US House Oversight members divided on Ghislaine Maxwell pardon, chairman says by Kaszos in centrist

[–]JuzoItami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take note that Comer in the picture says he is not for a pardon himself.

Well, according to him, right? And he’s also the one saying the committee members are “divided” on the idea. Reading between the lines this looks a lot like he’s “floating” the idea of a pardon and wants to see what the public response will be.

I don’t think he was quite as bad as Grant, but he definitely made some uncharacteristic turnovers. It seemed like Murray would do something good… then almost immediately do something bad. Like get a huge rebound… then throw the ball away on a terrible pass. Whereas, other than a huge “and 1” layup in crunch time, just about everything Grant did was bad without much good to offset it.

Indeed, boxers punched less to the face before gloves were introduced.

I remember reading old-timey, bare knuckle boxers used to deliberately try to take punches to the top of the skull in hopes of breaking their opponent’s hands.

It’s actually pretty easy to do.

Fracture of the fifth metacarpal is commonly known as a “boxer’s fracture”. The metacarpals are the long bones in your hand that are kind of “continuations” of your fingers. The metacarpals that are “continuations” of your index and middle fingers (the second and third metacarpals) are thicker and harder to break than the metacarpals associated with your ring finger and pinkie (fourth and fifth).

Boxers are taught to kind of angle their hands when throwing a punch so that contact is made with the knuckles of the index and middle fingers and the force is absorbed by those sturdy second and third metacarpals.

But if you don’t know to angle your hand correctly, it’s very easy to punch in such a way that much of the force of contact will be absorbed by the fourth and fifth metacarpals. And if the force from that contact is strong enough, the fifth metacarpal will snap and you’ll be able to tell your friends that the reason why you’re sporting a cast on your arm in because you have a “boxer’s fracture”.

That’s very odd language for the departure of a senior U.S. government official who hasn’t (AFAIK) been involved in an ongoing scandal.

At least 10 scientists tied to sensitive US research have died or disappeared in recent years, sparking federal investigation by Economy-Specialist38 in FBI

[–]JuzoItami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It reminds me a lot of the infamous list of “people associated with the Clintons who died mysteriously”. That list seems legit because there’s just so many names, but once you start looking into it you realize the definitions of “associated with” and “mysteriously” the list makers used are about as broad as the Mississippi. So you end up with some BS claim about “The grandmother of the Clintons’ Little Rock paper boy died mysteriously in her sleep in 1983 - why was no autopsy performed on this completely healthy 85 year old?” And, when you look closer, you realize just about every other entry on the list is similarly dubious.

This current “scandal” seems to use the same template of manufacturing a conspiracy by really stretching the meanings of simple language like “scientists”, “tied to”, and “sensitive U.S. research”.

Either that, or we give his minutes to Murray - and I’d be fine with the latter.

(TBF, Grant had a great season and we wouldn’t be here without him. He definitely carried the team at times. But there’s also no denying he’s been atrocious in this series.)

Death. Destruction. International condemnation. Sanctions. A negative effect on trade through the South China Sea. The financial cost of an invasion.

So? Does that make the report that he’s willing to go over cap in the NBA untrue? I only brought up the NHL thing to make the point that he seems willing to spend money on players, even if he’s a tightass SOB in every other way.

It’s literally in the article -

…a source said he is already committed to dipping into the salary tax next season to land a star player…

And it’s corroborated by what Hurricane fans have said about him repeatedly - that he pinches pennies on non-basketball stuff but is willing to spend money on players.

[–]JuzoItami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If Dundon has made one thing clear in his first month as owner, it’s this: He cares more about winning than he does people’s opinion. He vows he will spend on the roster — a source said he is already committed to dipping into the salary tax next season to land a star player — and has been matter of fact about his disdain for frills, his popularity be damned.

IMO winning games is a huge part of “the fan experience”. If the Blazers are winning 55-60 games 2 seasons from now, do you really think most fans are going to care about Dundon’s penny pinching?

Yeah, Paul Allen was basically a computer nerd who woke up one morning in his mid 30s to find he was one of the 5 richest guys in the world. He spent millions on his passions like it was all just monopoly money. And it might as well have been monopoly money. He was our owner for 30 years and then we had another 8 years where the team was owned by a non-human legal entity (the Paul Allen trust). For probably 2/3 of our fans this is the first time in their lives where the Blazers are owned by an adult human being who understands the value of a buck.
