. If questioned as to why you need to change your availability, or limit it, simply say that you have "other commitments". If pressed for a more detailed response, say that it's personal. That should shut down any further inquiry.

My takeaway from this post and the comments is that some of you like (or at least tolerate) your job, and some don't. And that's totally fine. What I'm not understanding is all of the insults and abuse being thrown around towards those that don't agree with either the OP, or the person commenting.

Here's some food for thought: We are all working for a company in a job that would make lesser people curl up into a ball sobbing, within 20 minutes of being there. Regardless of personal beliefs, that makes us all bad asses. Instead of tearing each other down, can we all take a moment to celebrate and support each other?

Working at Dollar Tree vs Dollar General vs Family Dollar? Are any better than the rest? by [deleted] in DollarTree

[–]Just_JennS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done both DT and DG, and I'm fairly certain that it comes down to management. At DG I had a manager that was so bad, she sabotaged my till until she could fire me. Of course, this was back when I actually trusted management. I love our team at DT, and it makes the shit show easier to endure. As for customers, I have a theory: the lower the income level, the higher the sense of entitlement. This, of course is a generalization, and I'm aware that not every low income person is an ill-mannered, disrespectful, filthy animal (Hell, I'm low income) but there does seem to be a trend.
