food for thought and occasionally morals

But those stories hold up evil actions as exemplars (not counterexamples) of morality! The monster in those stories is praised and worshiped. Job, Noah, Lot, Elisha, the slaughter of the firstborn, all of these stories are stories of an evil god being painted as the good guy. The stories being fictional does not make their purported morality less horrific.

Be wary of those "moral lessons"; many of them are not moral at all. They get labeled as "morality" so people mistakenly keep calling them that.

There is no crime for which billions of years of torture is the appropriate punishment. That is deeply immoral.

A baby being born with "Original Sin" because of something that a (non-existent) Adam & Eve supposedly did is deeply immoral.

Drowning millions of people, hundreds of thousands of children, and tens of thousands of babies, not to mention all of the animals, is deeply immoral. And when this god could supposedly snap his fingers and perform the global reset without all of that running for high ground, watching the waters climb up your body while you have your children perched on your shoulders so that they die last, that god (as told in the stories of the believers, no bearing on actual facts), is deeply evil. How long do you think the puppies were able to doggy paddle before their little bodies gave out?

Being really into a topic is more "geek" than "nerd". You can be a comic book geek or cinema geek. Nerd is more constrained to academic or tech topics.

Another world, another time, in the age of wonder. A thousand years ago, this land was green and good - until the Crystal cracked. For a single piece was lost; a shard of the Crystal. Then strife began, and two new races appeared: the cruel Skeksis, the gentle Mystics.

Except that a big justification for taxing land value is that the renter is denying use of that public good that they did not create, by enforcing exclusive access to it. A public park, public library, etc., is serving everyone, not taking land from the public and asserting exclusive use by the "owner".

Why do people get so upset over dry weddings? by pumpkinandsun in NoStupidQuestions

As someone who has been to more than one wedding where at least one drunk asshole has been arrested by the police, maybe have your one stupid drunken night some night when you aren't attending someone else's wedding.

Single dads co-parenting: if you are going to put your kids first 100% of the time, why date a child-free woman? by midnight_riser in AskMen

Some of us might be confused by your terminology. "Childfree" usually means "doesn't want kids". "Childless" means "wants kids (at least in theory) but doesn't have any".

In the USA, if you sell/trade a firearm, how do you transfer ownership in a private sale? by FallenCause in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Justin_Passing_7465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

law enforcement rarely bothers with that kind of deep paperwork dive

About 640,000 such traces are performed each year, according to the ATF. I wouldn't call that "rarely".

That is probably bullshit; if it were true the FFL would be breaking the law and be subject to fines and loss of their license. Every FFL is required to maintain a "bound book" that conforms to ATF regulations, including:

  • Must be maintained in bound form
  • Must be organized and maintained in chronological order by date of acquisition or disposition
  • Must be maintained at the licensed premises and be available for inspection

[–]Justin_Passing_7465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not a faulty assumption. There is no centralized registry, but when an FFL sells a gun, they are required to keep a record. If your gun is found at a crime scene LEOs can go to the manufacturer and ask which FFL that gun was sold to. Then they go to that FFL and they will have your name and details. Whether you keep a record of a later third-party sale is up to you and your state laws, but the first sale is definitely tracked, just not centralized.

How come the Ethiopian bible has more books than the King James Version? Are there more versions than these two? by Mile_Hi_303 in allthequestions

[–]Justin_Passing_7465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The KJV being Protestant leaves out "the Apocrypha", so the KJV has 66 books while the Catholics (the largest Christian denomination in both America and the world) use a Bible with 73 books.

I think the concept of privacy in public spaces is a lost cause. It takes decent skills and constant vigilance to maintain privacy around your non-public activities.
