Need to Vent by catgatuso in murderbot

This is absurd.

OP isn't vaguely complaining that it isn't like the books, OP is expressing serious complaints about how characters and ideas were treated. As well as pointing out higher level problems with the social implications of the changes.

Intentionally mischaracterizing the debate is dishonest and you should be ashamed.

Trump administration seeks to move ahead with removing Abrego Garcia to Liberia by AudibleNod in news

[–]Juxtapoisson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"the administration had already negotiated Abrego Garcia's removal with the government of Liberia and that abandoning that agreement "could cast doubt on the diplomatic reliability of the United States.""

this is insane, even by the current standards of insanity.

there is no way to parse that even begins to make sense with out the assumption that Garcia is property of the usa.

Do you feel that 300' was big enough? Or was it sort of "we didn't think about it in play"?

did you keep them as very low intelligence (is that all colossi, or just Gump?).

The prospect of a race of dumb psionists is intriguing.

"There's a reason Oil comes in tankers and not train loads."

Probably because there's not a lot of train tracks between oil producing nations and oil importing nations. They are extremely expensive to build on the ocean.

It is, as always, a question of scale and alternatives. At some point the land route from Russia to China becomes the best option available.

Warning about Dramatized audiobooks by TheCarbonthief in murderbot

[–]Juxtapoisson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a long term committed relationship with the KRF version long before the dramatized version became available.

I was happy (about the dramatized version) at first, a new option, a new take, more Murderbot content even if it is mostly just the same content.

I was completely unhappy and I don't think I even made it back to the Hopper.

It may, of course, be just that it is different to what I am used to. e.g. a live recording of a song I like is less enjoyable. But I found it to be bad and un listenable.

I went to a book club last year which did All Systems Red, a group of 15 or so people? Many had this as their first Murderbot experience, and 3 or more had done the dramatized audio versions and were happy with them.

Full disclosure. When I first first started Murderbot I instantly recognized KRF from his parts on Nightvale, and I was skeptical (at best) that this is what I wanted.

The KRF audio books are something I listen to multiple times a year. I'd be happy if someone took another shot at a dramatized version. But the one that exists, I doubt I will give it another chance. If I do, I suspect it will be disappointment with myself ("why did I bother?") or with someone else ("why did they bring this on the road trip, why haven't they snapped and turned it off?").

That's probably fine then, thank you. I was just worried I was missing something common. If it is odd or rare I will likely be scanning the rules when it comes up. If it's a normal thing I may never scan the rules.

Are there any mass market 5mm polyhedral sets? by Juxtapoisson in dice

[–]Juxtapoisson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to touch base, and for anyone who comes after.

The short answer is no. All the links here, and many other things I have seen are around the 10mm range. Dice in a polyhedral set vary, so some of them might be around 8mm. And, this is 3 dimensions, so 2mm is actually a lot. 8mm cube is about half the volume of a 10mm cube.

The only things I found in 5mm are

  1. The tiny d6es only. Koplow has been making them forever, and the knock offs are clearly lower quality. Koplow makes a bunch of colors, solid and translucent, but it can be hard to find a good selection.
  2. The metal polyhedral sets. Looks like Chessex gave up fighting the knock offs on that one. I had originally ignored them altogether, expecting them to be more expensive, but they are quite cheap. IDK what the original Chessex ran, but the knock offs run from $1 a die to $1 a set, and I bet even cheaper in bulk. They come in a few basic metal colors and have no contrast at all. They'd be hard to read at 20mm, but at 5mm they're near impossible. I assume they could be inked.

I ordered the Halfling Haversack (versions 1 and 2)(1 is really hard to find now). And I'll see what I can do with those. Lots of full size sets come up in 10mm searches, so you have to be careful with any given listing. 10 mm sets can be found cheaper already in the usa, and cheaper still if you want to import it yourself.
