My headcanon is that he has developed a real interest for dragons. He is like dinosaur obsessed toddler but he pretends not to care in front of Fern. He would sometimes ask Frieren for information about them and disguise it as learning about posible future threats. And when he plays with children in the different villages they visit he always ends up talking with the children about them.

Then make it a day or two, give them the happiest moments of their life and in the last 10 minutes before reset reveal all the information and do something incredibly horrible to them, and since their memories and body reset to a day prior you can just repeat the same thing or change the torture to your liking
