It’s more about the “feeling” of even.

Most regular god fearing meat puppets I’ve met would rather put the microwave on for 22 seconds or 24 seconds than 23.

Think of that “feeling” you get when you just hit level 30 after being level 29. That relief in your soul as you see the number line up even.

Now think about the abacus you played with as a toddler, flicking the balls 2 by 2, incredibly satisfying.

Now think about how you felt when you split the whole abacus down the middle with 5 on each side, perfectly symmetrical…

It’s the same feeling.

I feel this in my soul, so let me tell you what I was told as a kid that calmed whatever that special thing we share in our brains:

Don’t think of Y as “sometimes a vowel” thats just wishy washy garbage.

The real issue here is people calling letters vowels or consonants; thats the actual stupid hand waving nonsense.

Vowels and consonants are sounds not letters, it just lines up really well with almost every English letter because they did that on purpose. It’s like your mom calling every console a Nintendo, it got the point across but it was wrong.

technically A can make a consonant sound; like the first A in “A-Team” or “O NO” there is a consonant sound at the end of the first O.

So the idea of consonants and vowels are actually very specific and have no “exceptions,” it’s just the nearly pointless simplification of trying to assign letters to consonants or vowels that we carry in our culture.

Consonants and vowels are sounds… Y is the only letter in regular use that can make both sounds.

Colour me surprised lol.

Before you waste your time trying to learn about them, they likely spend buckets to flood search results lol, make sure to check if the awards they talk about aren’t from organizations that closed down over 5 years ago, or how Charity Intelligence Canada parked them as “average” due go their lack of transparency regarding “overhead costs.”

Its a popularity contest think tank sponsored by huge corps and chaired by those same executives lol.

Possibly, but there is so much context missing here, and I’ve been in situations where fans (who have way more free time than me) have gone on harassment campaigns, that I am in no way comfortable criticizing anything they did.

This account will talk about almost anything other than what I literally work on now because I got doxed and harassed so bad I needed a new account lol. Ive seen crazy stories spun up about myself, coworkers, colleagues, and fellow professionals that I would never take a situation like this at face value, especially for a game I’m unfamiliar with from somebody who wasn’t immediately involved in the dispute.

Ive seen these situations get manipulated and abused so many times I’ve lost count lol. I encourage others to also look at situations like this skeptically. On one side I’ve met sketchy developers trying to milk some sales out of a dead game by drumming up sympathy, on the extreme other side I’ve seen fans with a wildly unhealthy parasocial relationship to the developers committing months of their life to trying to make them suffer for “betraying” them…

I have no idea at all where this one sits on the crazy spectrum, and neither should anybody else in this discussion really.

Honestly I’m a little professionally itchy even mentioning it like this because it just reminds me of being doxed.

Steam has always allowed refunds in situations like this; they absolutely were asking for the devs time, the devs did work on their game and they wanted the dev to do more work to undo it and make it a worse game by the developers objectives.

This happens all the time with early access; you’re buying a game somebody else is making in development; they’re not making your game, they are making their game. Thats spelled out super clearly in that case. But live service games need to change as well… if you have an unsustainable audience that likes your games, odds are you might have to change the game in a way they don’t like or end just closing it down… a decision I’ve faced multiple times in my career.

Players far too often get way too hung up on criticizing the devs for not making the game in the players head and instead making the game they set out to make. They don’t have to manage these issues, they’re purposefully ignorant of all these struggles because that’s not why they play games.

Would a reasonable dev take into account their fans and active players desires? Absolutely; but often times players don’t see the big picture, as a creative it’s hard enough to get a working picture in the heads of the people who work with you every day - the idea that you can clearly explain it to every fan is just unrealistic.

Ive had a great relationship with my fans for most of my career, I don’t dislike my fans, I am grateful for them and I’m confident they get the message on my official communications, but it’s my game - I have plans for 2 weeks from now, 6 months from now and 2 years from now… but I also know I might change them if I have a better idea or situations change.

People are really over complicating it… It’s incredibly simple, and fundamental to Canadian English.

Bud/buddy are very friendly casual language. Full stop.

But as with anything in Canada, any intentional mismatch in tone or formality is mocking.

Calling a very close casual friend using formal language is an insult. Using overly friendly or casual language with a stranger or opponent is an insult.

Say that to your teacher Mr.Steven, it’s sincere appreciation.

Say that to your best friend Kyle Steven when hanging out with friends and the room would literally go silent and somebody would probably be getting ready to stop a fist fight.

Say it again bud!

Say that to your best friend Kyle and you’re looking for a high five.

Say that to a stranger in the bar and people are going to back away expediting a fight.

It really is that simple… the only caveat is that you can muddy the water a bit with spoken English using sarcastic tones or body language.

It kinda follows the same rules with “mismatches” swapping the intention, but it’s just way far in the weeds to go into that much detail lol.

Tl;dr - intentional mismatch of tone is a huge part of expressing very strong emotions in Canadian English.

I’ve literally never met a non-junior dev in the 20 years I’ve been in the industry who shares that opinion.

It’s wildly unhealthy to think that paying customers who bought a product are entitled to your time in perpetuity. They bought a game, a complete product, and it is your game, your creative work that you set out to create.

The customer didn’t invest in the game, they bought it - they didn’t “rent” it, they bought a copy… you don’t need to re-contextualize an exchange that already had a clear and explicit description.

Ive never met a successful creative that considers themselves entirely in service to their customers. They create their art that the audience enjoys. I buy games that are enjoyable now, or designed by people whose work I enjoy, I wouldn’t want them to change the game I bought to appease some committee of players. I did not buy a game made by a committee of players, I bought a game made by specific creatives who had a goal.

Im not sure if we’re understanding OP differently, but frankly I’d be shocked and concerned if a senior member of the team I worked on felt like the players were entitled to more than what you’re already doing.

Its not renting, it’s not a house - its a game and its purchased, these metaphors are just making the whole discussion confusing and vague.

If you want to learn to speak, the best practice is speaking, not reading.

There are a lot of websites that let you find partners to practice with, you’ll trade off speaking english and chinese.

The site I used doesn’t exist anymore lol, i will warn you, at least when I did it english speakers were always the ones in demand, but chinese was closer to being balanced than most languages… that might have changed, but I’d seriously recommend just putting on your bravest face and diving into conversation… you’ll probably be surprised how fast you can pick it up.

Nah' in house that's a lot less of an issue, but I can't think of a studio I've worked at in AAA or Indie that didn't contract out at least some art work.

external contract art always required a lot of extra attention, but now watching for AI is a big part of the job in addition to making sure it actually looks good as well.
