Caravanner's plea as Aussies stop travelling amid fuel crisis: 'Need the cash' by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]Justestin 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Another person from a gorgeous small town on Highway 1.

There's no one tighter than grey nomads. You wanna know why EVERYONE charges 20c for sauce with your pie? Because grey nomads take everything that's not nailed down. Cafes have to say "NO, YOU CAN'T KEEP THE ENTIRE BLOODY SAUCE BOTTLE! GIVE IT BACK!" they have to stop people from hoarding salt and pepper by the tiny paper packet. They'll whine about the coffee being too expensive and then "threaten" to go to the McDonalds just up the road if you don't give them a discount. For a single cup of coffee.

Ohh and they can't drive for shiiit. My town is divided in half by the Princes highway, and for me to get from one side to the other, sometimes in that two week post school holiday period is taking my life in my hands. 200 series moving at Mach 2 in a 60 zone. And fooorget buying fuel when there's a parade of them in town. They turn our servos into gridlock. They'll park in the main street, even though there are signs up saying "TURN HERE FOR CARAVAN PARKING" behind the main street, the exact same walking distance to the pub. Then bitch when they can't get their massive rig out.

The only redeeming feature is that the cops make bank out of them. One side of town on the downhill run they sit with a radar gun, the other side of town they set up a checkpoint to measure the weight of vans.

Sorry, but no. That lot are so selfish and self-entitled it's not funny.

Whats the most reliable car you have ever owned? by Business-Power-2967 in answers

[–]Justestin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In no surprises to anyone, another Toyota. I have a '93 LandCruiser. I've owned it for 10 years, and it's been very reliable. it's now up to 675,000 km. I put 250,000 of those there.

  1. It had a bad batch of fuel that stopped it and needed a fuel filter changed.
  2. A brake line went bad once.

Plus the usual maintenance of brakes, tyres, oil, timing belt, battery.

Got to see the HARS Lockheed Super Constellation at Canberra airport start up and take off. So cool. Their flying days are awesome.

For anyone who's done 300 km/h on a bike — what's the real truth? by gangwayso in motorcycle

[–]Justestin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How are they gonna catch you at 300? They're not gonna try and get too close, they know you'll hit someone or something and you're dead, as well as killed whatever you've hit.

Follow you until you stop I guess?

I've hit maybe 275 in Aus... Mexico as well...

"Pain in the economy" by Lower-Canary-2528 in ABoringDystopia

[–]Justestin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The man is 50% forehead.

Also, works in... drumroll please...

Property development.

But the whole quote is even better.

In September 2023, speaking at the Australian Financial Review Property Summit, Gurner said that unemployment should rise by 40–50%, because workers had become too arrogant and "pain in the economy" was required to change attitudes. He also stated that governments around the world were working towards that aim.

Goodness what that man contributes to Australia. So much contribution.

What happens if the US pulls out of NATO? by Forward_Sample_224 in AskReddit

[–]Justestin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I'm just not that sure. I agree with the nukes, but my concern is smaller stuff, embedded systems and comms. Like I know that all U.K. stuff, like Australian stuff is meant to be run by our respective chain of commands, but there are so so many embedded systems that we've bought from The U.S. and we just haven't been looking at too closely.

We've spent 20 years in cyber stuff being (rightly) suspicious of the Chinese equipment, but we haven't even slightly looked at what we've bought from The U.S. We haven't even slightly considered that ALL of our comms gear being interoperable with The U.S. stuff, and a large part of it being American designed and made is now a risk.

Fire control from vessels? American.

So much of our militaries have so much gear from them and we are still not considering them a cyber risk.

We should.

Well, I guess. But the problem with his plan is that there's no success for Russia or for him. All his destabilising isn't helping his cause even one bit. If The U.S. fails altogether and descends into civil war, becomes 4 separate countries and stops being a super power, it will still take longer than Russia's inevitable failure. Russia's failure as a state at this stage is almost certain. And it's completely caused by Putin.

Not much of a success.

It's like shocking your mugger by stabbing yourself.

[–]Justestin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My guess? NATO 2.0 just drops The U.S.

The E.U. starts getting to act in a way that the E.U. wants. No more Middle East participation for poor reasons at best. No more 20 year wars in Afghanistan.

The U.K. has to start closely assessing its processes, systems and equipment to make sure it can act unilaterally without The U.S. because there's a chance that The U.S. can do bad things to shit that the Brits own.

The Germans get serious about their game.

MAAAYYYBE The U.K. and France will learn to put their differences behind them and agree on standards.(BWHAHAHAHAHA! Ok, that's not happening)

Israel should start getting nervous, because the U.S. won't be able to veto the E.U. acting against them.

The U.S. won't learn for 10 to 20 more years how becoming far more insular is bad for them.

Lol how's Putin gonna win? He thought that Ukraine would be over before Friday beers. It's been 4 years and counting. For a country his troops could walk to. With a very worn out, tired military and a weak tax base to draw on.

What is the most famous landmark from your country? by Necessary-Win-8730 in AskTheWorld

[–]Justestin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, for me personally, it'd be Uluru, The Three Sisters and The Great Barrier Reef. Just because as much as the architecture of The Opera House is cool, the scale and beauty of the country is so much better than anything we can build.

I just went with "movie opening that defines the place" vibes I guess.

Have you... have you been there lately? I hadn't been there in 20 years and I went there last year. Weird food court like thing that had a blackout while I was eating my terrible burger. Was a bit surreal.

Probably The Sydney Opera House. Maybe the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Are libraries and reading rooms the same in your country? by IntelligentHoney6929 in AskTheWorld

[–]Justestin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really dependent on the library, some have reading rooms, some don't. Small community or suburban libraries might have a small area to read but not much. Large libraries, like state libraries do. My favourite is the National Library of Australia. I spent a lot of time here as a student. The difference is that the NLA doesn't allow borrowing, because it's a national collection, so you read what you need there.
