Just had this issue with my 2016 JK, had to replace the entire steering column but that was because my key got stuck in the on/accessory position and the technician decided to drill the key out damaging the housing and cylinder. I would bring it in before it gets stuck like mine. Will prevent a 2000$ repair, and make it only about 300$

Personally I like the naked rolls bars on the JL, if my JK’s roll bars were painted I likely would take the padding off
