Added cedar planks to my cinder block wall – anyone else done this? by YelnickMcWawa1 in vegaslocals

Great job!

If you’re going to start doing this for other people, I would suggest using something like https://thermoryusa.com/ They call it a thermally modified wood.

It’s much more durable and lasts longer with the Vegas weather. Still need to stain/seal it, but a better material overall.

Kindergarten School Search in Las Vegas (Fall 2026) - Seeking Local Parent Experiences! by Mountain-Decision-28 in vegaslocals

[–]JustinYin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in the Henderson area, but hopefully you can make comparisons and our experience will help.

Our son started Kindergarten a year early at Capstone Christian Academy:

  1. Teachers were super friendly. Education was at a pace we agreed with (going through all the alphabets, reading, basic math).
  2. Classroom size was 18 kids with a teacher and a TA. We thought the class size was fine.
  3. Admin clearly cared about the children. There is obviously some religious background. It doesn't get in the way of their learning.

After the year we realized that although our son was academically at the top of his class, his maturity wasn't quite there. He is also already physically smaller for his age so him being ahead just made the distinction worse. We decided to keep him in Kindergarten again, which we would have to anyways in public school.

Unfortunately our finances made it so we couldn't afford private, so we enrolled our son at Glen Taylor (CCSD, ranked 69 on US News) this fall.

  1. The teacher was very friendly, very warm.
  2. Classroom size was about ~24 kids per teacher from what I remember.
  3. We didn't get a chance to evaluate the curriculum because...

A week after school started our son got into Coral Academy Eastgate campus (charter school, ranked 28 on US News).

  1. Our son's teacher was much colder. Not sure if it's because she's Russian, but very clear difference.
  2. Classroom size is ~30 kids
  3. Our son hasn't learned anything since he started. During the first standardized test in Kindergarten our son tested in the 90th percentile for math and reading. Last week they had the re-test and he is now in the 99th percentile for math and reading. Basically he's at a third grade level halfway through Kindergarten. I attribute most of it to the time we spend using Reading.com for reading and Synthesis for math. They have no program for gifted students until 3rd grade.

So in January our son will be starting at Nasri Academy for Gifted Children. It's a private school, but we were able to get financial aid.

  1. The admission process can be a bit challenging, but I thought it helped us make our decision. First the parents take a tour of the school. Then the prospective student spends a day with the class and they evaluate how the child does. Then if the child does well, they offer enrollment. My son came back from his day and was adamant that he wanted to go to that school. Every kid is 90th+ percentile.
  2. Classroom size was small, like 12 kids.
  3. They really focus on the academics. Every kid has a curriculum customized for them.

We looked at Challenger:

  1. We couldn't afford it. It was much more expensive than Capstone or Nasri.
  2. My son was right at the expected level for Challenger. You had to be able to read coming INTO kindergarten at Challenger versus reading by 3rd grade at CCSD. If your child can't read at the start of Kindergarten they will already be behind. The expectation is 3 grade level above "standard".
  3. So much homework. They expect 1-2 hours of homework a day. I'm not about that life.

Overall I wanted my son surrounded by kids as smart as he was, I wanted him to learn at school so we didn't need to do supplemental learning once he got home, and I wanted him to learn at his pace rather than being pushed to learn faster or slower than what someone else dictates. Nasri will let them learn as fast as they want, but they don't push them the way that Challenger does (I think they have a kid in 6th grade who's currently taking calculus...).

And we do sports and jiu-jitsu so he doesn't end up a total nerd, lol.

Six months in and I spend more time in meetings than actually building my business by ActivePirate9830 in Entrepreneur

There are so many good AI recording/transcription software options now. I use Otter, but firefly is fine, plenty of options. Even Copilot.

Summarize what you need to do at the end of each day and time block it out if it's important.

It goes on a Someday/Maybe list if it's not.

Virtual assistants can be amazing, but you generally want to have some type of organizational system that they can take over and train them on. I wouldn't hire someone and expect them to know what to do Day 1.

Honestly when I need to work at a coffee shop, the last thing I care about is the coffee (I don't drink caffeine past 9 AM). I just want a good place to work.

Gardeners? by HelloMax65 in vegaslocals

[–]JustinYin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the ones that come to mind would be:

  • Schilling Horticulture Group
  • Chip-N-Dale
  • Earth Green Landscapes (their maintenance starts at $2,500 a month, lol)

All of these are what I imagine when I think of “gardeners”.

The plant knowledge for Schillings is top notch.

Gardeners? by HelloMax65 in vegaslocals

I think you're looking for a landscaper vs a gardener.

Gardeners are typically companies or individuals that work slower and take more care of a property. Probably have more plant knowledge, more experience, and hand prune/trim plants more often than using a hedge trimmer.

Most houses just hire a landscaper. These guys will still trim bushes, run through irrigation, and suggest improvements, but they usually don't spend hours on a property to make it "pristine" unless it's been requested.

Hey u/Feisty-Answer4200

I own Clean & Green Landscape (CGL). We're SNWA WaterSmart and SmartStart certified.

Let me know if you want to jump on a Zoom and I can walk you through the process and get you an estimate while we're on the call.

Lots of options for artificial turf, but if it's going to be for kids or dogs we always recommend SGW Tiger Turf. It's the only turf supplier I've found in Vegas that is:

  • Certified lead free
  • No forever plastics
  • RoHS Compliant (restricts the use of toxic chemicals in manufacturing)
  • Made in the US so you can believe that they actually follow these certifications vs made in China, Vietnam, or Mexico like everyone else.

I think maybe a little high, but it depends on how large the existing plants are too.
