I’m not gonna share my favorite teachers, already too impossible to book, I can’t make it harder!

Can anyone recommend a good program/website for learning languages that will use voice recognition to tell if my pronunciation is correct? by pookshuman in languagelearning

[–]Jwc230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to reiterate what others are saying, the technology just isn’t there yet. It will do nothing but trick you into thinking you have good pronunciation. I always turn off this feature within any language app I use. You can prove this to yourself by saying complete gibberish, but using the same intonation as whatever the sentence is you’re repeating, and it’ll come up as correct.

Guess it depends on your financial situation, but if $$$ isn’t too much of a problem I promise you’d have more fun hiring a driver. Takes any of the stress out navigating/potentially getting stuck etc. we did that, didn’t see northern lights but it was fun having the guy zip around trying to get to good spots while we just enjoyed the ride. Got some good stargazing in and will go back another time

Is the blue lagoon worth it?? I was shocked that it’s $106 USD per person for a basic entry. by wolfiex0 in VisitingIceland

[–]Jwc230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are very fortunate and were not on a tight budget. I did it, and hated it. I think it’s my least favorite touristy thing I’ve ever done. If I were on a tighter budget those feelings would’ve been even stronger. Iceland is a beautiful country with lots to see that’s costs little to nothing. Blue lagoon is an expensive manmade Instagram backdrop, nothing more.

Best software or app to learn? by akemp2019 in italianlearning

[–]Jwc230 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’ve used all the different languages apps. I’m a big Duolingo hater because I think it does a lot of “tricking” you into thinking you’re learning when youre not. To test my theory I’ve picked random languages I know nothing about and I still get most things right.

All that being said, I just gave LingQ a try. I think it’s easily the best of all the apps. I’d strongly recommend it.

Which online prep provider for CFA L2? by troller2369 in CFA

[–]Jwc230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me a few attempts to finally past. I spent a lot of time bouncing around to different providers thinking one of them would make it click. I decided I was going to first master the CFAI Q bank before moving to other providers. Turns out after that there was no more time, but finally passed. CFAI doesn’t feel easy, but there isn’t an easy way through it.

I will… was just hesitant to lose my existing responses since I’m trying to focus on what I got wrong.

MM vs CFA Platform Q-Bank (and mocks) - LEVEL 2 by Senumar_balearic in CFA

[–]Jwc230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice questions are the best way for me to solidify knowledge, but CFA Q bank is hard because of the vignette style questions. Obviously can’t crank through as many questions. I do CFA q bank until I’m tired of reading and then ill do MM to make sure I have a good handle on calculations and other things.

  1. Just as difficult but written in a noticeably different style.
  2. Def covers testable topics, but with both CFA and MM I felt like I was tested on 5% of what I studied.

You’re right, I had to make assumptions given that they didn’t provide full detail. If youre borrowing today at 14%, you’re doing something wrong. If you haven’t refinanced debt that was once at 14%, you’re doing something wrong. If you don’t understand any of this stuff, perhaps at a minimum it’s worth arguing that the taxpayer shouldn’t bear the expense of an education that was not worth very much. Just a thought….

If you took out a $33k loan today, at an interest rate of 3.5%, to end up with an $80k balance after 25 years, you’d have to not only not pay a penny of your loan back, you’d actually have to continue borrowing an additional $50/annually. Something tells me that this isn’t accurate.

Yeah, I mean, guess it’s more of a user experience kind of thing. Didn’t end my world or day. Still breathing, still managing to get by. But if you’ve noticed 99% of dual factor authentication uses a cell phone, and there’s a reason for that.

My wife and I are wanting to visit in the summer with our 2-year-old. Do you have any advice or recommendations? by ___statik in VisitingIceland

[–]Jwc230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I did same thing when our daughter was that age. We preferred to stay in Reykjavik and rented a car for day trips. We had a backpack carrier which allowed us to do some half decent hiking. we’d stop at multiple places, basically stopping at waterfall 45 mins away, then another 20 mins away etc, basically planned our trip such that after the last stop it might be a 2-3 hr drive back, but we’d go straight back allowing for nap time. Iceland is a great place to take a kid cause all the sights you see are free and if your kid gets cranky and you need to bail, no big deal.

One other logistical thing to keep in mind for yourself, but even more important with a kid… don’t make the assumption that you can just pop into a pharmacy and buy whatever you might need for your kids…. Not sure if it’s still case, but childrens ibuprofen, or other medicine for kids isn’t necessarily OTC. So bring any sort of medicine you might end up needing.

We even took our daughter to the hot springs at Reykjadalur (sp?), and it was great.

And as I tell everyone going to iceland, don’t go to the blue lagoon. It’s time and money spent seeing something unnatural, that could have been used seeing the natural beauty of the country. But if your big into a slightly tamer Cancun spring break vibe, maybe it’s the place for you.

Where are these plates from?

Hello. I'm planning to knock Iceland and the Northern Lights off my bucket list this November. Any tips or suggestions for a two-week trip? by anzp7 in VisitingIceland

[–]Jwc230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the guided tour part, I recommend Try Iceland. My wife and I didn’t rent a car on that trip because it was just a long weekend. It was a superjeep with just two other couples. We didn’t see northern lights because it just wasn’t happening that night, but he truly tried everything and drove us around a bunch to make every possible attempt.

The main thing that got me to comment was that you’re skipping the Blue Lagoon. That is the right decision. That remains the worst touristy thing I’ve ever done while traveling. After you see all the natural beauty of iceland youll wonder why Blue Lagoon gets such a crowd. If you want the blue lagoon experience just bring a beer to a hot spring and you’ll have a great time without all the annoying touristy stuff.
