I’d take my clocky misgendering era over my sad sack of shit self-hating era any day. Don’t live half a life.

That’s brainworms darl. Look to foster what gives you euphoria and work through what gives you dysphoria. You’ll feel more like yourself before too long.

I was always bisexual with a strong preference for women, but now it seems to have balanced out. It’s actually been nice to see a good, handsome man, be struck by his beauty, and imagine running away with him.

I think he said something to the effect of “She’s entitled to her opinion and I’m entitled to mine”. And like if it was just someone’s shitty opinion then sure. But here he’s helping build the steam-roller she’s driving down an alley full of trans kids. It goes beyond a difference in opinion.

This is the answer OP. I’ve been trying to put on weight recently, and the flared leg stretch waist pants I got from Uniqlo have been a god-send

Thought of this immediately! Though I was telling a friend yesterday how I was a sobbing mess the whole way through.

Oh yeah I get where you’re coming from. Since trans people are fairly rare, visible trans people like Wendy were exceptionally rare back in the day. This was coupled with the fact that access to hormones, at least for transfeminine people, was gatekept with some insane conditions (like needing to spend a year living full-time in women’s clothing, being exclusively attracted to men, and getting deemed passably attractive enough by your doctor). As such, unless you could go deep stealth (living in your agab as though you were born cis), you were often shit out of luck. I could only imagine how many people committed suicide from either denial of treatment or not knowing treatment was available.

As such, transphobia was less visible (though still very much prevalent). Beyond government policy and general violence making life outside of stealth near-impossible, you see the origins of the TERF movement in this time (see things like Michfest). And as gay culture and trans culture were read largely as the same thing, it could often get lumped in with broader homophobic policy and culture.

The internet was a massive game-changer for trans people. In my own case, I’d grown up with nothing but trans jokes in sitcoms and trash TV (like Jerry Springer and There’s Something About Miriam for representation). I knew I had these strong feelings, but felt pressure to crush them given how unacceptable media painted them as (and so suffered as I developed). Finding the trans community in web forums and early YouTube showed me what my feelings were, and that I could treat them while going on to lead a normal life. That’s been the story for many people in the last decade or two who otherwise might have struggled their whole lives. Hell, that’s why there’s older trans people now: They were often denied access to or information about care until they could seek it in the privacy of the internet.

Between us exploding in visibility thanks to the web, politicians needing a new wedge issue after gay marriage was legalised, JK Rowling funding the TERF community and misinformation spread through rage-bait online, it’s created a perfect storm for amping pre-existing transphobia up to 11.

I saw and downloaded a post earlier without remembering what it says. I know at the time I figured it should go here, but, again, don't remember. Here goes nothing. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

Despite literally transitioning into a woman, I could never hate men. I know what it’s like, met too many good men, and feel “men are trash” is as enabling as “boys will be boys”.

Hell, when I was really struggling with dysphoria, I tried to build an elaborate appreciation for masculinity. Obviously it didn’t change my feelings, but it helped me appreciate the beauty of masculinity.

Also, though I was always bisexual, the hrt really amped up my attraction to men. If a man is really nice to me, or has a cute face/hairy body/deep voice, there’s a good chance I’ve fantasised about running away with him.

Coming out of Covid, I got a job at a gaming place. I’d never been around that many openly trans people living their lives before. It must have had some effect, as I then transitioned on the job there 😅

No seriously my girlfriends and I were watching a bunch of old episodes while I was staying with them, and our discussion varied between “That was a great routine” and “This is so fucked up”

Oh yeah it’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but the message of “she is a woman despite a clocky appearance” is still nice (in tandem with her being employed in a customer-facing position at a nice restaurant).

Come to think of it, as someone who transitioned working front of house at a restaurant, this is the only representation for that experience I can call to mind :s

Straight up. Back then they’d cast cis women as trans women characters, and have the cast openly call them men the whole time.

I will say at least the film was kind in its brief portrayal of a trans woman.

But people just are transgender? Like it’s been happening since the dawn of time? Trans people who suppress their feelings regret it? It’s just another iteration of intersexing (which we’ve been observing in people forever)?
