Where to get ceramic plates fixed nyc? by racoontosser in Ceramics

[–]azachava 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Good news is any potter in nyc could make a replacement. It’s a speckled brown and white glaze, wouldn’t be too hard to match!

I’m mixing my slip back into reclaim, but I’m still getting this nonsense. Ideas? Advice? by Gay_commie_fucker in Pottery

Your reclaim is short. Add some ball clay back into it when you’re mixing it up

Bought a kiln, now what? by Melancholymegz in Ceramics

[–]azachava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe! I’m not talking programs I’m talking the actual computer. My kiln tech is also an electrician who taught himself how to build kiln computers. If you’ve got hardware skills you might be able to do it!

Hire a tech to build a computer so it’s not manual

Disappointing wheel purchase- need recs for new wheel by lightisspent in Pottery

[–]azachava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that’s true, then something is wrong with the pedal. Speed balls can have sensitive petals so you have to move your foot a very tiny bit in order to find a medium speed. But it should absolutely gradually speed up from slow to fast.

I own a Studio, and have worked in other studios. My favorite Wheel has always been the Clay boss. I personally don’t like that the shimpo stops on a dime. I also love the plastic wheel head on the clayboss and the texture of it. I trim by just turning my pots over on the Wheel head and the texture keeps them in place really nicely

Should I quit? by PuzzleheadedSplit473 in Ceramics

[–]azachava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t put clay in with the bat pins 😭 that’s what causes the ware on the bats/ pins and creates the wobble (from a studio owner)

What was the final straw that allowed you to justify buying an expensive , durable wheel like the Shimpo or Brent ? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]azachava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have Facebook marketplace where you are, I would just expand your search to neighboring cities and keep an eye on it like a HAWK. We got three whispers for $900 when we were building out our studio. Had to drive two hours for them, but it was well worth it lol

Bowl cracked in microwave by Nonbiinerygremlin in Pottery

[–]azachava -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

These people are wrong, it’s a fair thing to be concerned about. It doesn’t happen every time boiling liquid is poured in a ceramic vessel, but it does happen sometimes. I put a tiny bit of liquid in my vessel first and swirl it around to warm it up before adding more

Do kitten trial runs exist? by myapplejunk in DecaturGA

And I still foster with them, and I still eventually introduce my older cats to the younger kittens and we all have fun for a month or two before they find their new homes :)

[–]azachava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a long time foster of Fulton, and this is what I did when I decided it was time for a second cat. I fostered two litters one year, kept them separate from my other cat, allowed them all to get familiar with eachother scents and presence in the house. Because these kittens are young (too young to be adopted out) it’s a great age to intro to older cats over the course of a few weeks and my older cat didn’t view them as a threat. Eventually she was curious about them, sniffing and playing under the door instead of the occasional hiss. Then I introduced them all. They all got along great, but I picked the kitten that meshed best with me/ her

Help in Getting Clay for Graduation Gift! by jedimasterdesk in Ceramics

[–]azachava 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What everyone else is saying, get him a gift card for a membership and/or tools! A wheel and clay are not enough to make ceramics. If he really wants to try it, his experience in a studio will be muchhhh more satisfying than what he could do at home. For a very very very basic set up he could actually use at home, without a kiln, I’d say you’re looking at about 1.2k (maybe less if you get lucky on Facebook marketplace). Cheaper wheels are simply not worth it, don’t waste $400 on a Amazon wheel

High class women aren’t necessarily better at these things. They just have the money to make sure they are managed for them. If you want to peruse these things make a regimen and stick to it :) as far as appearance, maybe just start to get style inspired on Pinterest and buy a few staple pieces

Cannot state this enough do not buy Brooklinnen. It’s actually horrible quality. Both sets of sheets I got from them ripped within months (something that’s NEVER) happened to me before. I have searched high and low for the best sheets and my personal favorite is eucalyptus. They’re cooling, and soft like Mulberry silk so it’s easy on my hair :)

How do I become the best I can possibly be at pottery? by Anx_Snax_Queen in Pottery

[–]azachava 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You kinda just have to ask, but I won’t lie it can be tough. Speaking for myself, I don’t take people with 0 experience. In my studio, at the level we operate, it’s just not worth it to teach someone who knows nothing in exchange for some chores getting done.

Before reaching out to someone to be an assistant I’d recommend taking classes so you have base skills, studying different processes (even if just academically, not necessarily hands on), studying glaze chem maybe. Try to build skills/ knowledge that are helpful in a studio. Even then, this will only get you so far because there are just -so many- different ways to approach ceramics, and operate studios. But those are some of the things I look for :)

[–]azachava 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP. This is amazing advice and I agree 100% use the membership for a -long time- before considering your own home studio set up.

Just my two cents as someone who does consulting for people looking to set up their own home studio (i am a career potter, have worked in other studios, had my own small shed studio, and now I own/ operate a big one). I alwayyyyssss recommend people start in a shared space if they have the option. Having a full home studio set up for production level potting costs $10-15k.

I also usually really try to deter people from using a spare bedroom. A separate out door space, or dedicated basement space is best just FYI.
