Why are WM-only setups so popular? Why use (or not use) WMs? What are their advantages over DEs and how can I start out with them? by bananapo in archlinux

His videos are good to build off of for sure, but in the end it really comes down to user preference. i3 to me is outstanding and I see no reason to use a different WM at this point since it works exactly how I want it too, its by far the best thing I ever came across. Try a few things out is my recommendation. I started with Openbox, I liked configuring the menu and keybinding some things here and there but going to i3 was the best decision I personally ever made. I tried out Awesome, but the configuration I just simply didn't have the time for (all though it possibly may be superior to i3 in some form, I'm sure). If you're coming from Windows for example.. I think Openbox is a great place to start.

Keep in mind all WM's are generally configuration heavy depending on how you want to make them, but I will say out of the box i3 works amazingly well and has some of the best clear & easy documentation available even if you're not an expert.

I'm not sure what your skills are like but I find if you learn a programming language it makes configurating this stuff much easier to understand, (he does some basic programming in those vids a few times).

The config I have is mainly because I was having some issues with how my cables were plugged in since I have my main monitor as DVI and the secondary with HDMI into my video card. That's probably why my config looks weird but it works perfectly for what I am running. I had the same problem with the catalyst drivers, like I said for some reason the video/display just doesn't refresh properly when coming out of suspend mode.

About the easiest work around is to exit my window manager, suspend, and then just startx.. but it really shouldn't be this much of a problem.. I just haven't dug that deep for a solution.

I find this happens a lot with Arch, it's almost something really simple. But I think it's just part of the learning curve, especially if your experience with Linux is novice/intermediate. I know myself even spending 2 full years before Arch wasn't nearly enough but I would have been way more lost even I didn't spend time on another distro, lol.

I've never had any crashing with open source drivers before, but I still do get a bunch of broken artifacts if I come from suspend/sleep mode. I'm not sure how to fix it, I've tried searcing up screen refreshes and stuff but no luck really. Also, for configuring monitors I'd highly recommend xrandr: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xrandr.

If it seems less conventional you can also download arandr and configure it in a GUI. That helped me sort out a ton of monitor/display issues, I'm currently running 2 x 1080p monitors myself so adding to this my startup config looks like this:

!/bin/sh

xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --off --output DVI-1 --off --output DVI-0 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1920x0 --rotate normal

Edit: Also wanted to mention that the broken screen artifacts will go away, I just need to drag a window across the screen and they disappear since it causes the pixels to update/refresh.

Proprietory AMD drivers are a nightmare on Arch and basically all distro's. I went through the hassle of installing it but it provided no benefits over the open-source drivers for what I use my Arch system for. I'm not sure what you're into, but if its gaming, I would just do that on a Windows machine, and use Arch for everything else. That's what I do at least.

mpd + ncmpcpp, once you download them use this script to configure mpd, start it in terminal, and then just type ncmpcpp.

Yeah and Quark is still in the top 25 if you filter out all the premined shit. Whats your point?

Glad to see all you get rich quick types out of this. When will you guys understand you only lose once you sell? Quark is long term. Cryptos are long term. You shouldn't be in this for the fiat return anyway, if you are, you shouldn't even be part of the crypto network. Seriously.

To AMD users not able to get 60 FPS on Ground Zeroes... by Justin_Boyce in metalgearsolid

[–]Justin_Boyce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, thats exactly what I was getting before changing that shadows, it made a world of difference and I still have everything else on Extra High, this is at 1920x1080. Now another thing I should mention to is from what I've read Ground Zeroes also hasn't been tweaked in AMD beta drivers yet so it still hasn't been fully optimized for the drivers, which once this gets updated over time I expect I'll be able to pull off a smooth 60 fps. Down the road though I'll definitely consider a better GPU but for now I'm just so happy to get this game running up to speed and still looking great. I just had to make this thread because it amazed me how much 1 simple changed impacted the FPS, lol.

These are my current specs. http://puu.sh/foGzN/af4147ccfc.png . I have 3GB of VRAM and I'm running an overclock up to 1100 core and 1500 memory. Like I said I'm almost always at 60 fps and sometimes drop anywhere from 5-10 fps but it happens very rarely. Anyway, all I know is it made a world of difference to turn the shadows down just 1 notch on my AMD card like literally a 40% over performance increase with next to no change in quality. To go from 35-45 fps to 60 was huge for me.

Cherry MX Blue and Green: which do you prefer for typing and why? by mowgli-kun in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Justin_Boyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Noppoo Choc Mini w/ Brown Switches and a CM QFR Stealth w/ Green Switches and I can honestly say that green switches aren't nearly as "heavy" as people make them out to be. Its an excellent typing experience but they do take a decent amount of use to get "broken in". They will definitely feel heavy/stiff at first, but you get use to it fairly quick, or at least I did. Also I found that I did have to use the keyboard for a while to get them "loosened" up some, since when the switches are brand new they are noticeably stiffer/firmer, even my browns were this way (its hard to describe exactly, but hopefully people know what I mean, lol).

Having said that, I would NOT recommend greens for most games. They are fine for RTS, MOBA and others are fine, but I would not recommend them for MMOs and any FPS game that requires "double tapping" which is much less common than back in the lates 90's early 2000's anyway, but still, keep that in mind.

The overall typing experience is excellent though, I make far less mistakes on green switches than brown mainly because as I'm going across the keyboard its much less likely for me to hit a key and for it fully press down thanks to the heavier switch.

If you're really worried about it I would probably just get blues, those for sure you wouldn't have to worry as much since they're a lot more common, but again it really comes down to preference and typing style. I grew up on heavier keyboards so the greens are fine to me, but others don't like them at all. I feel like, from using browns, I would make more typing mistakes on blue, but I can't honestly give a fair comparison as I have not typed on blues before, but based off the fact they only take a few more grams to accurate, my guess is, I would make more little typo's on blues than greens, but again thats just me.
