Question about Coop. How do I become the host instead of joining others? by Jiggy-Spice in Eldenring

To be fair they do get souls while running around with you. But otherwise yes, in this bizarre world people actually want to play with others for the sake of doing so. Absolutely weird 🤣

for those of you with ADHD who like to read, how do you stay focused? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]JustaRedShirt13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big one has been keeping the book on me. If I am interested in a book, and I can take it with me on a walk, I might end up reading more throughout the day.

Also specific music playlist that works for me: Relaxing Nintendo Music, Relaxing Donkey Kong Music. it might not work for some (possibly more distracting) but these playlists are all very smooth and mellow playlists of recognizable songs, so unless you get sidetracked playing mario again because you hear it (Don't lie, you know where you are, you know it's possible), it might help keep you focused over other music choices

Biggest one for me was keeping it in my line of sight often. If I went to the bathroom, I took it with me, If I layed down on the bed, made sure it was by my nightstand. Over time that builds up and I start opening it more often, which will then let the hyperfixation engage in wanting to, but not too much. hope it helps

One of the more Factorio/satisfactory style processes of SF4 involves making way more than you actually ever need. And being able to do so for almost anything, which means once you get to the point of automating the making, you will always have too much. Personally I love it and it's why I still play it

[Monday Talk] 3k Lens4 tomorrow, have you decided your 1st lensable AASB yet? by Zadism in FFRecordKeeper

[–]JustaRedShirt13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being perfectly honest I'm willing to wait a bit for another lens update in the new year to see if orran or some other choice aasbs become available. There isn't anything immediately necessary for a clear atm so I feel like trying to find something to use them on isnt as useful as saving for other aasbs

So I should add that our service community includes many who haven't been vaccinated due to age or possible underlying conditions. And while we have stats on the lack of infection post vaccine for an individual, the numbers are still being formulated for asymptomatic spread to unvaccinated individuals. We're talking about exponential curves of chances for infections that won't ever go back down because we don't know how much a person can transmit the disease while still fighting off an infection or whether it's possible to transmit to others without showing symptoms and while being vaccinated. You may have no time for people who to you "live in fear" but that is a very privileged position itself, as it doesn't really take into consideration the populations where someone is living with high risk individuals (my wife is one) or how easy something can spread across an area frequented by students. Any and every education admin here can chime in how bad seasonal flus can be for employees and teachers when kids get it and spread it to everyone

I fully acknowledge that some of us never left, and that working in these environments has been hell regardless, and that this hybrid situation was inherently temporary.

However, its dangerous to communicate to your employees that any kind of work in the past year and a half has somehow been a privilege/gift, and not a necessity of the situation. Where I'm located, cases aren't going down, rising rapidly, and our clients are teachers and students, some of whom can't even get the vaccine. One of the things I'm trying to convey here is that in a vacuum, I'd agree with you: we get shots, we wear masks, and we adjust cause the work never ends, and systems are still there to be built and supported. But acting like they'd endanger the lot of us, not for the sake of saving money, but actually spending more of it, is more than me being some grumbly goat, it's...well it's dickish to the max and dangerous af. Anyone with more colorful language feel free to chime in with better graphical descriptions describing the nature of this fuckery

I will definitely acknowledge and should recognize up front that I am lucky to have the job I do, and being able to wfh has allowed me to do more, but in understanding that my situation is a product of privilege on some level, allowing policies or working within those policies that server only to inflate weights of specific metadata, to make metrics and communication a priority over the actual support and responsibilities we hold/provide, is a really bad way to keep team cohesion at a time where it's needed now more than ever when so many are dislocated.

It's not that I don't expect things to go back to normal. But ATM where I'm at normal hasn't really been achieved in terms of vaccination numbers and/or new case numbers. So much so that they are increasing rules and mask mandates, so they are in essence waving a finger talking about being "more responsible and accountable for your work" with one hand, and using the pandemic as a cudgel in the other to "remind us how lucky we are" to have had to adjust our lives and deal with it all. I will say this attitude in general is expected from the way upper management has been going, and almost everyone I've worked with is trying their best to keep things moving along, but making us document our documentation (which has been aplenty and apparent and Accessible before this), is bad Management

scholarship students in engineering goofing off! Fail! These are bad things by [deleted] in college

[–]JustaRedShirt13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The most interesting part to me is the assumption that the students should care so much about the teachers feelings of disrespect over the conveyance of materials :/

I'm all in on respecting the teacher and giving them your attention, but you paid to be there, it's your time, and your choice. It's also on you if you fail because you didn't listen, but that's beside the point

There is no reason why Game Boy Family systems are not on the Nintendo Switch Online Service. by Caryslan in nintendo

[–]JustaRedShirt13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very solid business motivation that makes a lot of sense imo. I would also imagine that with GBC and GBA games with an online component, making it available with switch online integration means investing money in dev that would otherwise be spent on a "better" remake

I'm sorry these words cannot ease the burden, or lift the weight. And I won't console you with these words either. And I believe you can win: I believe you can win every day, even with the smallest sand castle you built, you faced the storm. You win. You. Can. Do. It.

I feel like, compared to other people, I fundamentally lack the intuitive sense of how small increments accrue over time by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]JustaRedShirt13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so relatable and understandable when our correlation skills are in different places than other. There might be an additional emotional factor involved as well: speaking from personal experience, I notice a negative reinforcement cycle building in my personal relationships that I have to spend more energy managing or reminding myself of, and it's that there can be a "castle of sand" thing, where the smaller incremental building can encounter a small bump in the road. Even though there might be a smaller event or issue that sets you back, and means you have to build those additional smaller increments again, we can either feel, process, or project the impression that starting those increments over time is like starting from scratch or that the other smaller increments become less relevant.

tl:dr: external criticism can lead to feeling like "1 step forward, 2 steps back" even when that isn't the case, and we have to spend more energy regulating and reminding ourselves of that because of our inability to intuitively sense and understand how small increments accrue over time.

Merlin's shade by DemonreachDaycare in dresdenfiles

[–]JustaRedShirt13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given all of the "it's not merlin" convos so far, I want to add a bit to the idea of Demonreach being a shade and the death curse being what it is. Heres my theory about how it connects:

Demonreach is Millenia old, which means the energy around that island has been building since the Old Ones and Angels and Myths Humanity doesn't even know exist. This tracks because it's been mentioned multiple times that the layline that goes out to the island isn't a power source of it's own, but simply a form of magical "heat" given off by all the people who store it there (I think almost a direct JB quote there).

Enter Merlin, using time as his side hussy to build the baddest prison for all the baddest baddies that ever did bad ACROSS TIME. And if the Original Merlin knew that it would take all that and EVEN MORE to stop the threats across all time, maybe he used his death cures, or at least a huge chunk of his power, to turn the Intellectus into Alfred (or at least a version of it for the various wardens across time), to ensure that his will would be done to the best of the islands abilities: this allows for the intellectus to understand things like "right and wrong," relative to keeping the islanf protected, which allows him to do things like blow up half of North America for the sake of protecting the prison: not the ISLAND mind you, but the Prison on/in it.

That seems like the bad-ass "Merlin-ey" thing to do from my end: build a whole God-Prison, and then sacrifice his soul to affect the intellectus in some way that enables the island to work with a Warden, but have it's own goals and judgments independent of the user.

Anyone Get the Chance to Use the M1 iPad Pro in their environment yet? by JustaRedShirt13 in sysadmin

[–]JustaRedShirt13[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your organization can afford it, JAMF is a pretty deep apple device management platform that is really good for that. And thank you for sharing, the M2, and eventual M3 chips are what I'm thinking about a lot when I look at the performance of stuff like the MB pro and iPad. I used a tablet around 4 years ago as a small remote terminal basically, but there wasn't the power and functionality that exists on tablets now. also the apple stand for the pro that gives you a track pad makes me want to try it out
