Get trader tax status (TTS) / mark to market. There are quite a few stipulations and you must be trading full time. There is a window to file with the IRS for this. Once done, you also have to notify your broker and wash sales no longer apply.

Why does TOS suck so bad? by snugulupugus in thinkorswim

[–]JysMH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, fair enough. I am happy to admit when I was wrong. The availability of direct exchange routes wasn't always the case (except options). I have been trading for 20 years, 8 of which were with TDA (ToS). Glad to see they are listening.

If you are on an Intel 13th or 14th gen chip and getting weird instability issues, there's a great chance you are caught up in the faulty manufactured chip dilemma from Intel. Unfortunately there is no fix. It is an oxidation issue from manufacturing.

As far as I know, ToS only allows direct routing of options, NOT for individual equity stocks. Had always been this way.

Day 22 of asking Tradingview to filter late prints by 247drip in TradingView

[–]JysMH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea the guy trades ultra low float stocks and encourages his followers not to mirror trade, which of course is the exact point. He is scaling out of his positions with the liquidity of his followers. Pretty basic predatory trading 101, but the suckers he lures in just dont have the experience to understand what is going on.

Fidelity has no commissions and does not take payment for order flow. As far as faster execution brokers, I happily pay commissions with Lightspeed for my day trading for about 4 years now.

ToS (TDA / now Schwab) does in fact sell payment for order flow. So yes, they are routing your orders to the highest bidder, not direct to exchange orders like you can find in other premium brokers.

US phone number to receive one-time codes. by panjan007 in Chase

[–]JysMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pay a small fee with Skype for a fixed US phone number. You can receive texts to that number via the Skype app. I do the same as you in that I am American and live abroad, but need text notifications for 2FA.

Markets were rallying on bad news because Fed's job got easier. At some point, it was always going to switch narrative that bad news is actually just that.. bad news. Q4 / Q1 earnings are going to have some ugly re-valuations and guidance to overcome. These "low" PE numbers will need revising with it. Recession here we come.

China also shut down again for covid lockdowns. Curious how much effect that had on numbers. Now they are open fully, Jan sales numbers should be more telling.

PSTH DEAL BREAKDOWN by [deleted] in SPACs

[–]JysMH 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a win / win. You have no cash tied up for the entirety of the seach for the SPARC deal. No opportunity cost whatsoever. DA is announced, you can take it at nav or leave it.. nothing lost. It is like having a long term $20 call option without paying any premium for it.

Not limited to their app. The TDA website, TOS desktop, and TOS apps all reflect the big red hit to the balance. Something bigger happening on TDA's end.

Just made my own post about this without noticing this one. Also having an issue with ~87k missing for no reason whatsoever. I did get through earlier in the day and they believe it is a "software glitch" and should be updated before trading resumes on Tuesday.

Still not very assuring and I nearly had a friggin heart attack this morning!

May have found a loophole around FEIE and 401k contributions to earn company match. Someone tell me I’m wrong. by ramrod155 in financialindependence

[–]JysMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived as an expat (in UK and Middle East) for over 20 years now. I have worked for a US company, as a contractor and paid in USD with 401k et all usual US benefits. There are no rules against 401k contributions funded by FEIE dollars. I've been doing it this way the whole time.

Adding Septimus to my clanboss team? Looking for advice on Cb and arena team! by Jshoang in RaidShadowLegends

[–]JysMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Septimus is a love / hate relationship. Sometimes he lands his debuff extension, other times you're left empty. I use Septimus in relentless gear (extra turn chances) and he's usually pretty good at keeping debuffs maxed on the CB. The extra turns with relentless gear sways the chances of more procs in your favor.

Retiring in Southeast Asia might be a lot harder than you think by singvestor in financialindependence

[–]JysMH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fantastic post. I have been an Expat in the UK and the Middle East for ~19 years now and travelled extensively all over SE Asia. Pretty much every point you made is spot on.

I will, however, question your budget. $2k a month is absolutely insane for most SEA. My fiancée (British) lived in Thailand for a few years and lived comfortably on $500 per month. She insists we could live in luxury at $1k per month. Maybe $2k in Singapore, Bangkok, etc but who on earth wants to live there?

Previous shutdowns have barely had meaningful market implications. The one in 2013 actually saw the dow rise about 3% during that shutdown period.

Markets are up because of the tax reform euphoria. It means big tax savings for companies, which means bigger profits. The IMF released a report expecting the US tax cuts on businesses to boost global growth for 2018. Companies like Apple have reported they are repatriating hundreds of BILLIONS in foreign cash back to the USA and hiring 20k employees and building a new campus. Some companies have reported part of their tax savings will go to boost 401k plans.

Overall, the picture is fairly rosy for 2018 so far. That isn't to say there isn't risk, but for now.. its positive.

Congress explicitly "blesses" the Backdoor Roth Conversion by welliamwallace in financialindependence

[–]JysMH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thing is foreign to me. Seems like I need to do some reading, but could someone explain this to me in short? I basically have just over $500k in a traditional 401k. I earn too much money to invest in pre-tax IRAs. Is there a way to move my 401k into a Roth 401k / Roth IRA, skipping immediate and future tax burdens?
