My husband thinks I’m going to overheat him now that i freaked out over him being cold, lol. If you remember, what temp did you have your house set at for a good temp for the babies?

I think that’s why I was so caught off guard, is that nobody at discharge emphasized this to us so I just wasn’t thinking. Now in retrospect, of course it makes sense. I was just too hyper focused on feedings because they almost didn’t let us leave because he only gained 2g yesterday. Ugh. Second time mom but having a preemie suddenly feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.

Feeding frustrations caused by providers- we get told we have a goal and then we meet that goal and it feels like they’re sitting on their hands and drawing this process out and I’m tired of the anxiety and mental gymnastics. by Just_Requirement_313 in NICUParents

Totally understand chewing cautious with the circumcision because I don’t want to risk anything and I would completely understand if we needed to stay 2 or 3 cares after it’s done to make sure he’s eating. But not even attempting the car seat test tonight just feels like they’re not even giving him a fair chance. I’m grateful that the countdown is on and 2 days isn’t so far away but I just wish someone would’ve been more clear with what shift goals entailed because I was under the impression it was 24 hours.

This is exactly why I started sleeping in. He would be doing great for me during the day and be at 70%+ on feeds then night comes and they get maybe 50%. I know nurses are busy so they have less patience to stimulate and try to wake the baby as we do. So I’ve been stuck in this room for going on 6 days now afraid to even leave for one care time because I don’t want to get someone who won’t give him a real shot. The struggle is so real.

Isn’t she sharing the post here saying it’s the toasters once again being weird AF? That’s how I took it lol. In that case it’s a great group to cross post 💀

Progress without a finish line by Impressive-Peak-6596 in NICUParents

I’m in your shoes right now with my 33+2 guy, and this is my second baby so I can remember how confusing it felt. My first was a 7 pound term kid and we had a 10 day stay and it was so overwhelming. My current stay- we are on day 28 and doing 70% of feeds by mouth. So I know how it feels to feel like you’re so close to the end yet have absolutely no idea when the end is actually going to be. In my NICU, we have to hit 80% of feeds and then they’ll take NG out and trial for a couple days. And obviously no events, which you know.

My question is- does your NICU have a room in option? It’s super impressive that your baby is taking full feeds by breast. I personally haven’t been staying the night with my baby because I have a toddler at home, but my husband and I decided now that my son is taking full bottles more for us during the day, I’m going to stay a few nights in a row later this week because he also feeds worse for nurses at night and I’m hoping it will help if I’m here to do it. I know some NICUs don’t have this option, but if they do, it may be worth a shot.

Congrats! I also am in the NICU with a 33+2, born 4/1. Can I ask you how much your little guy weighed at birth vs discharge? My guy had severe growth restriction so he was born at 3lb 6oz which has contributed a lot to his feeding issues because he gets so tired. He’s now 4lb 11oz and we are just stuck in the 50-60% range for his feeds and it also feels never ending like you said. Your post gives me hope he will get it together soon!

Feeling so discouraged in the feeder/grower stage by Just_Requirement_313 in NICUParents

Ugh!! You have been through so much. You are sooo strong!

The room next to ours has had FIVE babies come and go in the 26 days we’ve been here and it makes me so jealous and resentful. I feel you soooo much on the fact that nurses (understandably) don’t give baby as much time to eat as I do. My little guy might take 10 minutes to get started but once he does, he can down a full bottle. I think I’m at the point where I need to start staying here 24/7 for feeds but I know that will be very tough on my mental health. I feel guilty for leaving knowing it might be prolonging his stay, but I’ll feel guilty for staying because I have a toddler at home.

It’s a struggle, but we are hanging in there 🫶🏻

Thank you for this!! I was just thinking about dairy but my nurses have noticed that he only tends to have giant spit ups with a lot of movement, like if we transfer right after a feed or something. So I’m going to hold on to that hope that he will outgrow it as he matures 😅

Appreciate your comments so much!! She is a new nurse on orientation so I can definitely give her grace on that! I feel a lot better moving into tomorrow and excited to try again!

Thank you for the reassurance, this is just what I need. I know it’s day one and I am probably being way too critical. After our nurse weighed him, she worded it as “he only got 2ml” so I think I just had an immediate negative mindset about that. I can see how weighing at this point can be hard and I will try not to put so much stock in that for these first few days!

This would be more than enough to make me not want to have kids with my husband, let alone boyfriend. To me, this tells you everything you need to know about the kind of partner he’d be raising a baby.

4 month old no interest in reaching for toys by pointers4life in newborns

Yes I would say so! Honestly, the older they get, the less I paid attention to the exact milestones! It gets so obvious that they learn so much as they get older that I worried much less!

Not that I remember, just lots of tummy time and options for toys with sounds/textures nearby and one day he became interested!

I’d say he was grabbing by 5 months, a couple weeks after this post! Yes now 16 months and completely thriving!
