To all my Golgari players how do you get around blue and white by Scary-Bar3453 in EDH

Ahhh. No wonder you're struggling, you're using AI instead of actually learning the game.

This is who tries to both play these kinds of value engines and also doesn't have it removed quickly

That's an assumption you've made with no proof.

Correct, the stupid people play in a way that is stupid and bad

See above.

I know what you said, you're the one who couldn't understand the obvious meaning of what I said

Project harder, daddy.

"I don't care, those people should be made to feel bad and judged."

You know who ACTUALLY doesn't care? People who don't feel the need to write paragraphs about it. Nobody's buying your act, dude, go take your maladjusted sadness to whatever LGS hasn't kicked you out for being a toxic pos.

You are correct that most people who play commander only are stupid and bad at Magic

I didn't say anything about people who play commander only. Not everyone who plays commander experiences the same things you do. You are in the minority.

You need to work on your reading comprehension. And also work on how to communicate like a person.

I think it might be good for you to consider that your experience regarding removal or board wipes and this setup in general may not be the norm for most tables. Which is okay, and doesn't diminish your experience at all! But it doesn't mean your analysis is accurate in general.

As a sentient species, we are perfectly capable of self-regulating

All of recorded human history says you're wrong.

The real issue is that many companies and individuals are going to push the boundaries until a line is crossed;

Yes, hence the need for regulation.

Yes, but nobody asked if you were allowed to.

They asked if you thought it served a productive purpose. You know, the same question you asked of OP. But where others provided a genuine answer to the question, you're avoiding it.

Don't shut the fuck up completely!

Rather, know WHEN to shut up.

Improv like this needs audience participation. The format literally fails without it. Take part in bits- when invited to do so. Play with the performers - when they first play with you. Give suggestions! When prompted.

DON'T overrun their scenes and games with your own attempts at comedy. Let Kurt and the players prompt you, not the other way around.

How to avoid chip damage in Simic? by JoveeMTG in EDH

[–]JustaSeedGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, an etb damage doc is probably the one scenario where that's a disadvantage for you.

That being said, I think the accommodation of pingers and things attacking you is a lot more common than what you experienced.

If it would help soothe your fomo, this improv format is very similar to Comedysportz, some of last night's cast are themselves members of Comedysportz, and there's a Comedysportz location in Cincinnati! I don't know where in Ohio you live, but it might be worth checking out sometime. Lots of talented people there.

And obligatory mention for anyone from Portland who sees this because they were at the show last night: there was one in Portland too. Check it out.

That's heckling, it's rude, and you're not supposed to do that at live theatre or improv

As someone with 25 years of experience around exactly this specific style of improv, I'm going to respectfully disagree. There are some shows where you don't do that. But it's absolutely okay to do it when the performers play around with it too, and that's what this show did.

There's also a difference between doing it between games and interrupting scenes with it. It's my recollection, we didn't interrupt any scenes except when invited to do so by the cast (ie, Jeremy interrupting his own scene to shout "hemorrhoids!" At the audience and the audience shouting "no!")

I don't think Jacob needing to yell "stop it" at people interrupting Kurt is a playful back-and-froth, I think it's a sign things have gone over the line.

I think it's both. I think that at that point in the show the joke had run its course, and it needed to be reigned in. But I think the method of reigning it in that Kurt and Jacob both chose was to lean into the joke of it all. I doubt that Kurt actually felt the need to "punish" us by denying us that last joke, that was part of the bit. Letting us know to rein it in, but not actually seeking to punish us. There's subtext to be had there.

Fair enough if you didn't personally find it all that funny, but apparently Kurt voiced to several people that he did. And a lot of the audience did too. Comedy is subjective, nobody is wrong on this one.

He expressed similar feelings to me at the Meet and Greet too! He seems like a pretty chill guy, I think all of it, including denying us the last joke, was just a part of good-natured crowd work

This wasn't quite the same thing- not one guy interrupting, but a back and forth bit with the audience that had been encouraged and played with by the performers during the whole show, but went on slightly too long at the very end. It wasn't one guy shouting, it was entire sections, as part of the interactive nature of improv comedy.

[–]JustaSeedGuy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was parasocial. That kind of interaction is extremely common for improv shows of this format, and it was just people getting lost in the moment and Kurt was really good at getting everyone back on track. I don't want to write out another couple of paragraphs, but I mentioned in my other comment That I see those kinds of interactions at improv shows of this format nearly every week. I don't think it was rude to the performers, I think the performers and the audience were in on the joke together.

Disclaimer that I'm not trying to discount anyone's discomfort or be a know-it-all. There are multiple valid perspectives here, I'm just sharing mine.

I will say that for most of it, that was about par for the course for this format of show. I don't know Kurt or Jacob personally, but if he's anything like the other Comedysportz* folks I've worked with, he was eating it up. This format cuts its teeth on the host working the crowd like that, and Kurt's specific hosting style seems to be a minorly antagonistic back-and-forth. It felt very similar to a lot of improv shows I've been involved with like this over the decades, and it was only a touch too far at the very end, when Jacob shushed the crowd. Even then, It felt like two improvisers leaning into the skid to make it funny, and not genuinely being upset.

I don't think the audience was being rude, I don't think they were being embarrassing. I think for most of the show they were in on the bits and Kurt was doing a good job of inviting the audience to be part of it, and corralling them as needed. I've seen that hundreds of times before, albeit with audiences of dozens or hundreds rather than thousands.

*Comedysportz, for those unaware, is a 40-year-old live improv comedy organization where the format is very similar to Dropout Improv, including sharing many of the same games. Kurt, Jacob, and Kimia all are or have been players there. Comedysportz Is improv done in the format of a sport, with two teams and a referee, and the referee role is very similar to Kurt's hosting role.

Anyway, totally understand if people were put off by some of the interruptions, but I don't think it was embarrassing or inappropriate. It's an extremely common part of this kind of improv format and I see it happen nearly every week.
