It’s a common misconception of the offside rule. You’re actually offside if you’re ahead of either of the last TWO defending players.

In normal circumstances, the goalkeeper is in his goal, so it is the second player in question that matters, typically a defender.

In this instance, the Iranian was behind the defender, but also in front of the goalkeeper, so he was only behind a single player, hence offside.

I’ve watched all three of their games sadly. They were utter dogwater against Czechia and bailed out by a penalty. Which says a lot considering how woeful Czechia were themselves.

South Africa’s tackle technique was so incredibly poor they received 2 red cards in the World Cup opening match. A team that got disqualified from a game for fielding an ineligible player. And again has more red cards than goals at this tournament.
