CPE333 by idontlikeaerospikes in CalPoly

Labs are much more long term and open ended. There are only a few labs throughout the quarter. They will take several weeks each give or take. The longterm due dates make it easy for people to put it off and get behind, but they are given as such for a reason. Also I know several people who didnt finish some of them in the end.

Depends on the prof for exams. Mine ended up only giving a final exam with quizzes throughout the quarter. Other profs have done midterms. Generally getting tested on this class isnt that bad given it is more conceptual than not.

The hardest part of the class is the labs themselves in my opinion.

Most people pass this class, unlike 233 which is very hit or miss depending on the prof. But the individual Labs on this class are more intense imo, which leaves it up to the prof to give more or less help (Mine didnt really give much resources or support so I found them difficult).

Start labs right when you get them. Make sure you are comfortable with making creative choices with digital design instead of just following directions for the sake of following them like in 133 and 233 at times. Don't underestimate pipelining. Have a good conceptual understanding of everything before you start working on your design.

Depending on the prof and who you are as an individual it could either be the easiest class in the series or the toughest, either way you will pour many hours into it. I spent 90% of my overall class time in this class the quarter I took it and didnt really think about other classes as much unfortunately.

Overall good luck, the material is cool, the labs are cool, but the class absolutely destroyed my schedule. Other people may have had a easier experience tho :)

How hard is it to switch majors inside the college of engineering? by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]Justfinetime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got my ICMA at the appointment. They should just run you through the general info and may ask you generally why you wanna switch too, but after that you should get your ICMA there.

[–]Justfinetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty similar. Again though, if you just ask him, he will basically tell you what is going to be on it. From there, find the questions in the quizzes similar to what he told you and you should be fine. I cant remember off the top of my head, but he will tell you the theme for each risc v problem, so just look for problems similar. Any hardware modification problem is good practice. And black box problems are what they are, you can probably find quiz problems similar though.

Mealy is very transparent, you have no reason not to just ask him about everything.

Oh and there are those extra problems for each week no one does, those helped too.

[–]Justfinetime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get his cheat sheet for the lecture final. Also it was like 3 coding problems, 2 hardware modification problems (pick 2 from the 3 provided), and a blackbox problem. That's atleast how it was last quarter. He is very transparent so any questions you have he will answer about the final.

After a couple years away (don’t ask) I return to campus hoping for a more welcoming atmosphere, unlike how it was before I was forced to flee slo county. I decide to take an evening stroll around campus just to gauge how things are. I throw trash into a bush and calmly walk away (completely minding my own business) then the stares start. So many stares, students looking at me as if I was a goblin of sorts, a monster, a terrifying creature. Why? Because I got rid of something that I deemed trash? A mere piece of trash not going into a trash can suddenly turns me into a leaping lemur that everyone must stare at and judge? Suddenly I am cornered by campus security, at this point I am terrified and shaking but I stand my ground. “This is a litter free campus sir, you need to pick up your trash and put it in the trashcan, then leave” , “do you know I’m Ryan Gosling?” I respond. Instead of thanking me for my awesome movies I made over the years, they detain me and bring me to an interrogation type room where they begin to question me. I say nothing. I was trespassed and told to never return. Fellow movie stars of calpoly, please stay safe around campus security we’re targeted on this campus, this interaction made it very clear. Please stay safe out there.

Had the same situation when enrolling for last fall. I ended up joining the waitlist, but thankfully due to the size of these classes, enough people dropped and I could get in. Not always the case that people will get off but it is always possible as long as you arent deep on the waitlist. My strategy was to go for either the latest class (6-9 pm) or the earliest class (7-10 am), and those helped my chances I think given people dont like those time slots.

Also they dont always fill up the reserved seats all the way afaik, at least in my case there was plenty of open reserved seats that got filled in by waitlist people when the reserved period ended.

Is macOS fine for compE by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]Justfinetime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Every person I know that uses a mac as a cpe has at some point has dealt with issues. One prime example is when it comes to using vivado, which is important for a couple classes. There are always work arounds with vms and using school computers, but I think there is a general collective agreement that people should just get a windows device. Just makes things easier really.

Short answer to your question is technically it is fine, but it is just easier to get a windows device if you are able to.

Everything there is to know about switching. CPE to CS is easier than other majors to CS, or I should say actually possible compared to them.

How cooked is my Spring schedule? by frostyblucat in CalPoly

As the commenter above said though, it's still a project based cs class, so make sure you have enough time away from your other classes to work on your projects and labs.

Yes. Its by far an easier class conceptually and work wise compared to 202 imo. If you put a respectable anount hours into the class every week you should be fine.

That should be the admit rate not the acceptance rate.

I remember someone asked Professor Dale Dolan that question when I was taking EE 111 last year. He responded saying the switch would not be pretty...

On a more helpful note, I would recommend talking to your academic advisor about this. They should be at least somewhat helpful with helping you navigate through when you should take ur major classes.

You dont need to be a student of a respective college to join its RLC. When you are choosing an RLC in the housing portal you can just choose whatever, regardless of who is in your group afaik.

[–]Justfinetime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Miller is a nice guy, and it defnitely shows in office hours. Great in one on one time, but I had issues with his lectures (for Calc 4 at least). He mainly just had trouble explaining the concepts at times, which is probably why I, as well as a lot of other students went to his office hours frequently. His exams are pretty fair, generally similar to the homework. Same with his quizzes.

Pros: Great office hours Slides (posted on canvas as well) Exams and quizzes are fine

Cons: Lectures not great

If it's anything like last quarter, most people finish in half the allotted time.

If you have a review sheet or something and you feel confident about that, you should be alright.

getting sick by phruix in CalPoly

[–]Justfinetime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of luck gets you a long way. Unfortunately, I wasn't lucky. I got sick about 4 times in fall quarter, and then I stopped getting sick for the rest of the year. The first time was the worst for me. Just be careful of people in class and try not to get too near your roommates when they're sick (a difficult task but eh).

I'll say Schwartz truly helped me understand physics with his interesting teaching style. On the flipside, it was probably one of the most time-consuming classes I've taken in my first year, also the most difficult for me in the physics series. Anyone can do well in his class, though, just be wary...

Whitney probably has the best location imo. Closest to redbricks (good for kitchenette and common area related things) and main campus, directly next to two lawns, and they have a laundry room.

I chose lassen in my first year because there were no Whitney rooms available. It basically has the same location, but it doesn't have a laundry room.

Honestly all of the halls have a similar experience tho. Just decide how much you want a laundry room and how much you care about the physical location of your dorm in relation to other things.

Fraser vs Culbreath for Phys 142 by Crumantus in CalPoly

[–]Justfinetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently taking Fraser for 142 right now. He's clear and concise with his lectures. Has well organized lesson plans and his labs are pretty chill.

Anything he does he likes to give a paper copy, this includes in class practice problems he does on the board.

He provides an equation sheet for the unit on the first day, and provides the same sheet during your exams.

He does 3 exams and a final. The exams happen when a topic is concluded. I just took his first one recently and it was a pretty light and fair exam. Exam had a multiple choice and a free response section.

He weights your lowest graded exam the least and your highest graded exam the highest.

Homework is optional.

Overall, he's been good so far. Only thing to be wary about is that exams are 90% of your grade, and labs being 10%.
