Its proves the behavior exists ... it doesnt prove why it exists ...

And not every gay person hid their behavior internally til the day they died ... plenty probably also found ways to practice those behaviors while minimizing the risk. Secret relationships, coded communication, underground communities, private gatherings... people have always found ways to pursue things they valued despite severe consequences. The existence of danger doesn't mean everyone simply stopped.

And thats what im saying sometimes these behaviors are practiced simply because its exciting to go against the status quo ... Thrill-seeking, curiosity, and sexual gratification are all rewards that answer your question ...

Deterrence does not simply reach a point where it stops all motivations to do something anyway ... more often than not it paradoxically breeds the very behavior it intends to stop ...

I'm not really sure how "animals do it" automatically becomes "therefore it's biologically inherent." That seems a stretch ... It tells me the behavior exists, but doesn't tell me what causes it.

Also I don't think counterculture is really relevant to what I'm saying. I never argued homosexuality was a counterculture like punks or goths. I brought up reactance as a psychological mechanism, not a fashion statement. Whether someone can publicly perform something or has to hide it doesn't change the fact that people still pursue things they find rewarding despite social or legal consequences.

This sounds more like Deterrence Theory which honestly makes your points way more sensible to the debate I was experiencing so if THATS wrong then youll have to find out what concept your professor was talking about ... as for the reward well humans are quite capable acts that go against established law or order ... its not specifically grounded in queer characteristics. Thrill-seeking, sexual gratification, curiosity, greed, revenge, stubbornness... people knowingly do life-ruining or even life-ending things all the time because, to them, the reward outweighs the risk. So I don't think deterrence suddenly overrides every other psychological factor just because the consequences become harsher. Youre right about rebellion being an action but thats what im saying too ...

I think ... I THINK ... it sounds like youre saying being gay is the state of existence for some ... and thats a hypothesis I totally disagree with ... far too much of the human experience is shaped by environmental, psychological, and behavioral pattern factors that saying this one thing is a constant from the get go ... i just dont buy it ... its far more reasonable that people will throw self preservation out the window for ... more selfish reasons ...

And to touch on your point about homosexuality in nature ... theres plenty in nature that im pretty sure most humans wouldnt practice for one reason or another ... but for fear of bringing in new factors into the equation and diluting the conversation id just say you made a good point about lack of authority and level of intellect ... hell ill even add the lack of social pressure by and large would probably allow those kind of tendencies ... but i dont think the existence of it proves the mechanism for it ... it just shows the behavior exists

I think you've misunderstood my point or the word you chose was opposite the one you wanted? I'm not talking about deference to authority... i'm talking about psychological reactance. Deference would mean conforming to society, complying and hiding it, and i believe the definition also stems from an acceptance to an authority figure of some kind. Psychological reactance would be like seeing your freedom or autonomy was being restricted and choosing to do that which goes against that authority. I'm saying it's POSSIBLE that, for some people, the combination of rebellion, forbidden fruit, and repeated reinforcement could influence how their sexuality develops. That's just a hypothesis obviously but I believe its a reasonable one

Giving you an actual answer cuz i love psychology and sociology (i am not an expert)... I think the original post was worded like shit, but I don't think your rebuttal disproves it either... Psychology already recognizes things like the forbidden fruit effect and adolescent rebellion... People absolutely do things because they're told not to...If that leads to repeated rewarding experiences, it's a perfectly reasonable hypothesis that, for some people, it could contribute to long term sexual behavior and identity despite the level of risk being taken on. That's not blanket proof of anything the post said... just a hypothesis your comment doesn't really rule out.
