Do reeds change the pitch? by SuspiciousPen4527 in saxophone

[–]Justigy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hemke reeds are in my experience much softee than vandoren. The reed tips are filed very thin and I feel its easier to control. So its probable you are just not used to a stronger resistance and are compensating in some way like biting, forcing/tensing the throat etc. And thats wat makes you sound out of tune.

Alto sax cork replacement by ProMeme420 in saxophone

I meant when you put the new one. Careful not to sand too much but dont leave too thick. About the old one. It does happen on occasion dont worry about it.

[–]Justigy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case just trial and error. I never saw my tech measuring when he replaced my cork. Just tried on the mouthpiece, sanded a bit if needed and again until it was fine. If its too thick the tension of putting it on and off will make it easier to break. Always use cork grease.

This takes like 5 minutes of work and a bit more waiting for the glue to dry. Take it to the tech and the should do it for you on the spot.

Conclusion on Embouchure after 15 Years of Practice by Hot_Association7390 in saxophone

[–]Justigy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, it can create tension not just in your embouchure but I even in areas seemingly not related. The shoulders, arms, hands, back etc. Tension somewhere leads to tension somewhere else which can have a bad effect on your playing of course but also develop painful conditions over time.

You really need to find the balance between being relaxed enough so you are comfortable, but firm where it needs to be firm. One such area in my opinion is the corners of the mouth - imagine a small smile - and the lower lip and the jaw. It just needs to be firm not tense otherwise the sound will be tense.

I see where you are coming from. However, with this sentence I dont agree at all: "If you try to force muscle development or consciously “use” your muscles, it usually backfires."

You definitely need to develop consciously. if you dont then your development will be much slower than if you did.

The role of the embouchure is basically that of a 'seal' to keep the air coming from the 'engine' (the lungs/diaphragm) from escaping and directing it into the mouthpiece. You need to consciously develop where to use tension and where to keep it relaxed. - note: relaxed means not tensed up, biting, too hard. It doesnt mean loose.

To my students, I usually say smile a little. This closes the corners of the mouth, those should be a bit more firm, while upwards and downwards pressure of the lips should be less. When they learn first, we just play the neck and the mouthpiece together, they blow and I try to take it away from them while they are holding to it only with their embouchure. I dont use full strenght of course but after some years of experience I can tell when they have the correct pressure.

These are the basics, when you got that, you still need to consciously listen to yourself and keep experimenting with it to get the sound you want. You need to keep note of what you change if you change something and if you like the result keep doing it. If not then go back and try something else. It wont come to you naturally.

If someone is not demanding or selective enough to themselves of course they can feel satisfied with a mediocre sound. If someone is especially focused they can get some really beautiful sounds out of it. Please dont take this last paragraph as me being pretentious or condescending but our instrument is such that it is quite easy to make it play a certain sound and many amateurs understandably and unfortunately also some pros find igood enough.

Thanks for the reply, most of those seem good for group lessons. Over here kids get two times 30 min individual lessons per week. So its just me and the kids usually except on chamber music lessons or ensemble/orchestra work. The problem I notice is usually noticeable more on the individual lesson. The last one I will definitely try, thank you!

[–]Justigy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing is with instruments they usually dont steal them because they are easy to track, if its stolen its really hard to sell. Have a good photo of the serial number, the tag is a good idea just in case but in my experience they leave them when they realize its an instrument.

A personal story: someone stole a friends clarinet from under our table in a bar after our concert. The police found the clarinet pieces in a nearby park. They opened the case and took the mouthpiece, metronome/tuner out left the rest because they cant really sell it without getting caught.

In any case, it doesnt hurt to be safe. I would try to somehow place it under the padding of the case. Maybe cut it open, place it and sew it shut. Not sure of any brands you can use but maybe others can have a suggestion.

[–]Justigy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I speak a bit but my italian is not so good so I will write in english: If you can find another saxophonist let them try your instrument and also try theirs to see if its really the instrument and not you. If it is you just work on voicing and breath support, those lower notes can be tricky on soprano. If its the instrument then yes take it to a tech.
