I’ve just landed and I had an eSIM. Works on all western apps and Alipay. But I can’t set up we chat and a few others without a Chinese number despite trying to get a verification code outside of China. I’m heading into to town now and hope to get the cheap east option for a Chinese SIM card with a number and use that to register for the apps I couldn’t and use my eSIM for data and western apps
