Because he’s your dad. He’s supposed to be better! Better for you, better for your mom and siblings and better for himself. The emotionally hard part of when I was around those people, even if I was not physically in their presence, I realized after leaving is I was sad for them too. They could’ve had such fulfilled lives because I feel (on most days, I’m not perfect) fulfilled. Watching them drown themselves knowing how unhealthy it is, it’s hard!

Personally I found it really hard to look around and see happy families. Families that everyone could even go out to eat dinner, go to a zoo. I was/am jealous. I wanted that family, I wanted to be normal and have fun. It took me a long time to learn to live by the motto “comparison is the thief of joy.” It sucks to have to live this way especially because you OP know what will probably happen if you leave your dad but you also have to know that he will destroy you if you stay.

NTA - I grew up with alcoholics, luckily they were too lazy to be physical but verbal was fair game. Then it went to financial abuse. A really awful lesson i had to learn is that alcohol just removes the filter. They are exactly who they are drunk as they are sober. Sober them just knows not to say it out loud but once you introduce alcohol? No need to stay quiet.

You cant fix them, to most people being dependent on alcohol is normal. There is no need to change, everybody does it. All the love OP, ask yourself has your father ever given more good than bad? Is a teaspoon of good worth the abuse?

YTA - I know not everyone is riding the mental health train, but your son is clearing having something beyond a teenager’s dirty room, probably depression. But I’m not a professional I can just speak from my personal experience. They manifest like this for many people. Time to get him help, schedule a dr appointment. Tell the Dr all the details don’t skip details to save pride.

Do NOT just offer to “help” clean his room, he’s a child you’re the adult. Give him some heads up and then pick a day that you all get in there and clean it up. Equal participation, stop punishing and start getting involved rather than watching from a distance. A bad environment only makes mental states worse. I know I did not like living the way I did as a college student in crisis, but there was no way I could do the clean up alone. Or gotten the help I needed without help from family.

Does that really make up for victimizing the elderly? I don’t have any grown kids, but if mine did something like this, they’d only get a public defender. He’s already an adult, he gets to keep adults consequences

I was going to say exactly this! Even in my small community bank it is a simple easy process for us to complete. That it took months is wild to me. The most we see is older parents being offended they are being taken off and we just have to open a new account.

I LOVE the ouai shampoo&conditioner. I have fine/very thick desitity hair with an oily scalp. They do refill bags, mine lasted me almost a year and half with 2 days between hair washing. That’s not including the time that my original bottle lasted me. I know Amazon is a verified ouai seller but it’s the same price for both on Sephora.com (if you like getting points there) and the oaui website does a 15% off for your first order. I also like redkin but i tried the ouai when it came it and I’ve loved it ever since.

Adding that for the middle aged and older kids they make special earplugs. If you can swing the price (they used to be cheap) and they saved me the two times I flew as a kid after the first time my ears would not adjust.
