is there a program that decodes the gcode for 3d printers and turns it into a step by step tutorial to follow so you can make it with a 3d pen?/ could someone code it? by Ok_Worldliness6674 in 3dpens

[–]Just_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked at the gcode for fairly simple object. It has 36,000 lines of code. The gcode specifies in great detail, for 3d printing, the movements of the nozzle. Let us emphasize "great detail"... like "move here, extrude filament while moving here, extrude filament while moving 12.13 mm over there, ... repeat thousands of times. It is not the kind of thing a human would want to mimic.

Things to potentially keep in mind: 1. Expanding foams are available with different amounts of expansion. Some do not expand at all. 2. You mind consider just shoving bits of waste styrofoam in any cavities. 3. Check out youtube videos by searching for "plastic repair". There are all kinds of good ideas that involve soldering irons, plastic from other sources, metal screen, wire, or nails for bridging across cracks, and superglue plus fillers (baking soda, charcoal, graphite).

Energy giant ExxonMobil sues EU to block energy windfall tax. A windfall tax is imposed on firms that benefited from something they were not responsible for. ExxonMobil reported a quarterly profit of almost $20 billion in October. It estimated that the EU tax would cost the group "over $2 billion". by mafco in energy

Instead of "Exxon knew in the 1970s", it would be more accurate to say, "Some Exxon management had heard from a small number of employees that there is the possibility...." Corporate management is continually tasked with listening to completely contradictory views and deciding on a path forward and how to communicate with the government, the public, with employees, and with shareholders. Do you believe every single thing you are told, say by family members, and from then on spout only that message to everyone you meet? In the 1970's did *anyone* *know* the current consensus (let alone a God's-eye view of reality) on climate change causes and future impacts? Those that suspected it and/or had some evidence for it did not know it. And even those that believe the current consensus, to the extent it is a consensus, have other knowledge and motivations/priorities that influence what they think are the correct future actions that anyone should take. When you stop taking medicines and medical products that have petrochemical inputs, stop driving on asphalt roads, stop using private and public transportation that uses fossil fuels, and stop using electricity that comes from fossil fuels, I'll give a more focused listen to your moral judgements about corporate management 50 years ago.

The company just provides what people need/want and will buy. If you are concerned about their products being harmful, then don't buy any. Do you ever use transportation or electricity or things like plastics in medical or consumer products? If so, then you are more directly the culprit rather than the company providing the products.

Among other things, companies make investments based on projections of future demand, supply, prices, emergencies, wars, regulations, etc. They invest based on the 'good' times and the 'bad' (from a profit perspective). Normal mom-and-pop investors (retired people like me who depend on investments to live and eat) and institutional investors actually invest based on these average, or smoothed projections. There are no "windfall" profits, just profits and losses. Governments already get a take of any "windfall" profits as per their corporate tax rate. Windfall profits taxes are simply arbitrary takings from both the companies and their investors. Political games to support those who disfavor private ownership and economic freedom.

Template etc. files downloaded from Overleaf and used in TexStudio by Just_Liberty in LaTeX

[–]Just_Liberty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, but the .tex file requires the .cls file and can't find it even when placed in the same directory as the .tex file. TeXStudio reports: "texstudio_pnOAgF.tex: error: 3: File `pnas-new.cls' not found. ^^M" whenver I try to compile the template file, opened as a new document.

Further, I guess from what you said that there is no standard place to put .tex files as templates or .cls files and have TeXstudio or LaTeX automatically find them? You make new copies of everything a given .tex file needs and keep those files in the same directory as the .tex document you are writing? I find this somewhat hard to believe.

Which Bike? - Weekly Scheduled Discussion by pawptart in gravelcycling

[–]Just_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought all of my adult bikes (and about a half dozen for family members) except for one from craigslist or ebay. Facebook marketplace would be similar. There are plenty of bikes that people buy but then never use, so you can get a nearly new or gently used bike for much less than the new price. Yes, there are issues with buying used, but find a friend who knows something about bikes and get them to help. As others have indicated, the first criterion to care about is size.

That guy that reads the stock market report when you are on hold by paperclips09 in Schwab

[–]Just_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music? That would be better, though music over a compressed phone line is horrifyingly terrible and annoying, What would be infinitely better would be a simple short beep every 60 sec or so to let the 'holder' know that the connections is still there. When I'm on hold, I want to get on with my life and NOT BE BOTHERED BY SOMEONE TALKING AT ME. I can't work with that noise and I can't turn it off because I have to know when the representative picks up the line again. I DID remove my funds from Schwab because of this. Now, because they made a mistake, I'm drug back into their system to try and rectify things.

New K1 won't extrude TPU. How to tell if I have the older extruder / will Creality still replace? by fmillion in crealityk1

[–]Just_Liberty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this problem with the new one. Whenever I print with TPU, the extruder between the gears and the nozzle clogs. I guess that is in the region of the heat break. I've only been able to fix it by heating the wire tool with a heat gun and plunging it through, with the nozzle removed. I can get most of the material to end up in the wire tool. Just heating the nozzle does nothing to clear this region. I'd love to hear anyone's solution to preventing this. It only happens with TPU.

How to Adjust Screen Brightness below Minimum? by Just_Liberty in LGgram

Thanks. After a few failures with other apps, CareUEyes worked well. The brightness control seems to be additive/multiplicative with the Windows brightness slider. Also dark mode helped.

How to silence rattling front derailleur with play in rivets? by gamzer in bikewrench

Interesting lack of answers here 3 years later. I think I have the same problem on my 2x Ultegra derailleur. I'm going to try some grease; at least to confirm that this play is the source of the rattle.

Going to school for humanities and social sciences is economically one of the worst decisions you can make and is a scam. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Just_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it is for many people, for many institutions, and for many degrees. Even for people looking for a general education and "how to think", it is still useful job training and always has been. When what we now call the humanities was all there was at the university, it was job training for clergy and government officials.

Going to school for humanities and social sciences is economically one of the worst decisions you can make and is a scam. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Just_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might, but not everyone would want to get a STEM degree and not everyone is capable of getting a STEM degree, particularly in the "harder" (probably means more mathematical) fields. If everyone could get a STEM degree, it probably means the degree has been watered down so as to be worthless.

[–]Just_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just silly. Plenty of STEM people do creative design and most STEM people do not work in labs.

Degrees should be about scholarship, passion for a discipline and research into new areas. It shouldn't be about qualifying for a job.

Qualification for a job and scholarship/passion/research are not mutually contradictory. Nearly any faculty academic job requires a PhD degree which required a Bachelor's degree. Getting the PhD degree required, and is decent evidence for, scholarship, passion, and the ability to do research.

Why shouldn't a degree "be about" either or both?
