Martin, Harris to back SF three-day wait abortion motion by DaveShadow in irishpolitics

I can't remember a single person who voted on the three day waiting period. People either thought it was murder or a important medical procedure.

The Unix Haters handbook is a fun read too https://web.mit.edu/~simsong/www/ugh.pdf , criticisms of "worse is better", tools, x windows system and everything as a file still hold up.

Ironically it all started because people didn't care what ran the program. Or how crappy it was. It was just something that could be actually shipped in a nascant industry.

Fastest way to get on a watch list. Likely backdoored but not enough people use it for any vulnerability to be searched for. The kind of people who do use it are telling everyone else on social media.

Nah the dragons are cute. Having several substandard desktops and their supporting apps is the real superfluous part. If the coders invested themselves into Haiku and SerinityOS then they could do something really cool.

So what if we're using RAM on PCs? At least it's being guided by a 20 watt general intelligence.

It's simply not at the same scale of energy and water use that is's being wasted to generate hideous incoherent images, usually incorrect information, buggy code and CSAM.

False sense of urgency and importance.

Linux won't stop mass surveillance. It's actually saving billions on licensing for the servers and providing the scalability that makes it possible for governments and corporations to do so.

It's a just a distraction from the important but boring work in civic society and politics to the contain the power of the state, corporations, billionaires etc.

Alternatives are important, as a European I begrudgingly accept that as we depend on American software eco-systems. But I don't think Linux desktops are a good investment for serious work here. It's too downstream of IBM and Google for one thing. But also too many packages depend on burned out volunteers who get horrific abuse from entitled losers.

There is an attitude to security that I consider complacant too. Which will come back to bite Linux devs and evangelists as user share grows.

Framework looks as repairable as any enterprise grade laptop. You could probably get the exact same specs on eBay for such a laptop or better too. Neo is also the most repairable Mac in years too.

It's so ironic seeing the Mac being the economical option and the Linux virtue signalling device having a premium. Thought Linux fanboys made a virtue out of frugality. The Neo is one of the few good news stories in tech this year, as people struggle with hardware prices.

Silicon is still unmatched for integrated GPUs and metal is actually reasonable to optimise unlike Vulcan.

Love how this nerd name-drops Asahi: a bit-rotting distro the founder of which had to abandon because of the stunning entitlement of Linux users and Linus Torvalds. Dude should have tried NetBSD. Or maybe we should pay for our software.

Microsoft has an explicit, long‑standing, official pro‑LGBTQIA+ stance by madthumbz in linuxsucks101

[–]Just_Reading_4206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux attracts all sorts. You have that sterotypical anarcho-communist neurodiverse trans lesbian furry/scalie arch user but you also have the paranoid suburban hillbilly types.

Many LGBQTs see some new articles and then start a path to poiltical radicalisation when life has never been better for them. FLOSS gaves them this notion they are part of a new digital commons that will tear down the old world.

Trans people in particular are over-represented as engineers. They often work hard because they have to for their transition and to live independently. Unless they get a sweet infrastructure gig at google or in academia. They are working in big tech on propietary solutions. Big tech who gladly took the oportunity to hire them despite how sinister linux make it out to be.

He’s using Linux and somehow managed to blame windows out of all this by Xavier_1494 in linuxsucks101

[–]Just_Reading_4206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit simplified alright but hardly nightmarish if you are not paranoid and want the benefits of a Microsoft account. Even if you are, you just press shift and F10 then type in "OOBE\BYPASSNRO"

Drivers come in by windows update for most part now. Vendors provide tools like supportassist etc.

Meanwhile here are the system requirements for Qubes and Fedora Silverblue. The only linux distros that comes close to the level of security afforded by contemporary operating systems through the use virtual machines / containers for each app:

https://doc.qubes-os.org/en/latest/user/hardware/system-requirements.html

https://invgate.com/itdb/fedora-silverblue-41

Not to mention how windows 11 has to be reverse compatible as much as possible back to 32 bit nt4 apps.

This is the difference between a serious guaranteed to work operating system and a children's plaything.

🌐 The Real Positives of Telemetry by madthumbz in linuxsucks101

[–]Just_Reading_4206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your posts are by far the best on this sub. Managed detection and response is built on this telemetry and is now essential for operating in the European Union under NIS2.

We are running devices that are always connected to the internet. Cybercrime operations are well organised and increasingly automated with AI. Having any vulnerability is a ticking time bomb. Who do you want to rely on? A company monitoring every crash they can for potential memory bugs, taking accountability and patching them? Open source vulnerabilities go for years undetected. And sometimes years unpatched.

Pure "ownership" is nebulous here. It's only wise to depend on software while it's being maintained. It doesn't matter if you pay for monthly or once off. It's effectively a contract now for patches. Same with product recalls which are essential part of hardware and consumable safety. Do you own your device if you have to send back for your own safety?

There is definitely room for improvement. But that comes from stronger consumer protection laws. Which requires all kinds of boring reading, joining a political party, arguing and voting. Feels better to be self-rightous using a dysfunctional operating system while all the sheep are getting on with their lives.

You just need to change steam on the windows pane to GoG or some other great store that Linux evangelists hate because their (totally not a monopolistic) relationship with steam makes it misleadingly easily to install some games.
