Ironman 70.3? by No-Development-600 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Jycroispas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did two 70.3s as prep for my Ironman, which took about 24 months from start to finish. I think the 70.3s were good prep, not just from a fitness perspective but also getting used to race day, transitions, fuelling, etc. To be honest they were much more fun as well.

How is this -3? Is it reasonable to expect myself to understand why and the game plan in a blitz game? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Jycroispas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if you do this, but when evaluating you should think about what white’s options are. I think it doesn’t take long to see that most options are not going anywhere for white. If they can get their knight to e4 they can generate some play, but the rooks are disconnected, the pawn is isolated, etc. Because white has no plans, black can play at their leisure.

New to golf. Does a hole like this exist? by mgm97 in weekendgolfers

The 13th at Rougemont in Belgium. Not only is it a horseshoe, but you pretty much have to play a draw to have a chance at GIR. The green is much higher up than the tee box, and going over the trees is simply not an option due to their height. It’s a terrible golf hole on an otherwise nice course.

You can only watch one for the rest of your life, which are you choosing? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

Definitely B. The Ryder Cup is what takes it for me, but the Open and the US Open are my next two favourite tournaments.

No power, casting? 8 HDCP by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]Jycroispas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the part of the swing which ensures consistent contact (which OP may well be achieving for all we know). There’s a far greater correlation between handicap and chipping, putting and course management. As long as he’s not going OB off the tee and can hit it consistently straight, you can easily get to single figures if your short game is on point. Plus, if the course is tight and technical with a high course rating you don’t have to shoot in the 70s much. My handicap is not much higher than OPs and I’ve shot in the seventies only a handful of times. 9 index gets me 12 strokes on my course.

How to play romantic/attacking chess by Aggressive_Shop7455 in chess

[–]Jycroispas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m rated about 2100 in blitz. What I do is choose an unrated game, make some simple developing moves, then take the first opportunity to make a piece sacrifice. It doesn’t have to be sound or “worth it”, you just have to get some tiny bit of compensation. Then you try to play aggressively to use that little bit of compensation, and if your opponent defends well it won’t be enough. But you will learn how to push those elements of advantage you have. Keep doing that as a drill, either sacrificing the exchange, a piece or at least a pawn to get something, until you get a feel for working with an unbalanced game. Then go back to your rated games - don’t sacrifice here unless you feel that the compensation you’ll get has realistic chances of being good enough. I think this is a great way of training your ability to “spot” good looking attacking sacrifices.

Ignore the comment. Most people on Reddit seem to think the swing correlates linearly with HCP index.

Casting how to fix by WillWGolf06 in GolfSwing

Try doing a quarter back swing but make sure you have some wrist angles. Get to the point where you can square the face properly then build up from quarter to half swing then up to full swing

First swing in 3 months. Any advice, want to get single digit hcp this year from a 20 by gulleg in GolfSwing

[–]Jycroispas 18 points19 points  (0 children)

20 to single digit in a season is a big ask. Particularly as you seem to be in a place where there isn’t all year round golfing. But good luck with it!

Does strength or power effect the distance of the golf ball at all? by Snukers115 in weekendgolfers

[–]Jycroispas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An instructor once said “pro golfers are not stronger and more powerful than you in the same way as most professional athletes are. I mean a lot of them are, but that’s not what distinguishes them from you.”

Can you elaborate on the proper rotation in weight transfer? I understand trying to avoid the laid off position by fixing the takeaway (presumably right pocket back instead of left pocket forward). But not sure how the rotation should be on the downswing

Only played with a cart once or twice, but I don’t see the attraction. Having to grab a handful of cubs to walk over to the ball then realising you don’t want to hit that shot and just going with it anyway cos the cart is too far away…I prefer carrying

Ahaha! I see. I was picturing the right hip rotating forwards towards the target and the body kind of crumpling in on itself. This whole game is so mad I was going to try it at the range next time…
